Friday, March 21, 1941 The Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon Society Cl ubs and Music Official Visits Made to Units Mrs. Ward Wolfe, president of district No. 4, Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, has been making her official visits to the auxiliaries in the district the past week. Fri day evening Mrs. Wolfe attended the Sclo auxiliary. Other mem bers going from Salem were Mrs. Eva Rush and Mrs. Effie Wetsel. Tuesday evening Mrs. Wolfe visit ed Dallas auxiliary. Others from Salem were Mrs. Eva Rush, Mrs. Russell Mudd and Mrs. Effie Wet sel. Wednesday evening the official visit was made to Silverton aux iliary. At Silverton a program was enjoyed. Attending the 8ilverton auxiliary were Mrs. Ward Wolfe, Mre. Russell Mudd, Mrs. Henry Sim, Mrs. David Furlough, Mrs. W. J. Wlckert, Mrs. Virgil Bolton, Mrs. James Moorman, Mrs. Ed Jandrell, Mrs. Barbara Cameron, Mrs. Morris Cady, Mrs. William Clare, Mrs. Bert Tompkins, Mrs. Eva Rush, Mrs. Effie Wetsel, Mrs. Arwln Strayer and Mrs, Axel Ja cobson. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hauk will entertain at dinner this evening in their apartment at the Royal Court honoring members of the Salem high school basketball team. Zonta Club Makes Plans for Conference Mrs. Margaret Rosecrans and Miss Lillian McDonald entertained the Salem Zonta club at the for mer's home Thursday at the month ly treasury evening dessert supper. An Interesting guest was Miss Dulcina Brown of Portland, presi dent of the Portland Zonta club and chairman of district six, who assisted the Salem club in making plans for the spring conference ot district six, which Is calendared for April 19 and 20 at the Hotel Marion. Present were Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Nova Young, Mrs. Leila Black, Mrs. Phil Brownell, Mrs. Rollin K. Page, Miss Helen Barrett, Miss Nellie Schwab, Miss Helen Bocker, Miss Helen Yockey, Miss Mabel Savage. Miss Doris Riches, Miss Genevieve Morgan and the hostesses, Mrs. Rosecrans and Miss McDonald. Church Circle Meets Friday The Ann Judson Missionary so ciety of the First Baptist church will meet Friday evening at 7:30 o'clock, at the home of Mrs. Irving A. Fox, 549 North Liberty street. There will be election of officers and opening of spring gift boxes. Mrs. F. A. Starkey will lead de votions. Mrs. Thomas MacDonald, of New York, will be the guest speaker. Mrs. Jack Gibson, Mrs. Albert Ramseyer and Mrs. P. D. Van Ail dell are the assisting hostesses. Bon Heur club will meet at the Fraternal temple Saturday evening at 9 o'clock for a gala dancing party. The Savage orchestra will play and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Se- lander and Mr. and Mrs, George Rhoten will act as the host group. Mrs. C. Hoogerhyde was enter tained Friday by friends and neigh bors who gathered to extend best wishes on her birthday. Many lovely gifts were received by the guest of honor. Cover. . . Music Teachers Plan Activities The Salem district of the1 Ore gon Music Teachers' association met Wednesday for a luncheon and bus iness session at the Argo hotel. Mrs. Mabel S. Powers presided. Plans were outlined for Music Week and for the Joy Turner Moses contest. Elma Weller, Jessie Bush Mickelson and Grace DeHarpport were appointed on the committee for nomination of officers. Those present were Mrs. P. P. Ceremony Held Last Monday Silverton Of interest locally to her many friends is the announce ment of the marriage of theli daughter, Sara Lee, by Mr. and Mrs. Lee Morrison, to Manley Sil ver of Portland, in a quiet cere mony at Vancouver, Monday fore noon. Accompanying the couple were the brother and sister of the bride, Bob and Ruth Morrison of Silver ton. Following a few days visit -with relatives here, Mr. and Mrs. Silver, will make their home in Portland where he Is employed. Gilkey, In South Liberty street. Detroit Club Hears Reports Detroit The Detroit Ladles club held lte regular meeting Wed nesday night at the high school with a large attendance. At the business meeting presided over by the president, Mrs. Joe Kessler, the club constitution was amended to change the tenure of dfflce of the president from four months to one year, election to be the first meeting In May; also to change the name of the club from Happy Hour to Detroit Ladles club. A report on the play given early in March showed $60.55 clear. It was voted to send (5 to the Chil dren's Farm Home. It was also voted to buy material and start work for a bazaar in the fall. At the program hour Mrs. Mabel Bearden reviewed "Wild Oeese Calling, ' by William Edward White, and Mrs. A. J. Committee Makes Plans The Public Affairs and Education committee of the Y.W.C.A. met at the State street headquarters Thursday morning. Mrs. N. J. Lind gren spoke on the broadening scope of the European Y.W.C.A. emerg ency committee and the fact that $100,000 has been assigned to the United States to raise. Half of the sum has been raised at this point. Plans were formed to cooperate with the social and membership committees to invite members and guests to a national radio broadcast of a luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York April 2, honoring Viscountess Halifax, who will be one of the speakers on the program. Mrs, E. B. Daugherty and Mrs. Roy Mills were appointed to repre sent tne puDiic an airs ana eaa cation committee. Radios will be placed In three rooms at the Y.W C.A. and coffee will be served. The committee also approved a new food class, to start the first week in April, for the benefit of employed women living in apart ments. The class, which will be giv en by Mrs. Arthur Madsen of the state vocational educational depart ment, will deal with quick recipes and ideas on nutrition. Mrs. Claud Morrison Hostess Wednesday Mrs. Claud Morrison opened her new home in Terrace Drive in West Salem to her card club Wednesday. Luncheon was served and the re