Eight The Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon Tuesday) January 21, 1941 Henry v:uy ,- . II -v jr roo r : i 21 NEW YEAR'S LOVE Angela Lorden Chapter 30 Visit to CUlborna Shortly afterwards they were alt ting together In small tearoom a Tew doora from the shop. Elsie vas to imbued with her own thoughts uhe forgot to ask Noel about her self. After they'd ordered, she con fided to Noel: "I'm to be married next month. He's not making much money but he's so brilliant.' "Who Is he?" Noel wanted to know. "Tommy Sheldon," Elsie explained with a glow In her eyes, which Noel envied. "Tommy? How wonderful." Noel was seeing Tommy as someone quite different from Elsie, the stoic. Tommy with his weaknesses Elsie with her strength. "I think It's grand," she told El- ale. After ahe left her, Noel was lone ly. Elsie had Tommy; Anita had Douglas. Everybody In the world, except her, belonged to someone. She was so alone now. Because Noel had promised Pel- eel's secretary, she called the cn terlon offices In New York. Told them where she was staying and thought how silly, as If anything would ever come out of that stupid screen test. After a dull evening alone In tha suite eating her salad for dinner, wondering what to do with her time, Noel awoke to a hot summer morning. She wished she were back In Oatona. At least It was cool there and peaceful. The morning papers carried no advertisement for "Susan Is Walt' log." That was strange! On lnv pulse, Noel took a cab down to the Dryden Theater. The house had a deserted look, as of hopefully waiting for a new tenant. The sign for "Susan Is Waiting" was etii: there, a bleak dusty outline in the unllghted bulbs. Old Joe would be at the stage door. A strange man lolling In the alley looked at her suspiciously as she approached. "Are any of the 'Susan Is Walt. lng' company Inside?" Noel asked politely. "It closed last week," came the Indifferent reply. Suddenly Noel knew she had to see Douglas Swanstrom. He would be able to help her. She would tell him about seeing Anita In Holiy wood about the screen test she'd taken at Criterion Studios. On the way over Noel met Ger ald Foster, "Hello, Noell" Gerald was ob viously delighted at the meeting "What about the play?" Noel had to know quickly. "Just one of those things." Ger ald had the actor's pretense of phil osophical acceptance. "One week the business was swell. Suddenly It Just petered out and there we were back on the pavements again. I suppose we should be grateful for having it last as long as It did.' At the Swanstrom offices, Doug las' secretary greeted Noel cordially, not hiding her surprise at the un expected visit. "Is Mr. Swanstrom in?" Noel ask ed casually. Douglas spent most of his days and nights In the office, she knew. "He left for Hollywood on this morning's plane," was the dismay ing news. "Mr. Felgel wants you to call him on the coast immediately." The message came to Noel next ay from the New York offices. Felgel's probably furious at me. Noel thought as she followed the New York office's suggestion and put in the call for Hollywood. And he was, as soon as he spoke with her. "Why didn't you stay here, like 1 told you to?" he asked Impatient ly. "I thought you'd forgotten about me," Noel explained half-hearted ly. She didn't say, "I couldn't stand It the waiting In Hollywood when everything was so uncertain " "Come out at oncel" Felgel's voice was arrogant. "Take the next plane here. We'll sign the contract: when you arrive," By Cam. C ANDERSON "The test was satisfactory then?" Noel s hopes rose. "Well, so-so," came the non committal comment. "But we'll be able to do things with you." Then he added casually, "We've bought the screen rights to 'Susan Is Wait ing." Maybe we can fix it so you'll play the part you did on the stage." "I'd like that," Noel told him, trying not to make her voice sound too elated. She was excited play ing Susan would be perfect for her. "The boys In New York will get busy right away," Felgel went Into plans Immediately. "Do what they tell you they know their business." "Their business," as Noel discov ered almost at once, was keeping her occupied for the next ten hours. Bill Smith of the publicity depart ment was at her hotel an hour after her telephone conversation with Felgel. He took her to a photographer, had dozens of poses made the proofs were to be rush ed through Immediately. There was a meeting with CRstern executives at the Ambassador. That didn't seem very businesslike to her. Douglas would have had her name on the dotted line first. "What about your romance with David Norrls?" one of the Inter viewers asked Noel. Noel's face showed her resent ment. Bill Smith Interrupted quickly, "That was all imaginary, wasn't It, Miss Marchand?" He smiled knowingly at the reporter. Felgel evidently changed his mind frequently. From "taking the first plane," Noel found herself busy for several days, at the whims and schemes of the New York office. "We're leaving tomorrow," Bill Smith said casually one morning as though he were telling Noel, "You 're having luncheon with an Inter' viewer."
