With each session of legislature Salem Is the scene of many H gala affair and this year is no exception. There are large affairs, such as the scholarship loan tea and the annual Guest Day, which the Salem Woman's club Is sponsoring during the coming week and there are the charmingly informal afternoons of bridge and tea with just a few Salem matrons and maids bidden to greet- prominent visiting matrons. All In all it is enough to keep us dashing from one good time to another. Perhaps the largest affair of the week was the party given by Mrs. Zvlpha Burns of Portland and Mrs. Elizabeth Glatt of Woodburn Mon day evening in compliment to the senate secretaries. Those bidden for the evening were Miss Helen Ender lin. Bishop on Court street was the scene of a charmingly arranged o vririnv afternoon when over 100 prominent Salem matrons and maids called to greet Mrs. Martha Thompson upon the occasion of her aOth birthday. Interesting Betrothal Announced At a large luncheon for which she was hostess Thursday at the Uni versity club in Portland, Miss Dor othy Lane Russell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lane RusseU, an nounced her engagement and the dote of her marriage to Francis Vincent O'Shca, son of Mr. and Mrs. James B. O'Shea, Jr. The ceremony will be quietly sol emnized February 21. Miss Mary Alice Meyer will be the bride's only attendant and Arthur E. Prag will act as best man for Mr. O'Shea. The bride-elect is a graduate of St. Helen's Hall and attended the University of Oregon where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She Is well-known In Sa lem's younger set. A recep tion will follow with all Masons and Eastern Star groups Invited to at-ten-1 Prominent Matrons And Maids To Assist With Annual Y.W.C.A. Drive In the next several weeks Salem maids and matrons will again focus their attention upon philanthropic projects. The winter season has wit nessed corps of charitable women working on worthwhile campaigns and January 29th will see the start of the annual Y. W. O. A. membership drive, a cause that Is close to the heart of women folk for the splendid work It has done among women and girls, and the versatility of Its ac tivities. A number of Salem women have volunteered to assist the V. W. O. A. board members In the cam- paign and on Sunday morning, Jan- uary 29, an explanation of the work of the organization will be made In the various churches of the city. Music Contest To Be Sponsored Much Interest Is being evinced by students of voice, piano and violin in the Junior contest which will open the beginning of the week to continue until National Music week early In May. Miss Elma Weller is in charge of the Salem contest and contest blanks may be obtained from her by local music teachers. The purpose of the contest Is to give a definite aim, to inspire great er effort in artistic achievement through the stimulus of competition and to give the student an oppor tunity to evaluate himself In com parison with others. Contestants will be Judged on six points, Inter pretation technic, rhythm, memory, pedaling and poise. Enjoys One Act Play Tne American Association or un iversity Women met at the Masonic temple for luncheon Saturday af ternoon, followed by a one-act play given under the direction of Miss Genevieve Thayer. The play, a story of the lives of two young married couples, was played by a cast com posed of Vernon Perry, Donald Pou- Jade and Jack Minto. At the luncheon hour covers were placed for 50 members of the A. A. U. W., at long tables centered with striking arrangements of seasonal flowers and greenery. Mrs. J. A. Jeldcrks, president of the local branch, presided. Mrs. Asa Fisher was chairman of the program com mittee and Miss Mabel Robertson acted as chairman of the commit tee on decorations. B. and P. W. To Hear Miss Park The members of the Business and Professional Women's club will meet for dinner at the Marion ho tel Tuesday evening at 6:30 o clock. Portland Wedding Of Local Interest Of great interest to folk through out the northwest was the marriage in Portland Wednesday evening of Miss Esther Alice Allen, daughter of Mrs. Pat Allen, and Wesley Allen Cook, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Cook, which was solemnized In the home of the bride's mother on Port land Heights. The bride, who was given in mar riage by her brother, Benson Allen, wore a modish and becoming dress of heavy white velvet made with high neck and long sleeves, slightly puffed above the elbow. The skirt was floor length. Her veil, caught about her golden hair in a cap of pearls, fell to her waist In front and formed a train in the rear. She carried a bouquet of baby calla lilies. The two honor attendants, Miss Euphemia Patrick of Seattle and Miss Polly Ann Jorgenson of Port land, and the three bridesmaids, Misses Evelyn Cook, Pauline Isher wood and Mrs. Alfred Walsh, all wore similar frocks -of white satin crepe with tiny hats of the same material. The honor attendants car ried arm bouquets of mixed red and white roses. The bridesmaids' bou quets were of American Beauty roses. Leland Theodore Cook acted best man for his brother, and the ushers were Wallace Burkhart of Albany, Bruce Price, Foster Cone, Allen Rcinhart, McDonald Lock- wood, John Logan, Slgfrlcd Unan der and Morris Baker. The ceremony, which was attend ed only by members of the family and Intimate friends, was followed by a large Teception. Mrs. Allen wore a dress of black satin creic with corsage of gardenias. Mrs. Cook wore a dress of black lace and orchids. Following an extended wedding trip in the north Mr, and Mrs. Cook will return to Portland to reside. Both are popular members of the younger set. Mr. Cook is a gradu ate of Oregon State college and his bride is a graduate of the Marlbor ough school of Los Angeles. Leslie P. T. A. Woman's Club Plans Scholarship Loan Tea And Guest Day The coming week will be an exceptionally active one for the members) of the Salem Woman's club with two large affairs planned during tht) week In compliment to guests from Salem and out-of-town points. On) Wednesday atteraoon the annual scholarship loan tea will be held at tha homo of Mrs. D. J. Fry, Sr with members of the club acting as hostesses. The affair, which Is listed on the club's calendar as "Red Letter Day," la given each year for the benefit of Oregon girls who wish to attend Oregon schools. Similar affairs are spon-- sored throughout the state for the same cause, insuring these girls an education. Fifty-five Oregon girls are now in school who are being supported by the loan fund.
