Kiwanis After Fifth Columns Spokane, Wash., Aug. 31 (U.PJ Closing sessions of the 23rd annual Paclflo Northwest Kiwanis conven tion today were on record asking elimination of "fifth column" groups as political organizations. The 1300 delegates and their wives returned home after three days of recreation and business. Copies of the resolution, which would also prevent the appearance of "fifth-column" names on election ballots, will be mailed to the gover nors of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and every congressman from the Pacific northwest and the premier of British Columbia. Speaking at the governor's ban auet last night. Dr. Adam S. Ben- nlon of Salt Lake City told Ki- wanians they were needed to give answers to problems of ' conscrip tion, public debt, and function and type of government." "Remember that we can't have totalitarianism and regimentation along with liberty," he said. Petite Flier Tries for Record Harrisburg, Pa., Aug. 21 W Betsy Boss, petite and 30, who wants to establish the first altitude record for light planes at 20,000 feet, waited today for the official result of her finst attempt and declared "If It isn't over 20,000, I'll try gain." The 99-pound aviatrlx, who has been flying only since June, 1939, circled her two-place cabin plane for three hours and eight minutes over the Harrisburg airport yester day. It was the first time light planes officially have been recognized In altitude flight by the National Aeronautics association, said Buss Brtnkley, NAA contest chairman. 8o. added Miss Boss, "almost any height I might go would be aTecord, not broken, but established." Brinklev estimated Miss Ross climbed to 20,000 feet or "within 600 feet of that anyway." The flier, however, said her alti meter showed 18,204 feet at the ton of her climb "I tried to go higher, but the plane Just woudn't go any higher" but she thought the Instrument may have been affected by the cold. A sealed barograph in the plane has been sent to Wash ington to be checked by the NAA for the official height. Miss Ross, secretary to her fa ther, a Richland, Fa., businessman, when she Is not flying, said she dis carded her oxygen mask at 17,000 feet because it "bothered me. Nearly 3,000,000 tons of peat are to be taken from bogs in Denmark and used in place of coal during the winter The word "residence" is correct when the word Is used In engraving. In speaking, It sounds pretentious, and therefore is not good form This Is In answer to the reader who p ' all er In summer time even more often than In cold weather, the business woman housekeeper will choose Ice cream for dessert. It is so easy to stop on the way home and choose ice cream of one or more flavors, and then to put In Into the freezing tray of the refrigerator so that it will keep until after the quick meal has been prepared and served. The family never tires of ice cream or ice but a good sauce with the for mer will be thoroughly appreciated. Peaches crushed with sugar will naturally be featured. Any type of berry sweetened and perhaps fla vored with a little sherry or bran dy, makes an easy sauce. Then there are favorite chocolate and butterscotch sauces which can be made ahead of time, if you like, stored in the refrigerator and re heated when the occasion demands Sometimes toasted nuts are used with these sauces. Hot maple sy rup is also good with Ice cream, and a few salted almonds or pecans will add a final touch. Any preserved fruit may serve as a sauce and chopped dried fruits will furnish a basis for a simple sauce when they are cooked with sugar and water. Apricots may be put through a coarse sieve to fur nish a puree which Is delicious serv ed either hot or cold. Try adding a dash of almond flavoring to this. A combination of chopped dates cooked with sugar and water and combined with nuts is better cold than hot. You have given your dis approval of the word 'residence which is another reason whv I ask : ' you about this." 1 To answer further, the name of the relative's house follows at the end of the regular Invitation be -ginning; Mr. and Mrs. John White request the honor of your presence . and continuing to: St. Mary's Church and afterwards at the reception at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Ely Black Chestnut Hill Boys for Her Guests Dear Mrs. Post: Mother doesn't quite approve of my Inviting a girl friend and two boys, who are near neighbors of my grandmother whom I visit every summer, to stay at our house over a week-end. We have plenty of room and mother's dis approval Is not for that reason. She just has a feeling, she says, that young girl should not invite young boys to stay at her house. It -you say it Is done and approved. then should mother write to the mothers of the young people? I can hardly Imagine the boys liking this! If we go out to a restaurant to dine and dance while they are staying with me, how can I handle the money question so as not to' embarrass the boys? I'd want to pay because they are my invited guests. Answer: It Is entirely proper to invite your friends to stay at your parent's house, but it Is not neces sary that your mother write a let ter to the boys. She might, how ever, add a separate sheet of note' paper to your own letter of invita tion to Mary on which she might add that she hopes she will be able to come. This is really done more for the benefit of Mary's mother rather than for Mary. Hand one of the boys the money before you go, and say, "Father gave me this for our expenses, so will you please be the banker?"
