Tuesday, December 19, 1939 The Capital Journal, Salens Oregon TWenty-On Baron Mamierheim 'He Beat Reds Once, Trying It Again It is almost two decades since the name of Baron Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Kmil Mannerheim made headlines but with Finland and Russia once more at odds, he is once more news. The World war was three years old when Finland proclaimed her indeiwndence in December, 1917. Almost immediately, the well-organized Social-Democrats of Fin land moved to set up a Soviet regi me like the one In Russia to the south. Their Red Guard captured many important cities,' including Helsinki, the capital. At this, juncture. Baron Manner heim became the leader of a counter-revolution. Scion of one of the important noble Finnish iamilies, Mnnnerheim had served 30 years in the Imperial Russian army. His World war service as a cavalry gen eral included periods on the Polish, Galician. Bukovinian and Bessara hlan fronts. At the outbreak of the Russian revolution, in 1917, he re turned to Finland. In January, 1918. the Finnish Diet, with the So cialist deputies excluded, authorized the organization of a White force to fight the red guards. Manner heim was appointed commander-in-chief. Germany gave Mannerheim im portant aid in the form of muni tions and an expeditionary force of 12,000 men under General Ru dlgrr von der Glotz. In four months of serious fighting, Man nerheim and von der Glotz broke the resistance of the Red Guard and entered Helsinki in triumph Finnish sources say 2,000 people of Red leanings were executed before White supremacy was established. The Britannica says 15,000. The Germans then foisted a Ger man prince on Finland as king. The Diet elected him to office but he never took over and finally in December, 1918, Mannerheim toe came regent. He organized a force of 100,000 into a "Skyddkorps" to maintain in ternal order and In March, 1919, permitted elections for a new par liament. At the some time he of fered to join the British interven tionists against the Russian Bolshe viks In return for the city of Petro grad (now Leningrad). His offer was refused. Nevertheless, a Finnish army attacked Petrograd, without success. Under the constitution Adopted In June, 1919, declaring Finland to be a republic, the Parliament chase Its first president and passed over Mannerheim. He retired to private life. Today he is back In harness as the aged head of the Finnish de fease council which directs Fin land's army of 300,000 men. Boys Set Up in Cattle Business Phoenix, Ariz. Rt Two hundred Maricopa county farm boys have been set up in the cattle business by a Phoenix packing company. With no initial investment by the youths, the packing company gave each a purebred Hereford calf on condition that the boys have their parents' consent to raise calves and that the calves, upon maturity, be sold back to the firm at the prevail ing market price. The original cost of the calf will then be deducted On each boy's ability as a feeder will determine whether or not his enterprise shows a profit. (I'j A young taxi cab driver and his still younger brother a bus depot porter have written a book. It's called "The Ridgewood Murders" and a publish er has accepted it. It took Martin Hume, 28, and his 22-year-old brother, Carr Lyle, three years to turn out the book, started when both were students at Wes tington Springs, S. D., Junior college. ' Martin, who drives the cab, works 10 hours a day and collaborates with Carr Lyle, who hns only a part-time Job. when both can get together. They've started another book. Twice as Good Roanoke, Va. Horsley resulted in Christ mas cards printed by Joseph Cundall of London in 1846. In lithography, and colored by hand, 1,000 cards were published. The work started in Au gust. Other persons think W. C. T. Dobson beat Sir Henry to the idea. By 1S60 the Christmas card began to be a major problem for delivery by December 29.
