The most Important and valuable collection of art yet
shown by the Art Center will bo on view Friday when original

It Is a rare opportunity to see the
actual work of familiar and great
namea In art history. It to in such
work as these etchings and litho
graphs that thee artists, free from
patrons' demands and restrictions,
gave truest expression to their crea
tive abilities.
Beginning with work by Pollatuo
lo. lath century Italian artist, the
exhibition continues with work by
such magic names as Albrecht Dur
er. Tan Leyden. Van Dyke, Claude
Lorraine. Rembrandt, Ruyadae
Tiepolo, Hogarth, Fragonard, Goya,
Turner. Daumler, Millet, to artists
of recent and modem times as Ma
net, Rodin, whlatler, Renoir. Forain,
Zom, Pennell, Crosso and Picasso.
One of the greatest collectors in
the world has made possible this ex
hibition for Salem. Lesslng J. Rosen
wald of Philadelphia has realized,
as few collectors do, the value of
making original art by great masters
available to be seen by everyone. He
consented to lend this exhibition for
a tour of all the art centers, and It
will be on view here for three weeks.
"Battle of the Nudes," an engrav
ing by Antonio Pollaluolo, one of the
most famous goldsmiths, sculptors
and painters of his time, Is typical
of his treatment of the nude, which
Vasart said was more modern than
that of any of the masters whlcl'
preceded him. He dissected many
bodies to examine their anatomy,
and was the first to represent the
proper action of the muscles.
Durer Work Shown
Albrecht Durer, the greatest fig
ure of lath century Germany, is rep
resented by an original woodcut,
"Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse,"
an engraving., "Adam and Eve," and
a portrait-engraving of Phillip Mel
ancthon, the colleague of Luther In
the Reformation. The Inscription
under the portrait says that Durer
could depict the features of the liv
ing Phillip, but the skilled hand
could not depict his mind. Lucas val
Leyden, of the Netherlands school,
working the same time aa Durer, Is
represented by an engraving, "David
Playing on the Harp Before Saul."
Many less known artists are rep
resented, including Aldergrever, Ral
mondl, and Campagnola as typical
of loth century work in Italy and
Germany. Work of Anthony Van
Dyck Is Included with an etching of
Judocua de Momper. It Is said that
Van Dyck perfected a method for
setting down the external features

dry-points and lithographs, and one

group of etchlnga and lithographs
by 20th century artists completes
the exhibition, with representative
work by Augusts Renoir. Jean Louis
Poraln, Anders L. Zorn and the

usual reproduction that we are ac
customed to seeing, let It be remind
ed that these etchings and litho
graphs are actually made by the art
ist themselves, and in most exam
ples only a very few exist In the
world today.

work. Tiepolo, of the 18th century
Italian school. Is Included with an
etching "Six Persona Before a Serpent."
Wllliair Hogarth's "Lord Lovat
Simon" and Valentine Green's
Oeorglena" are the first works by
English artists to be Included. Frag-
onard is represented with "Bacca-
haneles," one of a series of four
etchings, dated 1763. He was a pupil
of Chardln and a protege of Bouch
er. The subject of this print as well
as the series to which It belongs was
probably suggested by the "Caprices"
of Tiepolo.
Goya, of late 18th century Spain,
to conceded to be one of the greatest
artists that the world has seen during
of Jean Francois Millet, with his
paintings of "The Angelus" and
