Two candidates for the office of sheriff made their intentions offi cial Tuesday when Mike Southard democrat, filed his petition, as did E. C. McClaln, republican. Southard, a former deputy under Herbert Shelton, will attempt to de feat his former employer for the nomination and also Jess Mosf, who recently filed his petition. E. C. McClain so far Is the only republican aspirant for the office of sheriff, but other candidates have expressed their intention to file on tli at ticket, It was announced. County Treasurer Grover C. Nance has filed his candidacy for nomina tion on the democratic ticket look ing toward re-election. Orators Will Compete Albany Linn county will be rep resented at a division constitution oratorical contest Saturday, March 23, under auspices of the Oregon department of the American Legion, by Richard Owen, Lebanon high school student, who won the county contest at the Veterans' Memorial hall Monday. Owen was one of three contestants, of whom the oth er two, Elols Coates, Albany, and Burton Blackwell, Lebanon, were adjudged tied for second place. The winning oration dealt with the sub' Ject, "The Constitution and Unity.' In addition to giving a prepared oration, each contestant gave a brief extemporaneous talk, also upon some phase of the constitution, each subject being designated by lot at the time of the contest. The win ner of the division contest, to be held at Salem, will vie In state finals at Portland, March 30. Judges of the contest were Rev. Oeorge P. Davis, Clyde Williamson, Ianthe Smith, Jack Pearce and Mrs Ben Oerig. Objections Are Heard Albany Probate Judge J. J. Bar rett has Issued an order transfer ring to circuit court the hearing over objections of George E. Boyes, administratrix of the estate of Claus Thiessen. Meanwhile, the de fendant In these proceedings has asked 10 days In which to file a supplementary and amended find account. Boyes la objecting to al lowances of certain claims of the Claus Thiessen estate and is con tending that the Anna Thiessen es tate should have Included half the Claus Thiessen personal property. The ladies aid and community club served dinner to a group of men who were remodeling the In terior of the club room and build ing a wood shed for the church, Tuesday. A group from the Lyons Meth odist Sunday school visited the boys' pavilion "C" at the. tubercu losis hospital in Salem Sunday af ternoon. They put on a program for the boys of music, song and readings. Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. Paul Johnston were Rus- sel Niblock of Lyle, Wash., a student of Oregon State college, and Miss Pearl Sovern of Portland, also i student at Oregon College of Edu cation. Seven scouts ceived second class merit badges, namely: Virgil Thomas, handicraft: Desmond Puson, carpentry; George Meyers, cycling; Malcolm Long, pathfinding; all above of Troop 50, Stayton. During "good of the order" the worthy patron, E. S. McRobert, called for suggestions for entertainment following the meet ings, several of the officers and members responding, It was decided that at the next meeting, on April 8, three neigh boring chapters will be Invited to join in with the local chapter. Sev eral new candidates will be initiated at that time. The committees ap pointed to serve included: refresh' ments, Vivian Hoenig, Marian Al len, Louise Grafe, Else Allen, and Mary Higdon; decoration, Mabel Needham and Alice McRobert; and reception, Mildred Allen and Elsie Potter. Mr. and Mrs. Scott Wolf have returned home for a few days from Gcrvals where they are at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R. Miss Laura May Kruse, in nurse's training school at St. Peter's hos pital at Olympla, Wash., returned home, after a visit at the home of her mother and other relatives. Turner High School Teachers Replaced Turner The Turner school board recently announced there Is to be a complete change In teachers In the high school, although all the grade school teachers have been re tained. Two of the high school teachers, Mrs. Edna Allen and Miss Ger trude Reonike, have taught In Tur ner high four years, while Virgil Scott, principal, and Orve Nikula have taught in Turner for only two years.
