has been arranged after which a
baseball game will follow.
In the hall program of various
entertainment will be given from 1
to 5 o'clock, popular prices will pre
vail at the dinner which will be
served from 5:30 until 7: JO o'clock
In the evening. Rev. H. Walsh will
act as master of ceremonies. A.
B. Mlnaker will give an address of
welcome. The dedication program
of which Mayor Moisan is chairman
will Include the dedication address
by Rev. H. Grafious. presentation
of key by Dr. Riley to Mayor Moi
san. There will be dancing com
mencing at 9 o'clock with the
Mathls orchestra furnishing music.

Sllverton Getting their work out
lined for the coming school year, the
senior division of the Olrl Reserves
have selected their olficers- They
hare chosen for president, Jeanne
Oeder; for vice-president, Mildred
Jenjlns; secretary. Bonita Parsons;
and treasurer, Nellie Shaw.
Outgoing officers are Mildred Jen
kins, president; Jeanne Oeder, vice-
president; Ruth Winchell, secretary,
and Hilda Pounder, treasurer. Mrs.
Lee Alfred la general advisor of both
the senior and Junior divisions of
the Sllverton Girl Reserves, and has
been assisted throughout the year
by Miss Olivia De Quire. Miss Elaine
C lower. Miss Mildred Wharton and
other teachers of the Sllverton
schools.
The Sllverton Woman's club has
also helped through the Olrl Reserve
chairman from the club, Mrs. A. si.
Wcodard. The American Legion
auxiliary has given toe use of their
club room to the Junior and senior
divisions for meetings.
Church Guild Has
Meeting: at Adams'
Hubbard The Guild of the Fed
erated church met Wednesday after
noon at the home of Mrs. Alice Ad
ams on the Pacific highway north
of Hubbard. The meeting was pre
sided over by Mrs. Neva McKentle,
who opened with a short devotional
service. The members sewed for the
annual guild and later In the after
noon spent an hour socially. Re
freshments were served by Mrs. Ad
ams, assisted by Mrs. Catherine Silt,

for a surprise party In her honor
by the members of the Missionary
society of the DYangeucal church,
of which Mrs. Snyder is president.
She was presented with a number
of potted plants. An afternoon of
visiting was enjoyed and conclud
ed with a lunch.

Grace Derrick will be valedictor
ian for her class June third, having
received the highest average tor
her high school course; and Doris

out their high school courses the
two girls have done outstanding
work, with several others In close
competition.
In her freshmen year, Grace re
ceived six l's and two S's; as a
sophomore, seven l's and one a; In
her Junior and senior years, all l's,
making her average 109.
In comparison, Doris received
six l's and two 2's while a fresh
man and sophomore; all l's whl!e a
Junior; and alx I s while a senior.

Woodburn The annual party by
the Girls' Booster club of Wood-
burn high school was held Wednes
day night at which time the new
members chosen for next year's club
were received. Selection of mem
bers for this club la based upon
scholarship, citizenship and par
ticipation In school activities. The
girls chosen for membership are
Lois Seely. Mary Alice Conyne, Ba
sel Slirock, Daisy Shrock, Dorothy
Lee, Selma Oarotbera. Betty Wells,
Beulah Thompson, Dora Dooper,
Ethel Reding, Evelyn Kocher, Le
nore Nendel, Mary Jackson, Mar
tha Amey, Margaret Martin and
Mildred Grim.
The entertainment and business
meeting wss held In the high
school gym. The oath of member
ship was administered to the new
girls and various initiatory stunts
were given. Officers elected were
Hazel Shrock, president; Margaret
Martin, secretary-treasurer; Mary
Jackson, chief booster.. Games and
dancing followed and refreshments
were served in the domestic art
room. Spring flowers and yellow
candles were used effectively on the
aining table.
The committees In charge of the
affair were, entertainment and

Kalian, Either Erlekson. Elizabeth
Miller and Helen Stanton; refresh-
menu, Rea McPeak, Hazel Free

VICTIM OF CRASH
DIES AT HUBBARD
Woodburn Emtl Johnson of 13
North 6th street, Portland, who was
badly injured In an automobile ac
cident Sunday when his car failed
to make the turn at BJelland's cor
ner east of Woodburn. died st the
Hubbard hospital Wednesday night.
Johnson was arrested for reckless
driving and was to have appeared
in Judge Overton's court Thursday
for a hearing. His death was caused
by a fractured skull. He was taken
to the Hubbard hospital Sunday by
Dr. Pemberton shortly after the ac
cident. The body was taken to Port
land where funeral services will be
held.

