FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1931 EXCLUSIVE NEWS DISPATCHES WILLAMETTE VALLEY NEWS n SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT PAGE THREE CHURCH WOMEN AT JEFFERSON HOLD PROGRAM Jefferson The Woman's Foreign Missionary society of the Methodist church met at the home of Mrs. C. M. Smith on First street Wednes day afternoon. Mrs. B. 8. Thurston led the devo tlonals, the topic being "Through Temple Doors to the Sanctuary of Nature." During the devotional period Mrs. Blanche Llbby read, "He that Keepeth Thee." Mrs. J. O. Fontaine had charge of the ritualistic exercises for the opening of the mite boxes. Miss Addle Libby gave a reading entitl ed "A Double Zero Charge" and Mrs. Earl Lynes read an interesting article on "An Eighteen Day Ex pansion Diet." The mystery box was conducted by Mrs. George C. Mason. At the close of the program a so cial hour was enjoyed and refresh ments were served by the hostess assisted by her daughter, Miss Jean Smith. Members present included Miss Addle Llbby, Mrs. Earl Phelps, Mrs. George C. Mason, Mrs. R. C. Thom as, Mrs. Earl Lynes, Mrs. B. C. Thurston, Mrs. J. O. Fontaine and the hostess, Mrs. C. M. Smith. Guests for the afternoon were Mrs. D. W. Cummins, Mrs. Elmer Beach, Mrs. Evalyn Wall and Miss Jean Smith. WESTENHOUSE CLAN GATHERS AT BRIDGE Liberty The Westenhouse fam ily held Its annual reunion at Green's bridge. A basket dinner was served at noon and the after noon was spent visiting and play ing games. Several members were unable to be present owing to work and illness. Those present were Hugh West enhouse, Mr. and Mrs. Ed West enhouse, Mrs. Uriah Neiderhelser and sons, Delvia and Frank; Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Westenhouse and children, Wilms, Vincent and Row ena, all of Salem; Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Westenhouse, Mr. and Mrs. Sid ney stringer and children, Ra mona and Marilyn, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Westenhouse and children. Joyce Phyllis and Carmen, Mr. and Mrs. Ardie Westenhouse all of Scio, Mr. and Mrs. Delias of Lyons and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Westen house of Junction City. VISITING MOLALLA FRIENDS Molalla Miss Lura Jarmon of As tascadero, Calif., is spending the week at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. George J. Case and Mr. and Mrs. Harold F. Ridings. Miss Jarmon taught In the Molalla union high school here for three years and had charge of the home economics de partment. During that time Mrs. Ridings was also teaching and they both made their home with Mrs. Case. Miss Jarmon had charge of the home economics department at Astascadero last year and will re turn there this fall to teach. OLD RESIDENT STRICKEN Jefferson Miss Esther Roland suffered an attack of dizziness and fainted while she was conversing with E. L. Barnes near her home in Jefferson TueAday. Barnes assisted her home and she Is reported to be entirely recovered. Miss Roland Is one of the oldest residents in Jeffer son, being well along In the 806. GVESTS F1CHER HOME Mt. Angel Rev. Brewer re moved the tonsils from Mi. Melford Allen of Springfield and Miss Mary Kirsch at the Stayton hospital Mon day. Carnival Success Gervais The annual carnival given by the members of Sacred Heart parish was very well attend ed. A chicken supper was served from 6 to 9 o'clock and concessions and Ice cream booths were station ed near the hall with a large crowd attending the dance at the close of the evening. EVERHARTS ENTERTAINED Aurora Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Evcrhart and son of San Fran cisco, Calif., are visiting friends and relatives In Aurora this week. They also took a trip up the Col umbia highway and Tuesday evening were dinner guests of Mrs. Rupert Anderson In Oswego. Ever hart Is one of the departmental managers of the White House, exclusive department store In San Francisco. MILL MAN POISONED McKee Recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. R, Shan er were Miss Sarah Bliven and nephew Edmund of Salem, and Mrs. Joseph Richardson of St. Helens. Mrs. Richardson was call ed home due to the serious Illness of her husband, who was poisoned by chlorine gas at the mil). He Is one of the foremen of the mill. Molalla The Molalla grange No. 310 met Monday evening and fol lowing a short business meeting, various contests were Jieia. win ners in these contests were Gilbert Jackson, Mrs. 3. L. Tubbs and Mrs. Lew Wallace. Kirks Variety store, J. E. Rlddells and Frank Dlcken and company donated suitable prizes for the occasion. The next meeting of the grange will be Sep tember 6 when they will hold their annual picnic at the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dlcken at Shady Dell on the Molalla river. Class Holds Picnic Sheridan The Bible class of the Methodist Sunday school of which H. G. Funk Is the teacher, brought well-filled baskets with them Sun day morning and at the close of the morning services went to the city park and held a picnic dinner. There were 38 present. Funk has been the teacher of this class for about six years. IDAHO PEOPLE VISIT Liberty Mr, and Mrs. Arah Durham and children of Wciser, Idaho, have been guests at the Robert Foster home, Mrs. Durham and Mrs. Foster being sisters. While here the two families made a trip to Yachats, returning home Tuesday. The