Friday, October 21, 1938 The Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon Thret Pope Alludes To Persecutions Of Antiquity Vatican City, Oct. 21 P L'Os servatore Romano, Vatican City newspaper, said today Pope Plus, alluding to persecutions of antiqu ity, had declared "works and per sonages better left in oblivion are being called and recalled on the scene of life and action." It said the pope recalled Julian the Apostate, Nero and the apostle Judas in an audience with arche ologlsts at Castel Oandolfo, his summer palace, yesterday. In a summary of the pope's mess age, the newspaper said he added that "not far away quite a differ ent archeology is being practiced" 4 from the mere exhuming of monu- ments and studying of "dead texts." "As an old man, the father wish ed to ask forgiveness of his sons (the archeologists) if, while they were occupied with such great and comforting matters, he asked them to consider such sad subjects," It added. "It is erroneous archeology and truth which exhumes sinister fig ures to bring them back into exist ence and put In operation sinister works. "He recalled the work of Julian the Apostate with sad, extremely sad, persecutions which, if they were not the most violent and bloodiest, were extremely uncom promising, deceitful and shrewd. "The work has been revived not without informers and apostles of the type and soul of Judas. So saying, the pope meant to recall in the minds of his beloved sons, things with which quite recently newspapers and speakers have been concerned and not among irre sponsible people which have sur f prised and astonished the world the honest world accustomed to honest things. "This persecution, which they still want to deny with truly in credible audacity In face of evi dence of things which the pope observes every day In documents which are ever new, extremely certain and thoroughly verified concerning constantly new situa tions and worse threats. Is truly i profound source of grief.' ENOLEWOOD UNITED BRETHREN N. 17th and Nebraska Sta. O. E. Pos ter, minister. Sunday school 9:45 a.m. Raliv day. Sprague, republican, and Henry L. Hess, democrat, might just as well give up. During the past two weeks there has been much talk about a pos sible endorsement of Sprague by the governor. Here's how It all started. A couple of weeks ago the gover nor made an offside remark at ,a press conference that he had "Just put some eggs under the old hen and they will hatch in a few days." This remark was Interpreted In some quarters as meaning the executive would come out against Hess, who defeated him in the primary. Then Tuesday the bubble burst when the governor released the Moody report on the prosecution of Oregon's war on labor terrorism, This was the hatching of the eggs. Persons close to the governor say he will stay out of the campaign. "The governor knows better than to act like a clown In endorsing Sprague," one of these persons said. We feel, and many prominent Sprague supporters agree, that an endorsement of Sprague would help elect Hess. People Just don't like to see democrats monkeying In repub lican affairs. The governor remains bitter to ward 'Hess, but he doesnt plan to say a word against him. Martin feels that he has no business taking part in a campagn in which he Isn't in volved personally. He never got over Secretary Ickes' endorsement of Hess during the turbulent democratic primary. Ickes said Martin was "at heart no new dealer." Martin retaliated by callin? Ickes "Washington's No. 1 thunderbug and a renegade mug wump republican. Ickes will be in Oregon Sunday. but the governor won't be on hand to greet him. If Ickes wants to inspect the capltol (a PWA project under Ickes) it will be closed, as It always is on Sundays. I won't be around to receive him because I have to go to church." the governor said with his famous twinkle in his eye. There Is a possibility that Ickes will make a speech favoring Hess, whom he has endorsed again. But if Ickes mentions the governor in an uncomplimentary manner, the gov ernor probably will answer. If Ickes spouts off too much, the governor will take another crack at him. But the governor's answer will not mention the candidacies either of Sprague or Hess," a close friend of the governor said. tlnue through next week.
