OREGON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1933 AIRPORT TUBES URGED TO SPEED NATION'S MAIL New York, IP) Two New York congressmen have planed to over come the drag on the speed of air mail between the time tt reaches the airport and arrives at the city post oi nee. , . They are Congressman Stephan A. Rudd and Congressman Eman uel Cellar of Brooklyn. Represen tative Rudd has Introduced a bill Into congress authorizing the post office department to install and operate underground pneumatic mail tubes between Floyd Bennett Field and the Brooklyn General Post Office. Congressman Cellar's bill provides for tubes between Grand Central airport and the main post office at Pennsylvania Station, Manhattan. They will push these bills at the next session of congress, confi dent that if they go through, the mall tubes will prove self-liquidating projects as far as the govern ment la concerned. It Is pointed out that It takes air mail longer to travel between the main post office in Boston and New York and the airporta at which mail is 'received for these cities than it takes a fast plane to run from New York to Boston. Air mail arriving at a Newark airport in the early aftcrnobn cannot be delivered by carrier in New York City until the next morning, since the last carrier leaves the post office on his mail delivery routes at 2:15 p. m. The use of pneumatic tubes, propon ents of these "bills point out, would enable air mail to reach the post office in a few minutes a iter its ar rival at an airport and catch a late delivery the same day. (Asso ciated Press Photo) ' TIME NEARING FOB INFLATION Washington, Sept. 21 (JF) An as sertion President Roosevelt gradual ly was brlnclnu about inflation of the currency, but that "he would not even dare to admit it" was made to day by Senator Thomas, democrat of Oklahoma, a leader in the infla tion movement to increase farm commodity prices. "It Is my opinion," Thomas told newspapermen, "that President Roo sevelt does not want to make a statement on inflation because if he even hinted it commodity prices would Jump too fast and too high before the money Is distributed among the people. "When all these codes arc signed up under tho NRA and millions of people aro returned to' work, then tho president will be free to openly, concede inflation. That time is now approaching rapidly. The cotton and other farmers now harvesting their crops want inflation immediately so they can obtain benefits from it." .Thomas said that "Mr. Roosevelt by a mere statement could Increase prices of all commodities within a few minutes but I think he is try ing to bring It about gradually in order to avert anything drastic." In Se quoia park alone during July more than 15,000 persons signed the park trail registers. NAVY BUILDING WORRIES BRITAIN London, Sept. SI (P) The British government told United States Ambassador-at - large Norman H. Davis on his recent visit here that the American naval building pro gram might make a bad impression on other countries on the eve of the disarmament conference. This authoritative explanation was advanced today for reports from Washington that Britain had requested the United States to defer its construction schedule. It is understood Mr. Davis -was' informed that Britain was not her self worried about American con struction but feared others might be. This was qualified by a statement that there might be apprehension in England if a naval race developed between Japan and America, in which case Britain might be forced to enter the competition. A special full dress cabinet meet ing was called today to discuss im portant contentions put forward by the French in connection with the projected disarmament convention. Disputable problems regarding se curity, tiie supervision of arma ments and control, are understood to have been raised in the Anglo French conversations in Paris this week, and it is the task of the Brit ish government to try to reconcile the divergencies of opinion. ROAST PIG CAUSES SCANDAL In Cotabato, in the Philippines, recently, the chief of police ar rested, without apparent cause, two men who had just completed the roasting of a pig, and took the pris- oners and porker to the police sta tion. A few minutes later the entire police force held a anquet with roast pig on the menu. A few days later the two men filed a complaint against the chief, now the munici pal president has cited the Justice of the peace for Issuing the com plaint. NEW JERSEY STOCK EXCHANGE FORMED New York, Sept. 21 IP) Organ ization of a New Jersey stock ex change comprised entirely of mem bers of the New York stock ex change has been definitely decided upon, it was announced today on the basis of S42 adherents to the plan.
