Men's Accessories
loionui lor spring
Stripes, plaids and checks are key
notes for accessories In the man's
wardrobe for the spring and fall
of 1940.
For the first time In a number of
years, most of the designs to be seen
in ties, shirts, socks and other ac
cessories embody the Ideas of Am
erican designers. They have been
made to suit American men and the
colors, patterns and fabrics should
please young and old in all parts of
this country.
Wool Ties for Summer
In the necktie field for 1940 there
are two new notes. One is the return
of the narrow crocheted or knit tie
which can be purchased in either
wool or wool and silk mixtures.
These come in solid colors and In
stripes, and promise to be a favor
ite everywhere.
The second new note is the In
creasing popularity of the wool four-in-hand.
While many of these in
the past have been Imported from
Ireland and Scotland, they are now
being made in quantity by some of
the largest mills in America. Their
colors are soft and mellow, running
to grays, blues, shades of brown and
deeper shades of red.
Many of these wool ties come in
'plaids. Some are In soft heather
mixtures and others in paisley and
other small designs. They do not
wrinkle in packing and the fact that
they do not absorb perspiration is
greatly in their favor.

their fathers at the end of the last
century. A Paris night club announ

For the past few seasons, the style element in home fur
nishings has translated the words "fashion," "personality,"
and "glamour" into the domestic scene, giving a boost to local
business in practically every American community. The
movies are partially responsible for this, but in the main

In the retailing ol spring, 1840,
horns furnishings is that every sale,
regardless of the amount Involved,
Is made with due consideration for
the Individual home concerned, as
well as Its Inhabitants. Home furn
ishings are no longer a routine
matter, but are surrounded by as
much color and interest within the
stores as possible, in order to inspire
the consumer with an Idea of the
effectiveness they will have In her
own home. This Is where the words
"glamour" and "drama" come into
the picture,
MBiiy stores supply lree decorat
ing advice, or tie in with the edi
torial features of widely read na
tional magazines. Thus, the vogue
In home furnishings becomes as
universally Interesting to American
consumers as docs that of ready to
wear fashions. "Express yourself in
your home" is the theme of this
new brand of retailing, and in con
nection with tills there are home
furnishings fashion shows, exhibits
and forums, all stimulating com
munity as well as Individual inter
est. Now, more than ever before, Hie
American home expresses the In
dividuality of Its owners, and there
Is a freer, more facile use of furni
ture and accessories than ever be
fore. Woods may be matching or
contrasting . . . curtains may be
fluffy or tailored . . . rugs may be
plain or figured, scattered or car
pets. Many homes which might
have been considered "old fashion
ed" a few years ago now emerge as
charming and harmonious, by the
staple addition of a single piece or
a few fresh accessories.
Slip covers and upholstery are
equally popular lor year round
treatments of chairs and sofas.
There Is a tendency to use wore of
the homespun types of fabrics, lor
both formal and Informal types of
rooms. Victorian and Edwardian
colors are having a vogue right now
tor rooms of American or Enzllsh
periods or moods. Chin tees and
