FRIDAY, MARCH 11, 1932 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL. SALEM. OREGON 21 SHORT BLOUSE SWEATERS IN LACEY WEAVES We're headed tor a season of In formality, practicality and simplic ity of style naturally sweaters are good. They are also smart, new looking, and Individual In their 1933 versions. They range all the way from definite sport types in angoras and ribbed simulated nand-knits, to open-work and lacey crochet effects that are as dressy as a blouse. Hie new high waistcd skirts hare Influenced sweater styles In many ways. For one thing, they're defi nitely shorter. Often the hlgh-watst-ed effect is emphasized by carrying a dark color through the closely fit ting rib section with the top in a lighter contrasting color. And since this tight fit through the center of the body Is smartest If the top fits loosely, many a new sweater Is roomy about the shoulders or adopts a cowl neckline of puffed sleeves to achieve that casual, wide-shouldered look. Materials are responsible for much of the Interest In new sweaters. The most up-to-the-minute Is pure Irish linen thread almost like a heavy sewing thread used for very simple and very smart hand-knitted white sweater blouses. The high neckline, so general throughout the mode, has Invaded sweater realms too. One type Is a high, purled neck that stops short at the base of the throat. If this seems too severe, a scarf can be add ed for a softening line. Another style features a childish turn-down round collar with tiny silver buttons proceeding from the top all the way down the throat. RIBBED GOODS IN HIGH FAVOR Paris (IP) It was the rib, long ago, that started things, and It Is a rib today though we admit, a diflerent kind of a rib that is starting things anew in the business of being fash ionable. Ribbon is so definitely a present style note that when materials are not ridgey, surface tucks that stand up and are sometimes stuffed with padding, are taken on the machine to enrich the garment and give it a corduroy effect. Cotton corduroy without the effect of velvet, but smooth lil'.e Bedford cord. Is prophesied as a fabric for the revived little midsummer coat shorter and tighter than last years. and all white. Even chiffon takes unto itself an ever increasing scries of ribs and ' while still as light as a flippant thought, it has the appearance of being a vcrv weighty matter, "SPlAHAST DRESSES NEW Paris. (IP) "Speakeasy" dresses are on the up and up here, which proves that Parisian couturiers are very altruistic. They don't need speakeasy dresses because there are no speakeasies in France. The same popular little frocks for this side of the Atlantic are called "Cocktail Frock" right out. Just like thatl Lucile Paray has made an evening ensemble, consisting of a two piece dress made of black velveteen for the skirt and a blouse of white crepe embroidered in crystals. With it is to be worn a Paray short dolman cape of b'.ack velveteen trimmed with ermine. Green and white striped taffeta Is a Mastey Rouff note for spring. She Is still using puffed sleeves and a little ruffled arrangement about the lower portion of the hips that is charming because it Is entirely free from any "period" influence. The 'skirt flowing out from these ruffles falls In crisp folds and stops at least three Inches above the ankles. STRIPES TAKE BOW IN SPRING CHESSES dauim (i pi wp are all In for a good spring stripping, and as a re sult there will be a good deal ol 'tingling with excltmcnt." "But,' heavens: I can't wear stripes!" we hear a tall thin woman exclaim. And then she brike down and ad mitted she never even had thought about that. All her llle she had been broueht up in "You can't wear stripes, you're too thin." never stop ping to consider that a good stripe can run sideways as well as up and down. Greater Variety In Designs Is Offered With Spring Season When the Boys' Apparel Buyers' association finished Its meeting early this year the concensus of opinion favored the development of more pronounced patterns in boys' clothes. In accordance with this idea the manufacturers have pro duced such clothes from fabrics LILAC, SILVER EVENING GOWN Paris (IP) We are going to make you green with envy now by telling you about a lace evening dress in lavender and silver with embroid ered applications of velvet In deep violet! Even the suggestion of green In the envy goes well In the above combination, tor it fits Into the picture as the foliage of lilacs and lilies and violets. The foundation ot the lace, which is a net with a very fine drawn work effect, is of silver. Small leaf-shaped patterns are also of lace but in the lavender shado. As If showered gently over the shoul ders and the bottom of the skirt from just below the kneos to the floor the appliqued pattern of vio let velvet is done in a flowery fig urelilacs, lilies and violets. While glenurquhart plaids havei been staging a gradual comeback with the collegian the use of such patterns In boys' clothes has been slow in developing. For youngsters of six to fourteen years the combination of sweater o-rt tnirker. introduced several years ago, is favored by a great many youngsters who have shown a distaste for vests.