mainder of the afternoon was spent at cards. The table centerpieces were bouquets of yellow and white flowers with yellow candles. Present were Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. Fanny Hunt, Mrs. John Darnielle, Mrs. Lee Rlckman, Mrs. Harry Johnson, Mrs. Ellis Batson, Mrs. Harry Pierson and Mrs. Fanny Bard. Mr. and Mrs. Allen Gilkey of Al bany have been visiting several days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Gilkey before leaving for southern California Thursday, where they plan to reside. . Legion Auxiliary Sponsors Dinner West Salem The Klngwood American Legion Auxiliary gave a dinner on Thursday evening at the Legion Hall, with Klngwood post and their families as their guests. The affair was arranged in celebra tion of the birthday of the organiza tion of the post. The Legion color scheme was car ried out In the table appointments and in attractive floral arrange ments about the banquet room. Lit tle Joan Orchard sang during the dinner hour. Following the dinner the auxiliary held Its business meeting, at which plans were made for Initiation of new auxiliary members on April 3 at the Legion Hall and plans for the sponsoring of a benefit card party at the Legion hall on April 6. Announcement was made of the participation of Troop 15, under sponsorship of Klngwood post, In the Boy Scout demonstration for the Cascade Area, to be held at the Sa lem armory, all day and evening, on Aoril 4. Abbott, Salem Rotana To be Organized Business and Professional women of Salem interested In organizing a Salem chapter of National Ro tana will meet Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock at the Marion hotel. Miss Bessie K. Taylor of the Port land chapter of Rotana will be here to conduct the meeting and tell of the work and purpose of the organization. Miss Taylor extends a special Invitation to women who were in a profession or business be fore their marriage and would like to keep up their contacts, to attend this meeting and become a part of the Salem chapter. Rotana In other cities has given camp sites' to Camp Fire Girls and Girl Scouts, endowed hospital beds, given scholarships, and maintained milk funds. It has provided an op portunity for the Interchange of Ideas and business methods as a means of Increasing the efficiency and usefulness of the members of the Rotana club. Lions Auxiliary At Fuhrer Home The Lions auxiliary met for lun cheon Thursday afternoon at God frey's. Later in the afternoon the group went to the home of Mrs. Jacob Fuhrer In North Church street. Assisting hostesses were Mrs LeRoy Stewart, Mrs. L. M. Ram age and Mrs. C. A. Vlbbert. Special guests were wives of Lions members from the Hollywood club, including Mrs. Richard A. Meyers. Mrs. Don Patton, Mrs. Harold Gil lespie and Mrs. J. Vinton Scott. Mrs. Louis Ramus was an addi tional guest. Mrs. C. F. Putnam announced plans for the third skating party to be held March 27. Junior Club at Library Wednesday Woodburn The social meeting of the Junior Woman's club was held Wednesday evening at the library olub rooms with Freda Burt and Zoa Lowthlan as hostesses. Mildred Day, club president, an- nounced a meeting of the executive board to be held March 31 at 8 p.m. at the Woodburn hotel. She also an nounced that costumes for the pag eant at the coming convention were to be' made by those taking part, instructions to be furnished. A letter was. read from Vera Jean Mohr thanking the executive board for the past president's pin which was presented to her recently. After a period of amusing games refreshments were served by the hostesses. The St. Patrick's motif was used for the decorations and menu. Mrs. Charles Snodgrass was a guest. The next meeting will be held April 2 with Lucille Ayers as pro gram chairman and Evelyn Jones, hostess chairman, assisted by Agnes Maricle. Altruistic Club Feted Recently Dallas The Altruistic club met Wednesday evening at the L. L. McCarty home with Georgia Mc- Clanathan and Mrs. Joe Dodge as hostesses for the meeting. Prizes for '600' were won by Mrs. Mary Starr, Mrs. Hubert M. Dunn and Mrs. L. L. McCarty. Room decorations car ried out the Easter motif. Chinese Artist Charms Audience A splendid performance was giv en by Soo Yong, Chinese actress and monologulst, at Salem high high school auditorium last night under the sponsorship of the Cres cendo club. The talented actress, with simple gestures, can miracu lously change her character at- will with the assistance of striking cos. tumes. In her sketch of "Out from the Inner Apartments," she depicted the Chinese woman before and after the revolution. She assumed the roles of a young girl, the old servant, great grandmother and the valiant modern Chinese moth er. She did fascinating Impersona tions of typical Americans, a scene from a Chinese opera and a comedy act showing a Chinese and a Jap. anese statesman at a banquet. In "The Rainbow Pass," Soo Yong played the parts of the hero ine, the warrior, the villain and the commentator. The Crescendo club is to be complimented on its list of stellar attractions, which it has brought to Salem during the season. Last night's performance is the last to be presented by the club this year. ... Kingwood Gardeners Bidden to Luncheon West Salem The Klngwood Garden club were guests at a des sert luncheon Thursday given by Mrs. A. F. Goffrier at her home in Senate street. Mrs. A. Stewart of the Salem Heights Garden club gave an in- teresting talk on "Layering and Plant Culture." The club accepted an Invitation to be guests of the Woman's club at Its next meeting. Albany Garden Club Has Show Albany The annual spring flower show of the Albany Garden club will open to the public at the city hall Friday afternoon of this week and continue through Satur day evening. Monitor The Monitor Woman's club recently met at the home of Mrs. Rodney McKee. Following luncheon the group sewed. Twenty were present.
