THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON I I MOCKING HOUSI .BY WALTER C. BROWN. SYNOPSIS: Sergeant Harper haa proved to hla own BaUsfactloa that tha police Man and the atranger found dead In rterre Dufresne'a housa vera murdered, and did not kill each other. He bellevea na of the guna used la In the house, but when he falla to find It, Dufresne rldl ules him. Now ha and Detective Lafferty are aearchlng the room In whleb the Du fresne household waa locked up while the remainder of the nig house waa aearehed. Chapter 28 WET STRING "No luck, Steve," Lafferty report ed, finished with his part of the search. "Whatfve you got there?" "Just a length of twine," Lafferty answered, "I picked It off the door, near the window-seat." "The window-seat? That's where Dufresne and Macklln were sitting. Let's have a look at It." Lafferty handed Is over, with a chuckle. "Big clue?" he chaffed. But Harper was paying little at tention to his assistant's Joking, He roughly estimated the length nt the twine at about twelve feet. "Du fresne has been wearing that lounging robe all morning," he mused. "It could have fallen from his pocket." He ran the tough cord through his fingers. "It feels wet here In the center, Jack." Lafferty was still smiling. "You don't even know that any one dropped It. It might have been there before we came to this room at all." "Then it would have been noticed THE INVITATION By Mary Graham Bonner Outside the door stood Mrs. Quacker from Quackerville. "What brings you here?" asked Willy Nllly. "Well, quack, auack," said Mrs. Quacker, "I came, right over as soon as I saw, what a beautiful. rainy day it was turning out to be, and I thought I would Invito Mr. and Mrs. Quacko, and the others to, come over to Quackerville and talk over a plan I have. It's ae-n wonderful duckish plan and if any one else is interested, by all means come along." "I'm going to be busy here at tending to some chores," said Willy Nllly. "I don't have to worry about any fires now that It seems as though we are In for some real rain. Top Notch Is going to put his gen eral store to rights and Christopher tils nest." "I've promised the cubs that I'd take them to look for things to eat 4nd we'll swim and have some fun, aid Honey Bear, "as we've been fsvlng lots of worry. Mrs. Quacko will tell you about It." "I'm going along with Honey Bear and the cubs," said Jelly Bear, "but we may look in on you on the way bock from our trip. "I must have some exercise," said Rip, the dog, wagging his tall po litely. "That's Just as well," said Mrs. Quacker. "The ducks will be the ones really Interested in this plan." "We d love to come," said Mrs. Quacko. "My dear, it Is really very good of you to Invite us. And you do want all of us?" "Every one of you," said Mrs. Quacker with a flourish of her right wing. And off they waddled. Tomorrow "The Plan" ACROSS L Tallies!) lean ing amphib ian t. "Look at It this way. As sume that Dufresne took the gun and hid It. We know it's still in the house, for no one has gone out even as far as the garage, whoever took It had to plant It, and quickly, In a place where It would be hidden not only from us, but from every one else In the house. "Where could It be hidden so quickly and so safely? There was no time to prepare a special place nor to go out and bury It In the grounds." "Well, one could open a window and heave it out as far as possible. Or, there may be a little sliding panel somewhere in good old melo drama style." Harper nodded. "Laugh If you will but there's always the possi bility of a secret cupboard some where. Pour yards of twine how was It used?" "Well, I've heard of things being hung behind shutters and outside window sills and inside chimneys, but in that case we wouldn't have the string." "Yes, and It's wet In the middle. That suggests contact with water or snow I" "We've looked around outside and we've been up in the little cupola. There's not a single mark In the snow on the roof." Harper was deep in thought. "I'm sure the gun Is hidden, not Just thrown away to got rid of it. Sup pose you call at the neighboring houses and find out if anything unusual was heard or seen last night. In the meantime I'll try to squeeze a little lnformaton from the servants." The detective folded the piece of twine and put It away in his vest pocket. Lafferty set out on his quest, Harper going as for as the front door with him. Then, as he returned along the hall, he glanced into the drawing-room in passing and was surprised to see Dufresne, still wearing his lounging robe, pac ing up and down, head bent, eyes on the floor, hands thrust deep Into his pockets. Harper moved on quietly, smiling to himself as he unlocked the door to the breakfast-room. He had no doubt but that the master of the house had missed the piece of twine and was searching for it. It was getting on toward noon and Harpet shut the door of the breakfast-room behind him and sat down at his work-table to re-arrange his plans in accordance with the vital changes the last few hours had made in the case. The cose had now been In Har per's hands for something like fourteen hours and he had no need to apologize for the progress made. There was not the slightest doubt In his mind that some one still present In this house had planned and executed this whole scheme. The difficulty would arise In link ing one of them to the facts so long as the Identity of the masquerader remained unrevealed. It was impos sible to assign a motive out of their slender knowledge. At least four of the eight persons In the Dufresne household were un der direct suspicion In Harper's mind. He was mulling over these various personalities, as they had revealed themselves to his observa tion under different phases, when he was Interrupted by a sharp knock on the door. A brisk young man wearing a gray overcoat and hat entered, and, behind him, a short, dark-skinned man bundled up In a heavy fur coat. "Tin Harris, of the Central Bureau,' said the young man, sa luting. "Detective Lafferty sent me out to trace that disguise. This Is Mr. Pagllottl, who has a theatrical supply house on Twelfth Street. He can Identify the beard and the man who bought It." "Can you Identify these as having come from your stock?" "Yes, sir. We make everything In our own workrooms and I'd know our Roods anywhere. The finest workmanship, sir." Oaglolttl spoke with very little accent, his bearing confident, his black eyes agleam with Intelligent curiosity. Harper held up one of the pic tures. "Is this the man who made the purchase?" Yes, sir. I remember him dis tinctly." "When was the purchase made?" "Your man asked me mat. I re plied, early In October." October?" exclaimed Harper, half rising in nis chair. The Italian proudly produced a cash sales voucher. The date was October tenth, just three months to the day before the masquerader met nis death while wearing this pur chnse.
