Journal, Salem, Oregon Tuesday, February 21, 1939 Championship Basketball Slated for 8 O'clock Tonight Ten Sluts and Scratches B Fred Zimmerman Capital Journal S porta Editor Barold Hauk. coach of Salem highs basketball crew, came home from southern Oregon convinced that the Medford Tigers will be no "pushovers for anybody1' when they enter the state tournament March IS. The Tigers evidently were badly off form when they played here early In the year, Judging by the results of the Medford series when Hauks boys won the first and then dropped the second game. News dls patches gave the Idea that the two games In Medford were extremely rough, but Hauk denies this, saying the contests were hard played af fairs with both sides concentrating upon winning. There were no off color tactics so far as he was able to determine. By the way the teams stack op now, Medford will go up ag ainst either Dallas, Tillamook, McMlnnvllle or Chemawa the first day of the tournament. The Tigers drew district No. 11, which originally was represent ed by the first team out of Port land. Since the metropolitan schools and the upstate variety split the blankets. District No. was given two entrants. District sis comprises Msrion, Polk, Til lamook, Washington and Yam hill counties, represented last year by Dallas and Woodbum. That Beaver uprising against the Webfoots at Corvallls Saturday night nas started deep furrows in Coach Howard Maple's brow. He reflects that Oregon won 10 straight before they stumbled over the Orangemen. His own Bearcats have stretched the victory string to 13 games and the 13th one Is tonight with Whitman cast In the role of a possible Jinx. Members of the Willamette squad, however, say the figure 13 has no extraordinary meaning for them They feel confident of winning both Whitman games and then finishing up tne season by performing a sim ilar trick against Pacific Friday and Saturday nights. They admit they looked none too good against the CPS loggers In Tacoma last week, but point to Insufficient lighting of the gym as extenuating circumstances. Whitman Club Real Threat To Bearcats While they msy not be In the class of Big BUI Anton when It comes to height, those Whitman Missionaries who tangle with Willamette's Bear cats In two championship basketball games tonight and Wednesday eve ning, cannot be considered midgets In any sense of the word. However, regardless of the altitude of Coach Nig Borleske's cagers, they are a swift moving outfit and Invade Si' lem with the idea of running the legs off the 'Cats during the series which may determine the Northwest conference championship. Coach Howard Maple's tone de fense may bother the Missionaries to some extent but with such long range artists as Bullock and the Pe pin brothers In the Whitman line up, the visitors will not be stymied to any extent. Bullock Is the leading scorer of the Missionaries although Webb has saved several games by his ability to hit the bull's eye In the clinch. Whitman's starting lineup will probably consist of Bullock and Pepin, forwards; Gentry, center; Heldenrelch and Webb, guards. Coach Howard Maple plans to use White, Eberly, Anton, Skopll and Quesseth, although Johnny Kolb. who has shown vast Improvement In recent games, may be substituted for one of the guards. The Bearcats have won 12 straight with Whitman coming up In the 13th spot, a fact which may mean something or It may not. The game each night will start at g o'clock. Woodbum Boxers Planning Benefit Woodbum The Lettermen's club of Woodbum high school Is srjon. soring a smoker In the high school gymnasium Friday evening, Febru ary 34, the proceeds to be used to ouy grass seed for the proposed turr athletic field. The field Is to Be constructed on land not now In use, located east of the grandstand The grandstand, which now faces west, will be turned to face east. A quarter mile track will extend around the new gridiron. The pres ent atnieuc neid will be used ex cluslvely for baseball. It Is estl mated that about 1100 will be need, ed to finance the project. Eighteen boxing bouts of three rounds each have been lined up for the program and there will also be two wrestling matches. The main event will be between Paul Halter and Bob Ronn. These . two put on the main event last year and Renn won by a knockout. Other boxing bouts will be: Thompson vs. Schlecht; Nathman vs. H. Nelson: J. C. Miller vs. Harr; Fryer vs. Rich; Marcott vs. Dick enson; Koch vs. C. Martin, Adamski vs. R. Martin: Willeford vs. Han uska; Klstener vs. Anderson; Gag ner vs. Kerts; Mel Sprouse vs. R. Howe; W. Racette vs. Donnelly; Coleman vs. Ourney; Tate vs. Ja cobs; Wilbur Breese vs. Zak; A. Nelson vs. 8eely; J. Ooodyard vs. Quesnel. Garfield Graders End Tennis Play Milton Meiro and Bill Sturdevant were the winners in novice table tennU tournaments for sixth grade ana lourtn and ruth grades. spectlvely, which ended Monday evening at Garfield grade school. Only a small crowd saw the game In which Washington never was the complete master. The first 15 min utes were a tight battle with the score tied three times. Barrett led Idaho's scoring Ith 10. Chemawa Indians Close WYI Season Chemawa The Chemawa hlch school Braves will close their WVI league season at Independence Tues day night. The game will not change the standing of the Indians, as they have cinched third place in the league, but will determine the final standing of Independence as they are tied with Woodbum for last place In the league with one win in thirteen starts. The game will afford the locals an opportunity to extend two league records which they have copped this season. Backbone, already 45 points up on the Individual scoring record, will have a chance to raise his total of 25 points. The former record was 206. The Braves have also bettered the team scoring record of 563 points, set by the Woodbum team last year. They have a total of 591 points to date In thirteen games. Coach Gastlneau will devote the rest of the regular playing season to preparing the locals for the dis trict tournament at Monmouth Some of the "B" team members will be moved up to the tournament squad. The "B" team is the new WVI league champion in their di vision and have lost only one game this season out of 18 played. Sheridan, Amity Settle Tie Sheridan Sheridan and Amity high school basketball teams will meet tonight on Llnfleld college floor to determine which club will enter the entertainment schedule for later In the week at Linfield. Sheridan and Amity are at present tied. Last week Sheridan defeated Amity 29 to 21 in a game featured by many fouls. A preliminary game of volleyball between the girls of the two schools ended with a victory for unuv. as to 16. Hobson Drills Webfoots for Friday Game Eugene, Ore., Feb. 21 W With their first place security seriously menaced, the Oregon Webfoots, de fending champions of the northern division basketball conference, at tempted to recapture their deftness In practice this week preparatory to resuming the important series with Oregon State here Friday night. The conference leaders, who lost to the Beavers In a one-sided contest at Corvallls Saturday, were but a game ahead of the second-place Washington Huskies. Howard Hob- son, Oregon coach, attributed his team's crushing defeat to a com bination of a Webfoot let-down and Oregon State brilliance. He reported Laddie Gale, ace for ward whose hopes of a scoring re cord were damaged when the Beav era held him to three points, and Wally Johansen, guard, would re celve a rest because of minor Injur ies suffered Saturday. Hobson also threatened drastic revision of his first-string lineup unless the combination settled down and showed definite Improvement In practice. The game with Oregon State will be the last regular home appearance for Oregon. The Webfoots conclude the season with two games against Washington at Seattle. It was Cun ningham's first loss In 20 races. He summed up Cunningham's loss ss a "foolish error when hs tried to pass me on a turn." "I expected him to set the pace," Borican said. Silverton Meets Dallas Dragons Silverton Silverton hlgn will play its last league basketball gams here Tuesday night when Dallas comes to town.
