The homes for the boys are call. ed, 8teele, Jones, Hoff, Olcott, Pierce, Holman, past or present members of the board of control. Regime Progressing Since the appointment of Dr. B. D. Byrd as superintendent In 1829 many Innovations have been Intro duced and It has been one of the policies of Dr. Byrd and his staff to make Fairview a home for the in mates Instead of an institution. Variety In amusements and en tertainment hat been augmented, radios are permitted, moving pic tures are shown and the Salem ma niclpal band gives a concert each year on the spacious lawn In front of the office building. Dr. Byrd served as assistant un der Dr. J. M. Smith from 1931 un tile the latter's retirement In 1929 An Improved parole system ob tains at the home and those pa tients or Inmates coming under this group are under the direct super vision of the parole officer and many are placed tn homes by that officer who tries to help the Indi vidual adjust himself to his new environment and duties a well as to keep a check on his conduct. In a hospital supplied with the most modern equipment. The hospital has the following departments: surgery, physiother apy, bacteriology, roentgenology, eye, ear, throat and nose ana den tistry. There are 593 acres at Fairview under cultivation, many of the in mates performing labor on the farm, In the gardens, In the poultry and dairying divisions, in the hog ranch, the butchering plant and In general farm work. Much "of the food supplies for the home are ob tained from the farm, milk, butter, eggs, pork, beef, vegetables of all kinds, fruits and poultry. Hay and grain are also raised. At the present time there are 1007 inmates. Including a number on parole who are still listed in the Institution due to the possibility of having to be returned. Relative to those on parole the officers believe that If the patients of the higher mental grades are given the proper care and training through early childhood and led safely through early adolescence and taught to feel that they have a place In the world, they are likely to become useful and law-abiding citizens who are able to earn their own living. The officers engaged In parole work endeavor to help the Individual ad Just himself to the limit of his ability. There art 113 employes on the payroll of the home. Their -extensive and elaborate stocK oi merchandise consists of household domestics exclusively, fea turing the better grades of blankets, comforts, towels and linens. When Mr. and Mrs. Hunt decided to enter the business field with this latest conceit there was no other store like It In the United States, the launching of the project took place In November 19M when they obtained limited space In a local furniture store. Lately the resort was taken over by Mr. and Mrs. 8. H. Logan, of Salem, who are now oper ating It as a sanitarium, with more than 20 modem steel beds, doctor in connection and masseuse.
