Senator McKay went Into legislative activity after a bril
liant career tn Salem where he was mayor, president of the
chamber of commerce and of Salem Community Service. He found
time also to serve as post commander of the American Legion,
president of the Oregon State Auto Dealers and president of the
OSO (correct this time) alumni association. He was born tn
Portland, June 94, 1893, establishing an automobile agency here
tn 137, after selling Insurance and automobiles In that city for

ances totaling $415,236.09. according to the semi-annual re
port of Grover C. Nance, county treasurer, for the last half

Independence The Independence
Chamber of Commerce had as guest
Tuesday night for dinner, Mrs.
Hamsberger from the Oak Point
district. This was a special meet
ing of the chamber. Mrs. Hams
berger was presented by President
Fowler, and she made a brief talk
concerning the friendly feeling and
relations existing between the two
communities.
The matter of a change in wave
length of station KOAO was brought
to the attention of the members
and the resolutions committee was
Instructed to bring In a resolution
asking that the station be not
changed, and a copy of the same
will be sent to Senator McNary In
Washington, D. 0. "
W. A. Bamum acted as secretary
tn the absence of J. O. Mcintosh,
who was detained at home on ac
count of Illness In the family. Mr.
Fix was received as a new member.

Club Has Election
Monmouth Mrs. William Ridden
opened her home Wednesday after
noon to members of Sunbeam Thim
ble club, who motored to the Rld
dell country home, south of Mon
mouth. Election of officers was held. Mrs.
O. W. Price was named president;
Mrs. Oily Demlng, vice-president:
Mrs. W. L. Mason, secretary-treas-,
urer, and Mrs. E. Hamer, corres
ponding secretary. Following the In
stallation of the new officers by
Mrs. Hamar and the reading of re
ports, a social time was enjoyed,
concluding with refreshments.
For the next meeting the group
will go to the home of Mrs. Bhel
don Cody.

Hearing Tests
Given Students
Lebanon Only a small percent of
the Lebanon school pupils who were
given hearing tests Tuesday and
Wednesday of this week reacted un
satisfactorily, results received by
Superintendent Milton K. Cos re
veal. Of the 630 examined In all day
examinations Tuesday and In the
morning Wednesday, 31 were report
ed to have defective hearing of anv
serious nature, or four percent The
tests were conducted by Pauline
Keller and Dr. OJ.0. Thorn neon
of the state board of health.
Reports have not yet been learned
here of the results of the examin
ations given to students of several
rural schools In this neighborhood
Wednesday morning and afternoon.
Tests were to be resumed this
Friday morning for pupils of the
upper two high school classes and
later in the day for pupils of other
rural acnoola In this section.

the Immanuel Lutheran church
an all day affair with the women
of the Ladles' Aid serving noon
luncheon to the public. Rev. J. M.
Jenaon opened the session at 10
o'clock with devotionals and a ser-
monette. HI annual report show
ed a steady progress In all depart
ment throughout the year.
Elected as a member of the board
of trustee was Stanley Swan son
reading the treasurer's report and
also the report of the year's accom
plishments of the Ladles' Aid com
piled by Mrs. R. O. Solum, was
H. N. Kiev; Hannah Olson, super
intendent of the Sunday school,
made the report for her department.

that made a net gain of $150 for

Monmouth The Monmouth W.
C. T. 0. held It annual missionary
meeting Monday afternoon at the
Christian church. The missionary
societies of the various local church
es were guests and contributed to
the afternoon' program.
The business session was presided
over by Mrs. J. H. cady. Mr. James
Riddell appeared In a talk on mis
sionaries, stressing the work of two
workers tn the mission field. Mrs.
Artie Mack's talk dealt with prayer
and faith. Miss Dill sang two solos
accompanied by Miss Mary Walker
and Mrs. Eldon Riddell and Mrs.
J. L. Norrla gave a duet with Mr.
W. A. Elkln at the piano.
A silver tea and social tune con
cluded the meeting.

Sparks Gives Talk
At Chemawa Chapel
Chemawa Lestle J. Sparks, pro
fessor of physical education at Wil
lamette university, was the main
speaker at chapel. Sparks spoke on
physical fitness. As a basis for his
remark he used the statistics that
he gathered in last year's state
tournament. After his talk he
showed moving pictures of Wil
lamette university football games
and also one reel of the big east
ern football team.

Double Rites Slated
For Train Victims
Albany A double funeral service will be held for Mrs,
Kate M. Croft, 58, and Mrs. Jessie Beamer, 52, of Shedd, sis
ters, who were killed Wednesday evening, when their car was
struck oy an Oregon Electric work
train at a grade crossing three miles
west of Tangent, near the Cecil
Montgomery home, whence the two
women were returning home.
Mrs. Croft and Mrs. Beamer were
daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs.
S. P. Brock, pioneers of the Shedd
community. Mrs. Croft was bom
October , 1880. at Shedd, and was
married In 1901. Surviving Is a dau
ghter, Mrs. Edith Stewart, of Shedd.
Mrs. Beamer was born at Oakrldge
May 1, 1886, but had spent most of
her life In Shedd. She was married
to Roy Beamer October a, 1930. He
survive.
Both are survived also by two bro
thers and two sisters: Irvln Brock,
Salem, and R. E. Brock, Spokane,
and Mrs. Mary Arnold and Tempa
Brock, Shedd. Funeral service are
to be held In Shedd Saturday with
burial In the Pugh cemetery.

Safety Council
Given Reports
Dallas The traffio safety council
met In the chamber of commerce
room Wednesday night. Charles
Plessinger, V.F.W., reported that
two signs had been placed on Main
street at the elementary school
building and these signs were pro
vided by the V.F.W. post
The meeting decided to accept
the offer or the Lions' club to fur
nish "safety" book covers to every
student in the Junior high school.
The question of placing another stop
sign for the elementary school
building near the intersection of
Church and Ash will be reported on
the next regular meeting by Mrs.
Albert Bennett, chairman of the
publicity committee.
The chairman, W. Blackley. secre
tary of the council, who presided In
the absence of Donald Gabbert, re
quested reports from the accident
study and engineering committee
and one from the enforcement com
mittee. These report will be pre
sented at the February meeting.
The Bicycle Safety club, a phase
of the local Safety movement spon
sored by the V. F. W., was report
ed to be functioning In excellent

Mrs. Emma Otjen, who has
been employed a operator In
the Woodburn office for ten
years, ha been promoted to
manager. Mrs. Hattie Lytle
will be day operator and Miss
Nona Otjen will take the
night shift. An additional op
erator will be put on soon.

During Year
SUverton The Trinity Lutheran
congregation held it annual busi
ness meeting Wednesday evening tn
the social rooms with Rev. M. J. K.
Fuhr delivering a brief sermon and
leading In opening devotional. The
pastor's yearly summary report re
vealed the addition of 76 members
during the year by baptism and ap
plication.
The apportionment to the genera
budget requirement were entirely
met The report on the accrument
of the church organ fund was re
ferred back to the organ commit
tee. The church auditorium and
social and Sunday school room will
be completely redecorated and re
painted. The salary of the minister was
raised. Bach department of the
church made report.
Offcers placed for the ensuing
church year, many reelected, were:
