Monday, November 21, 1938 The Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon Six Whitman Confident of Ability to Defeat Willamette U Windup of Interscholastic Football Season Due Thanksgiving Day Game BOO-HOOS sounded when Tickle George Schmidt of North cast high was removed from tame at Philadelphia. Skits and Scratches By Fred Zimmerman Capital Journal 8 port Editor A road without turn would be a mighty monotonous thoroughfare and likewise a aeries of football fames over a period of years with one side taking all of the lickings wouldn't be exactly cricket. So after six years of being on the re ceiving end the Whitman oollega Missionaries have decided to do some thing about It. That some thing will be demonstrated at Wil lamette's expense (they hope) next Thursday afternoon at 3 o'c'ock. Coach "fipec" Keene's margin of wins during the past six years has been entirely unanimous to say the least. His clubs have totted up a grand total of 109 points during that time as against six for the Missionaries. Six wins In a row for the Bearcats with Whitman be ing whitewashed every leason ex cept last when they managed to tally a lonesome touchdown. That Unt ail of the yarn, that's Just the beet of It Inso far as Willamette Is concerned. Prior to 1931 Whitman won every eonteet with the excep tion of IBt when the Bearcats came oat ahead 40 to IS. That'i the game which Spee Keene eredlts with giving him the big gest thrill he has enjoyed elnce hooking np with the Methodist Institution, That was the pitch ing duel m which Curtis (Hi ram) French went for a touch down every time a baekfleld partner threw to him. One odd clreumatanee eoneemlng ath letic relatlonHhlps between Wil lamette and Whitman Is the fact that there never has been a tie game of football doling their IS years of gridiron Joust ing. The elonrsi thing to a deadlock came In 1924 when Willamette loot t 1 by the margin of a mlMcd goal kick. The most lopMded wore of the series came In 1M4, the year God's gift to attentive audi ence. Dr. Bruce R. Baxter, ar rived en the scene. That 15 to 9 panting still gives Coach "NtjrM Borleske a severe case of ceph alalgia. Borleske Has Reserves for All Positions Walla Walla. Not. 31 ( Mind ful of the fact that their fullback, Jim Morrill, last November amaahed across the Willamette goal for the first touchdown a Northwest con ference eleven had scored on the Bearcats In five seasons of play, the Whitman Missionaries will Invade Salem Thanksgiving day with firm conviction they can repeat the Pa cific university upset of 10 days ago. The 20-7 defeat of Colorado col lege here Armistice day with both Morrill and his beefy running mate, Bill Martin, on the bench, fired the Missionaries with ambition. When news followed that Pacific had brok en the long Willamette victory string, the lads In maize and blue vowed that a string of six consecutive drub bings by their oldest rivals must be snapped, too. Only two seniors will go Into ac tion for the Borleske men Thurs day. They are Captain Dan Oray. tackle, of Seattle, and Karl Schneld mlller. triple-threat back, of Walla Walla. Willamette will face one of the heaviest lines the Missionaries have had In many years and with plenty of reserves for a change. Forced to worry along most of the season with the hard-crashing Mor rill and the shifty but hefty Martin on the sidelines, veteran Coach Nig Borleske has found sophomores Har ry Hellsberg and Jim Cozzens, and freshmen Bud Long, Wayne Eaton, Don Dumont and Johnny Lewis cap able running mates for his veteran quarterback. Whitman's early season record. which showed losses to Whttworth and College of Puget Sound, was at' trlbuted to Inexperience that brought mistakes at crucial times. Against Llnfleld and Colorado college the Missionaries made few mistakes and they dominated play In both divi sions. "This has been the most rapidly developing team I have coached In many years.' Borleske said. "When they are clicking, they can make It interesting for any opposition." The Bearcat probably will find the following foes In blue Jerseys op posite them Thursday: Gordon Saw yer, Phil Raykovltch, Norm Tran. seth, Alfred Rasmussen and Prank Hansen, ends; Captain Dan Oray, Jim Hamby, Don Miller and John Storle, tackles; Was Price. Phil Oraue, Howard Gilliam and Tom Evendon, guards; Al Aschenbrenner, Merle Wagoner and BUI Smith, cen ters; Karl Schneldmlller, Harry Hellsberg, Wayne Eaton, Jim Mor rill, Bud Long, Jim Cozzens, BUI Martin, Don Dumont, Johnny Lewis and John Under, backs. The San Franciscans scored a touchdown midway in the first period and collected a safety line in the fourth. Otherwise the game was scoreless and even, neither team being able to gain through the op posing line. The lone touchdown was the re sult of a well -maneuvered reverse on a Oonzaga punt return. Peter Vis en tin took the punt on his own 24 and advanced to the 30, slanting sharply to the right of the field and pulling the Oonzaga team toward him. As he reached the 30, Al Brag. Don halfback, took the ball and sped away to the clear side and down to the Oonzaga three before he was knocked out of bounds by Tony Canadeo, Oonzaga halfback. Only one other tackier touched Bra ga as he failed to hold on. Vlsen tin scored three plays later and Flsk failed In his try for the extra point. In the fourth period an exchange of punts put the Bulldogs back on their own nine-yard mark. On the second play Mlatovich, Don tackle, crashed through to down Hamacher, Oonzaga substitute halfback, be hind his own goal. Fullerton, Jr. New York, Nov. 31 OP) Four sec tional football champions are sport' lng brand new crowns that can't be knocked off until next season; the 1938 campaign Is practically over In some regions; but the big ques tion of which teams are to be rated the best In the nation, which two will meet New Year's day In the Rose Bowl and In other post-season games, still is to be decided. Most of these problems probably will be Ironed out this week when the Thanksgiving day classics and next Saturday's climax games bring the season almost to Its end. Last 8 a turd ay saw the Big Ten campaign close with Minnesota on top again: Oklahoma complete its sweep of Big Six honors; Duke walk off with the Southern conference crown; Utah take the title In the Rocky Mountain Big Seven and California clinch at least a tie for Pacific coast conference honors. Each of these new champions has a claim of some sort to high nation al ranking, but there are other claims which must be considered, The "major" unbeaten and untied teams are Georgetown In the east Notre Dame and Oklahoma In the mid-west; Texas Christian In the southwest, and Tennessee and Duke in the south. Texas Tech and West ern Reserve may be as good as some of these but they haven't been able to prove it yet. "QUALITY?: NATIONAL'S F Rose Bowl or Milk Route For Trojans San Francisco, Nov. 21 17 Thli unpredictable Pacific Coast confer ence football race swing Into th home stretch this week, and It might mean the Rose Bowl or back to the milk route for the hard-galloping Southern California wax horse. A Thanksgiving day crowd at Lo . Angeles will see U.S.C. hook up with the Bruins of University of Califor nia at Los Angeles in what haa de veloped as the most crucial game of the season. California wound up It season Saturday with a narrow and lucky 6 to 0 win over Stanford. The Oolden Bears have won six games and lost one to O. 8. C. Southern California ha a record of five win and on loss to Washington. The ten members of the confer ence would vote on the western Rose Bowl representative in case of a tie for the championship, and In view of the decisive OJS.C. victory over California It Is expected the Tro jans would get the Invitation. Ken Priestley, the University ot California graduate manager, argues however in case of a tie between U.S.C. and California .the Bears should get the bid because they are defending champions, and as in the prize ring the champ retains hi title In case of a draw. Eastern opponents for the January 2 classic at Pasadena seem narrowed down to Texas Christian, Tennessee, Duke, VUlanova and perhaps Okla homa. The other conference encounter last Saturday provided another of the season's many surprises. At Port land, University of Oregon nipped the comeback aspirations of Wash ington by scoring a 3 to 0 victor on a second-period 23-yard field goal by Halfback Jim Nicholson. Next Saturday Washington State will play Washington at Seattle, and Oregon State will meet Oregon at Portland in conference battles while the International flavor will be pro vided by Dartmouth's powerful squad In a game at Palo Alto with Stanford- Fresh 7, Soldiers Vancouver, Wash.
