TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1933 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM. OREGON CHICAGO CUBS SPEED TOWARDS TRAINING CAMPS Chicago, Feb. 21 P) CIiIcoro's Cubs players and officials today were speeding toward Santa Cata llna Island, Calif., to begin prepar lng themselves for a big effort to regain tne National league title. The first squad left last night, cheered by about 300 northsido fans. The first squad of New York Olants horned in on part of the cheering, having Joined the Cubs for the trip westward. Manager Charley Grimm's crew will reach the Island Thursday and on Friday will get down to work. As the train left, Orimm had only one thing to say about his training program, and it applied only to Catcher Leo Hartnett, who showed up weighing many pounds over bis playing weight. "Take a look at that Hartnett," he said, "he reminds me of a nice fat porker. Will he chase goats up the hillsides on the island?" INDIAN ALL-STARS WILL PLAY DALLAS Dallas The Chemnwa All-Stars will invade Dallas Wednesday night for a return game with the town team. Earlier In the season the townies defeated the Indian quint on its own floor by the narrow margin of one point and the coming game promises to be fast and close. Browning Of Missouri Shakes Mat Title Off Strangler Lewis' Head New York, Feb. 21 (U.R) Jim Browning, Missouri farm er who developed legs of steel by gripping wine casks, clamp ed his legs about Ed "Strnngler" Lewis' barrel-like body last nignt ana shook tne world's heavy- weight wrestling crown off the Strangler's head. Lying on the ring mat hi Madi son Square Garden with Lewis held in a leg scissors, Browning did a quick sideways "turnover" that whirled the champion through the air and thumped his bald head on the floor. Again the Missourlan did his "turnover" and again the bald pate bounced on the floor. It was enough. The burly Kcntucklan, veteran of 3600 grapllng matches, was groggy. Browning loosened his legs and pinned the champion s shoulders to the mat. Browning was recognized as world champion in New York state when Referee Jack Denning slapped him on the shoulders, just 55 minutes and 50 seconds alter the match started. He was given a great ovation By tne 7,000 fans. Lewis was booed and jeered as he left the ring; nearing 50, the old fellow had been an unpopular cnampion since ins claims to the title were recognized last summer by tne New York Athletic commission, after Jim Londos' claim to the title had been vacated. Londos is still recognized as tltleholder in- some parts of the country. Still other sec tions recognize Ed Don George of Canada. Seattle Acquires Detroit Pitcher Seattle, Feb. 21 (IP) Pruett Sew- ell, who won 17 games and lost six last year for Raleigh, is the latest addition to the Seattle pitching staff. Leading nearly all the way, the Vandals were out In front 10 to 10 near the end of the first half, al though a Washington rally led by Heaman and Oaler, guards, pulled it up to 21 to 19, with Idaho leading. In the second half, Warner, Ida ho forward, and Hurley, a substi tute center, raised the lead to 27 to 19. Shortly before the game, Har old Lee, Husky forward, received word that his father had probably been fatally injured in an automo bile accident, but he stayed in to tally five points. Oaler was high scorer with 14 points. The defeat gave Washington eight victories and five defeats and the teams play again tonight. Oregon State, league leader, has won 10 and lost four and has only two more games to play, both with the weak Oregon five, which has won only one game out of 12 this season. The win was the first for Idaho over Washington in six years. SCIO PLAYS LEBANON Scio On the Sclo gym floor Thursday evening the Sclo firemen basketball team will play a town team from Lebanon. Coach J. A. Withers of Sclo predicts a fast game that will require action and endur ance to outdo the local boys. The Sclo boys won the tilt Saturday night with the Salem Congregation al team 35-22 here. In the final league game at Stayton last week the locals were beaten 55 to 29. HEAVYWEIGHTS TAKE SPOTLIGHT With one grappler Just about as unpopular as the other, Salem fans will apparently be In a neutral mood when they troop to the armory to night to witness the exhibition be tween Al Karaslck and Abe Kaplan. Each man is familiar with all of the torture holds and all the grim aces of pain which accompany their application. Everything in each man's bag of tricks is expected to be brought out during the evening. The one hour preliminary will be between Herman Olson and Mutt Eddy. Ambrose To Fight At Scio Wednesday Sclo A 28-round card of fast box ing Is scheduled for 8cio February 22 at 8:30 p.m. The card as arranged Is as follows: Main event: Budd Ambrose, Sa lem vs. Rainwater, Albany. CHEMAWA PLAYS SALEM TONIGHT Two tight basketball games are anticipated tonight when the first and second squads of Salem high invade Chemawa for their second meeting with the Indian quints. The "B" teams of the two schools will clash at 7 o'clock. This fracas will be followed by a meeting between the first squads. Coach Huntington has announced that lie will do a little experiment ing tonight. He will likely shut En gle from guard to center and place Perrlne In one of the guard posi tions, teaming up with Mosher. This arrangement Is calculated to permit Mosher to do a little more offensive work. Whether the new lineup will be continued In effect will depend upon how it clicks against the In dians. Tonight's main event should be a fast one since both coaches special ize on fast breaking offense. Coach Lavelle has been forced to shift his lineup several times this season. However, the showing made against Silverton would seem to Indicate that the redskins have once more hit their stride and will be all prim, ed to give Salem a real ride. Lafayette Beaten By Sheridan, 46 - 9 Sheridan Friday evening Sheri dan high's basketball tossers won an easy game from Lafayette high on the latter's floor. The final score was 46 to 9.
