Greater WillameHe Valley News Two Exclusive News Dispatches By Special Corresponilenfi Wednesday; April. 13, 1938 Lebanon Berry Festival Acquires New Park Location Council Gives Full Approval On Board Choice Lebanon Purchase of the Krum ml property aa recommended by the Strawberry festival board was unanimously approved by members of the Lebanon Commercial club meeting In the Lebanon hotel Mon day night. Hie price. )t was said, la $3100, and It Is believed the club may make arrangements to pay (1000 down and the balance at rate of 1200 per year. The property was purchased tor use as a permanent site for the festival and also for use as a park and community center. Located on east Grant street, It Is close to the city center and has many other ad' vantages. It la planned In the course of tune to erect one or more build ings to be used for exhibits and for large meetings. This year's festival, however, will be held on the high school campus as Drevlously announced. Another feature of the meeting was the report of Hiram Groves on a plan to eliminate and curb soli citation for funds. The plan, which would create a fund from which contributions would be allowed as a board would see fit, was returned to the committee which will set a tentative budget after merchants v have turned In estimates to the committee showing the amount of their annual contributions. Although some objections were raised to the plan as presented, as a whole It was well received. The meeting also heartily approv ed a proposal to renew efforts for securing a new post office building In Lebanon. It waa declared that new federal funds may soon be re leased and Lebanon with Its con stantly increasing postal receipts eligible for such a structure. Leban on la third of the several Oregon cities on the approved list for new post offices for which moneys have been allocated but not released, it was said. The club went unanimously on record aa favoring the efforta of the V. 8. Forest Service to develop the Three Fingered Jack area In the high Cascadea for a winter play ground. Dewey Anderson, to the Shrlner's hospital, Portland, for check-up. Dewey is an infantile paralysis victim and has been patient there and had several cor rectlve operations. He Is doing nice ly now and la able to play with other children. Mrs. F. A. Anderson suffered serious heart attack last week at the home of her daughter in Port' land. The community club met at the hall Friday night with President Hobart Smith presiding. There was a good attendance and a program aa follows: Numbers from the Blind school, the Christian church quar tet and a moving picture from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber company, entitled, "Always Trust a Life guard." J. Morris, O. W. Gorton and Mr. Kelly were appointed on the nominating committee for offl- cera for next year. Refreshments were served. Lyons Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Trask and daughter Jeanne of Scholea were weekend guests at the home of his father, Louis Trask. Mrs. Frank Potter and niece, Miss Ermll Trask, who is a student at Oregon State college, visited Satur day at the J. H. Johnston home and the home of Mlsa Trask's grand- father, Louis Trask. Mrs. Oeorge McNamara of Kelso, Wash, Is visiting this week at the home of her brother, John Warden and family, and her mother, Mrs. May Williams. Miss Oenleve Hallin, who is student at the Portland Business college, Is spending her spring va cation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Hallin. The teachers from the Lyons school, Miss Maxlne Huber and Da vid Staley, chartered a truck and took the school pupils to Salem to see "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Miss Zeta Prichard of the McCulley Mountain school also took her pupils the same day. McCoy Mr. and Mrs. Olen Martin and family visited Mr. and Mrs. Stromm at Valley Junction over the week end. Mrs. Fred Rhode spent last week visiting at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Beck of Eugene. Mrs. Beck will be remembered aa Helen Prang of tills community. Essays are Wanted Lebanon Merrill Smith, Lebanon postmaster, yesterday issued an an nouncement urging all Lebanon high school atudenta to enter the essay contest on the subject "Wings Across America," being held in con nectlon with National Air Mall week May 15-21. The contest offers many worthwhile prises, he aald, with full details available at the local post office. The postmaster also said he was appointing several commit tees to tie In with the observance nationally and also with the plan to establish Albany aa a port of call for air service on one or more days urlng the week. Band Given Banner Lebanon Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Skinner have completed a "Skin ner's Satin" banner on which la In scribed in large yellow letters the words "Lebanon HI School Band Lebanon." The banner, three feet across and four feet long, Is In tended to be used for Identification of the band In all public- appear ances. It will be presented to the band shortly. Retreat Arranged ML Angel The annual young men'a retreat will be held at St Benedict's abbey from Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock until Satur day noon. Rev. Vincent Koppert.
