"Wedding Plans Kevealed Salem friends will be Interested to learn that Miss Betty Browning of Portland has completed the plans for her marriage to Arthur J. porter on July 27. The wedding will be quietly solemnized at St. Stephen's cathedral at 4 o'clock. wh?n Dean Horace M. Scotts, who is making an interesting tour of China and Japan miring the summer months. High lights of a letter received this week written just bfeorc Lillian arrived in Shanghai, tell of the overland trip between Yokohama and Kobe and her first glimpse of Japanese life in Yokohama as she strolled down Theater street, encountering on the way just two Americans . . n trek to Kamakura where she. and a croup of friends, viewed the great Buddha and then on to Tokyo and the famous Imperial hotel where they saw Douglas Fairbanks, Lady Ashley, Noel Coward, well known author, and Zlmbalist, renowned vi olinist. Of the ride from Tokyo to Kyoto she says, "the train ride was fun and It took us over seven hours to get there ... At Kyoto I partic ularly enjoyed going through the cloisonne, laquer and damascene factories and, of course, I couldn't resist buying! , . In eating at Jap anese restaurants we kneel on the lloor and eat with chopsticks. I'm getting good with them now!" From Kobe they went out to the open sea and on to Shanghai about which we hope to hear more later. A ROMANCE of two Oregon Staters was brought to an interest ing culmination in Manila recently when Miss Evelyn Walker became the bride of Norman Whitfield of Bagto, P. I. Evelyn was a Gamma Phi Beta on the Oregon State cam pus and is well known to the col lege set. Ladies' Day at Country Club Silverton Ladies' Day at the Country club was observed Thursday with a flag tournament in which Mrs. W. L. McGinnis won the prize for the A flight, ana Mrs. Alfred Adams for the B flight. Mrs. Prank Syring and Miss Ruth Hubbs were noon luncheon hostesses for eighteen members. Next Thursday the women will play a Gopher-Grey Digger handi cap tournament. Mrs. George Steel hammer and Mrs. Charies Reynolds will be luncheon co-hostesses. Court Capital City of the Catholic Daughters of America recently pre sented the Salem General hospital with one dozen infant's gowns, shecte and carrying blankets, which were made by members of the court. SAN DIEGO BOUND in a J-5 Travelair Speedwing plane Tuesday were Robert Hofer and his wife the former Dorothy Hester, and R. M. Hofer (Mac). Mrs. Hofer is a widely known aviatrix who has held several records for women fliers. . . The Hofers, former Salem residents. now divide their time between their Dunthorpe house and their Agate Beach summer place when not making jaunts about the country in their planes. GLOWING ACCOUNTS Of the national convention of the Ameri can Association of University Wom en held June 25 to 28 at Los Ange les are seeping back to Salem. The convention headquarters were at the Ambassador hotel and delegates from ten of the fourteen Oregon branches were present. Seven hun dred and fifty voting delegates were In attendance and other 1200 peo ple registered for the convention. The topic of the session was "Uni versity Women as Makers of Social History" and two days of the con vention were devoted to topics of economics and consumers interest One day was devoted to the discus sion of "Education for National Un derstanding and Reconstruction In the United States" and "Education for International Understanding and Reconstruction In the Indepen dent World." Dr, Neta Glass, pres ident of Sweet Briar college and sister of Senator Carter Glass, pro sided at the convention, She is the national president of the associa tion. Two teas of note were held for the visitors at the Women's Uni versity club of Las Anoeies and at the Edell club. Two dinners were also outstanding, one being a "Cali fornia" dinner at which Dr. Aurelia Reinhart, president of Mills college, presided, where a pageant "Under Six Flags" written by Miss Marion Cox was presented and the other being a radio and motion picture dinner at which the executive sec retary of the Theater Guild and Miss Evelyn Venable, screen star spoke Members of the Business and Pro-- fessional Women's chorus, state champions, who arc attending the national convention In Seattle this week-end. Convention Starts In Seattle Sunday MEMBERS of Business and Protessional Women's clubs throughout the country are in Seattle this week-end to attend the national convention. Representatives from the Salem club and the state prize-winning chorus are in at- tendance. Dr. Helen Louise Cros by, local president, will serve as del egate of the Oregon Federation and is a member of the national nominating committee. Miss Helen Brelthaupt will repre sent the Salem club as delegate. , Club members attending include Miss Susan Varty, Miss Ruth Moore. Miss Mcrl Dimick, Miss Dorothy Cornelius and the chorus members, Mrs. Winifred R. Herrick, presi dent of the Oregon Federation, will be one of the distinguished women in the receiving line at the formal rose reception which will be held Sunday night at the Olympic hotel, convention headquarters. The Oregon Federation is to serve Seattle Folk Visit Capital Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Meyers have as their week-end guests Mr. and Mrs. Charles Craig of Seattle Mrs. Craig will be remembered as Helen Jordan. The Craigs have been spending several days at Breitenbush, follow ing a stay in the capital with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sumter Craig. Later they will go to the Oregon beaches. Aumsville Mrs. T. Y. Match Play Of Interest Woodburn A team of twelve wo men from the Woodburn Golf club motored to McMlnnville Friday where they were defeated 32 to 1 in match play with a team from the Yamhill golf and country club.
