Belle N. Brown, worthy matron,

O.E.S., presided at the last meeting
for 1938 In the Masonic temple last
evening. The 1939 officers will be
Installed Thursday evening, Decem
ber 39, at I o'clock. The Installation
Is restricted to Eastern Star mem
bers and invited guests.
Florence Herscher and S. Raynor
Smith, retiring presiding officers of
4 Roseburg chapter, were special
guests.
The final meeting of 1938 was the
Christmas party and gift exchange.
Dr. w. C. Kantner read an appro
priate Christmas message and the
membership sang carols.
A Christmas tree, procured and
set up by Wayne Henry and William
Merrlott, entirely filled the stage.
It was decorated by a committee
from the O.E.S. Afternoon club. The
gift exchange was In charge of Ira
L. Darby, Miss Leila Johnson and
Dr. Oussle Miles.
The dining room was decorated
with holly and red candles, and re
freshments were served by a com
mittee oo-chairmaned by Mr. and
Mrs. Paul Hauser.
Mrs. Harry E. Crawford and J.
S. Murray will be presiding officers
of Chadwlck chapter during 1939.

Women of Rotary met for lunch

was the Christmas party for the
group and a Christmas tree and

Festivities Planned
At Girls' School
Girls at State Industrial School
for Girls are making extensive plans
for the holidays.
Friday afternoon they will pre
sent a program of Christmas music
at the Old People's home.
Christmas eve the girls will have
their Christmas tree in the sitting
room at the school. A pantomime
of the nativity, carols, readings and
music will feature the program.
Sunday a complete Christmas tur
key dinner has been planned for the
girls and religious services will be
held at 3 o'clock. The Madrona
Glee club will sing.
Mothers' club of Scout troop No.
1 will hold a Christmas party at
the Rotary cabin Thursday eve
ning. Falls City Mrs. Laura Estey Is
spending the week in Salem with
her daughter, Mrs. Homer Schu
bert.

Has Christmas
"Party Tuesday
The Etokta club met for luncheon
at Godfrey's Tuesday and later mo
tored to the home of Mrs. H. G.
Carl, where the afternoon was
spent informally.

Visit Daughter
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Simmons and
their daughter, Miss Mary Jane, are
leaving Friday for Palo Alto, where
they will spend Christmas with Miss
Betty Simmons, who has been ser
iously ill at the Memorial hospital
the past few weeks.
Miss Simmons will leave the hos
pital shortly after the first of the
year and return to Salem to recup
erate at the country place of her
parents.

for a group of Salem and Portland

Veterans Receive
Christmas Gift
Every disabled World war veteran
who spends Christmas in a hospital
will receive a Christmas gift from
the American Legion auxiliary, ac
cording to Mrs. Harry Wechter, re
habilitation chairman of Capital unit
of the auxiliary. Last Christmas,
gifts went to 83,470 hospitalized vet
erans and approximately the same
number are expected to be remem
bered this year.
The gifts are purchased and pre
pared for dtstributiop by the state
organizations of the auxiliary, with
cooperation of local units. Each
state supplies gifts for all veterans
in hospitals within the state. States
which have a large number of hos
pitalized veterans compared to their
auxiliary membersNu receive help
from the national organization.
The gifts have an average value
of one dollar, and are selected, as
far as possible, to meet the individ
ual needs and desires of the veter
ans. Where practical, they are pre
sented to the disabled men by aux
iliary members visiting the hospitals.
In "many of the hospitals, Christmas
trees are decorated and Christmas
parties and entertainments given.
In addition to the work for the
men in the hospitals, the auxiliary
contacts the needy families of these
men and supplies Christmas food
and gifts. At a number of hospitals
arrangements have been made for
the disabled veterans to select gifts
for their children, and these are sent
In the name of the veteran. Last
year this family contact service
reached 7875 families at Christmas
time.

recovery of the disabled men.

Auxiliary Holds
Christmas Party
Over three hundred members and
friends enjoyed the Christmas party
held Jointly by the American Legion
and auxiliary Monday evening In
Fraternal temple.
Appropriate decorations to the
Christmas season were carried out,
with a tree in each room under
which food and gifts were placed by
members for the filling of Christmas
baskets.
The auxiliary quartet, consisting
of Grace Zosel, Vida Lou Starr, Ar-
lene Brown and Mildred Wyatt, will
call at several homes this week and
sing Christmas carols. They will also
sing carols during the auxiliary ra
dio broadcast over KSLM Thursday
at 9:30 pin.
