EXCLUSIVE NEWS DISPATCHES GREATER WILLAMETTE VALLEY NEWS BY SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1936 C. E. UNITS OF STATE GATHER ON AUGUST 24 rurner The 17th annual summer conference (or religious leadership training of the Christian Endeavor society of Oregon, will convene Aug ust 24 at the Turner tabernacle and continue through August 30. Preparatory to the opening of the conference the executive commit tee of the state Christian Endeavor union will meet at Turner for two days. August 22 and 23. Arthur J. Stanley, the president, will preside at the executive meeting. Included on the committee are all state offi cers, union presidents, ex-state pres idents and denominational repre sentatives. The regional vice-pres idents and union presidents will have special meetings together. The program schedule for the summer conference will include a Bible study period for 45 minutes each morning. These will be under the leadership of Rev. James A. Smith, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Cottage Grove, and pas tor of the Presbyterian church at Cottage Grove, and pastor-counsellor of the state union. He has chos en as his theme "The Christian Stewardship of time, of personality, of talents of possessions and of the gospel, and Jesus, the ideal stew ard. The Christian Endeavor summer conference will be held on the grounds of the pioneer Christian tabernacle in the southeast part of Turner. Many of the class periods will be held outdoors. In addition to the large tabernacle which seated 3000 persons In the early days, there are dormitories, laundry and baths, dining hall and restaurant, and camping facilities for those who bring tents to camp. Miss Viola Ogden of Portland, reg istrar of the state union, will give information. Several hundred young people and faculty leaders are ex pected to attend the religious train ing conference. Barn Moved to Make Way for New Route Aurora The slate n.ghway coin mission moved the Holzman barn on the old Ratieburg farm, In pre paration for the new highway route through northwest Aurora. The Holzman family expects to move this fall and the new owners, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bpath of Hherwood, will take possession as soon as the house Is vacated. HOME-COMING ORAWS CROWD Turner The third annual home coming picnic of the Cloverdale Summitt Hill resident was held Sunday at the Cloverdale school grounds with approximately a hun dred in attendance. A basket din ner was enjoyed at noontime, fol lowed by the business session and election of new officers which was held In the schoolhouse. John W. Schifferer was re-elected president of the organization, Arthur E. Kun fce, vice-president, and Mrs. Louis Kennies, secretary. Reminiscences of former days were reviewed by Mrs. Alice Wlpper. one of the oldest residents of the Summitt Hill community. The now deserted Summitt Hill school house wan constructed In the autumn of 1678. and four generations of the Wlpper family attended it. Several years ago It was consolidated with the large standard Cloverdale school district which was named the "Three-Oat" school house the first year It was built. Musical selections and readings were given by Mr. and Mrs. Bert Amend of Portland, Ore. One of the various diversions of entertain ment Included archery under the direction of Ben A. Kamtn.skl of Salem. The 1037 picnic and home coming will be held the third Sun-, day in August at the Cloverdale j schoolhouse grounds. Accident on Road Results in Injury Gales Qua Olsen of the Niagara neighborhood, sustained severe cuts about the face and suffered minor bruises the first of the week when his car and trailer loaded with hay, left the road and rolled over badly damming the top of the car, as he was returning from Sllvrrton. Milton Be.st and Madeline, Wesley and Maxlne who arrived a week ago from their home in Fedora. South Dakota, have decided to remain in Silverton to establish their residence. A group of- relatives and friends surprised the family at their home in the Monson addition Wednesday evening with a shower and genera, house warming with a late supper furnished by the guests. Orville Hayward Painfully Injured Gates Orville Hayward received a painful injury while at work In a logging camp near Gates when he was struck on the side of his face and ear by a line. He is at the home of his mother, Mrs. Ruby Winters, recovering. WOODBURN TO ASK WPA HELP Woodburn At the last meeting of the city council the mayor and recorder were instructed to make application for a blanket WPA pro ject for city improvements during the winter months. It is planned to construct concrete sidewalks In nu merous places under this project and also make any other necessary Improvements. City Recorder Beach was in structed to employ an engineer from Salem to make up a map of the as sessment district of the East Lin coln street improvement. An offer of $700 was made for the Schermer property on Second street, also known as the Baillie property, and the council voted to accept the offer providing the ex penses of the deal be borne by the purchaser. The water board was authorized to brlniF in plans for the construc tion of the new pump house. A complaint was made by Saun ders and Stuckey of tennis balls be ing lodged on the roof of their ga rage and players climbing. up on the roof after them. In order to abate this nuisance Councilman Austin was Instructed to provide some means of keeping the balls off the roof and was allowed $50 ex pense money for the Job. The city tennis courts are located directly back of the garage. Marshal Ashland was authorized to purchase handcuffs after having had several recent experiences when they were badly needed. The recorder was instructed to obtain places for putting up two more city bulletin boards. Wilson of this city have closed ft deal for the property on South Broad street known as the Mrs. Esther Neal place, with the late Mrs. Neal ' heirs. The property consists of a lot 60 by 138 feet and a seven room dwelling erected a number of years ago. The house will be razed and the lot cleaned up and leased to Cecil Price to use as an extension to his lumber yard which it adjoins on the south ldc.