Charles V. Galloway, chairman of
the State Tax commission, on the
subject, "Taxation In Its Relation
to our Public Schools." The Oregon
State Teachers association commit
tee on taxation reports that Gal
loway Is the outstanding authority
on this subject. The committee In
charge of the affair are:

To Be Discussed
Sllverton The families of the lo
cal 4-H organization have planned a
"500" card party to follow the regu
lar business session of the group to
be held Friday evening at the Sll
verton Knights of Pythias hall.
The main feature of the business
meeting will be the discussion of the
group nnrfw subject In an ef
fort to decide If the Ktlverton 4 -L's
will carry on their group Insurance
ss they have- been doing or adopt
other methods for protective Insur
ance. Visiting Insurance men will
include "4-L Smithy- and Chts
holm. both of Portland, who will aid
in the decision of the local 4-L'a.
These men are field organizers for
the order.

ASSUME LIABILITY
Sllverton The owners of tLe
large car that shoved the Drake car
into the ditch. Sunday, about one
half mile toward Sllverton on the
Woodburn-Sllverton highway, have
assumed the blame for the acci
dent and will stand for the damage
done the Sllverton automobile, ac
cording to a report from Knute
Bartness, now living In Idaho, and
a passenger of the car that caused
the trouble.
Bartness was In Sllverton Sunday
to visit a brother who lives hare
snd he and his companion s ere on
their way to Portland when the ac
eldent occulted. Mtand Mrs. June
Drake and Drake's aunt, Mrs. Del
la Smitih were In the Drake car,

speed when the large car swerved
around them and turned into the
right of the road too soon, strik
ing the hub cap of the front wheel
sending the car into the ditch.
The driver then quickened his
speed and failed to make a square
corner about 100 feet ahead, and
turned over, pinning the two oc
cupants In the mud and water un
der the car. Bartness escaped In
jury, but his companion was taken
to the hospital with severe face and
scalp wounds, which did not prove
serious. The car bore a Washington
license.

O. Mcintosh were guests of St.
Mary's chapter O. E. & In Corvallis
on Tuesday evening at a banquet
honoring the Worthy Grand Matron
of Oregon on her official visit to
that chapter. Several other mem
bers from Adah Chapter attended
the meeting of St. Mary's chapter
in the Masonic Temple. Degrees
of the order were conferred upon
Mrs. Peterson a sister of the worthy
patron of Adah chapter, P. M.

Btayton Achievement day for the
local 4-H club members was ob
served Tuesday. The exhibitions
were held In the grade school build
ing, three clubs having their work
on display throughout the afternoon.
Awards were as follows: First year
cooking, exhibit consisting of four
cookies, Roland Dalley, first; Frank
Tome, first; Clarice Tobie and Gor
don Kendricks. second; Emma Jans
Pendleton and Madltn Adams, third.
Second year cooking, exhibit con
sisting of one sponge cake. Fred
Davenport, first; Luctle Calbreath,
second; and Hortense Stayton,
third; First year serving, exhibit
consisting of one article of wearing
apparel and several small articles,
Lucille Calbreath, first; Thelma
Wright, second: and Francell Car
ter, third. Judges mere Mrs. Mar
garet Norby. Miss Helen Patten and
Theo. J. Norby. Several mothers
and those interested in club work
were present, and all pupils in four
upper grades with their teacheds.
Refreshments were enjoyed at the
close of the Judging. Forty seven
members are registered in the three
clubs this year, all of them com
pleting their work 100 per cent.

PROGRAM PRESENTED
Amity A "mystery mother's"
program and banquet was presented
In the parlors of the Amity Meth
odist church Tuesday evening at
6:30 o'clock by the members of the
Standard Bearer society of the
church, under the direction of their
advisor, Mrs. F. L. Cannell. Each
girl chose a friend for a mother,
whose Identity was kept a secret
until the night of the banquet, when
each girl's own mother was Invited
as a guest. The president, Miss
Hcedra Massey, had charge of the
program.

,of Woodcraft were formally instal
led Wednesday evening by a team of
17 girls from Portland with Grand
Physician Dr. Scott In the presence
of over 100 Neighbors and visitors
from adjoining loans.
The meeting began with a covered
dish supper In tils banquet room
which had been effectively deco
rated for the occasion. Guardian
Neighbor Airs. Del Plaster opened
the business session and then turn
ed the meeting over to Dr. Scott
who conducted the installation of

BUverton The national program
of the Immanuel Lutheran group to
be held at the church, Tuesday will
be preceded by a dinner at I o'clock
in the evening, featuring a Scan
dinavian menu. The principal
speaker will be Rev. J. D. Runsvold
of the Bethlehem Lutheran con
gregation of Portland, who will talk
on his recent tour of Norway. This
lecture will be In the English lan
guage. The Imrnarroel congregation Is
endeavoring to get the Monitor
Orieg chorus directed by Dr. A. E.
F. 8chlerbaum of Mt. Angel as an
additional attraction but no definite
arrangement has yet been made for
their appearance. Other numbers
on the program will be selections by