Durhams have left for Forest Grove, their former home and from there will visit in Portland. MOUNTAIN ROAD POOR Jefferson Mr. and Mrs. D. M Burnett returned recently from a motor trip to Gilliam county, in eastern Oregon, to look alter prop erty Interests and also to visit rel atives. They went by way of the Co lumbia river highway, returning over the Santlam pass and home by way of Lebanon. They report portions of the road m the vicinity of Fl6h lake narrow and dangerous. Jefferson Mrs. Francis Wester of Terrebonne, Ore., Is spending week at the country home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Miller. She wll also visit her daughter In Albany before returning home. I. ."IfsRICHEST S STRONGEST BEST' m jBEyi UOLALLA GRANGERS PLAN ANNUAL PICNIC LEAGUE RALLY TO BE SUNDAY Molalla The Epworth League rallv of the sub-district of the Portland district Including Willam ette, Cams, Canby, Clackamas and Molalla will be held Sunday In the cltv park at Molalla. Besides the districts mentioned there will be Portland district officers present. Miss Opal Foglesong of Molalla Is president of the sub-district of the Portland district. There will be a business meeting at 3 o'clock followed by an address by Roy Olaas, who la superinten dent of schools of Oregon City. He will use as his subject, "Christian ity on Fire." A poUuck dinner will be served at S o'clock and the eve ning services will be in charge of the Canby Epworth League. Dr. C L Andrews of Canby who Is direc tor of religious education of the Oregon conference will give an ad dress In the evening. FALL FLOWER SHOW DISCUSSED BY CLUB Woodburn An Interesting meet ing of the Woodbura Garden club was held at the home of the presi dent, Mrs. Ida Parr Tuesday eve ning. Plans were discussed for the fall flower show, which will be held the last of September or the first of October. J. J. Hall was appoint ed general chairman of this affair. It was also decided to hold a shrub sale In the early fall. The exterm ination of earwigs was brought up for discussion. Meetings of the club will be held at homes of the mem bers during the rest of the year unless a special session Is called. Mis. Mathews had not seen her brother for seven years. She could hardly believe It was her brother, Charles, as he, a smooth. shaved man, was wearing a long beard. It was against the city ordinance for any one to shave until after the pioneer celebration which was to be held at that place. " LESLEYS ARE HOME Stayton Mr. and Mrs, Frank Lesley and son Wilbur have return ed from a week's stay In the Slit- coos country. This was Lesley's first trip at that fishing resort and were very fortunate In the catch. Molalla Arthur Nerbas who has been spending the summer with his grandparents, Mr. ana Mrs. I. n. Farr and working In the meat mar ket has returned to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Nerbas of Roseburg. Past Noble Grand ' Picnic, Sheridan Sheridan The Past Noble Grand club of Sheridan Rebekah lodge, ac companied by the husbands and families, held picnic at the coun try home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Beth, southwest of town. GERVAIS SOCIAL IS SET FRIDAY NIGHT Oervals The regular monthly meeting of the Ladles' Missionary society was held at the home of Mrs. R. 8. Marshal Wednesday al ternoon with Mrs. William AUsup assisting her. A short business ses kn was followed by completing the arrangements made for an Ice cream social Friday evening. Wood Cutters Called West Balem The board of stew ards of Ford Memorial church have purchased the season's wood and have it ready for stacking In the basement. They will be glad to have the assistance of the men who will help on Saturday evening at 8 o'clock. REVIVALISTS HOSTS FOR YOUNGER CROWD Molalla Rev. W. Charles Huddle- ston who, with his wife and Miss Adlra Bergan are holding evangel istic meetings In the Lyric theater building, made Tuesday night spe cial night for the young people of the community. Following tne regu lar services the young people went to the Methodist Episcopal church for a social hour. Games were play ed and refreshments served to Laura and Earl Ramsay, Marilyn Douglas, Henry, Harold and Norman Wolfer, Laurence Bernard, Laverne Darn, Walter Laughlln, Freda Buroker, Wendall Schutt, John Howard, Cleo, Ruba and Opal Foglesong. WARD VISITING Jefferson Mrs. Marlon Ward of Centralla, Wash., Is visiting rela tives and friends In Jefferson. Mrs. Ward will be remembered aa Mar ion Slmms who with her mother, Mrs. Hattle Slmms resided here a few years ago. MISSIONARY SOCIETY LEARNS ABOUT CHINA Woodburn Mrs. C. R. Duncan entertained the missionary society of the Presbyterian church at her home on Fifth street Wednesday af ternoon. The opening devotions were conducted by Mrs. Nellie Muir and the program was In charge of Mrs. Sidney Foster. The subject of the afternoon's study was "China." Ar ticles of interest were given by Mrs. H. F. Orr and Mrs. Stanley Adams. "A Business Man's View of Mis sions," was one of the articles pre sented. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Duncan, assisted by Mrs. E. J. Allen and Mr. M. J. Miller. Jefferson Mrs. O. F. Lei rung Jr., and daughter Florence, accompan ied by Rev. and Mrs. G. F. Leining are spending several days at the beach at Newport. FIRE FROM SAWDUST PILE IS AUOXB Molalla Fir which spread baa a small sawdust pile which J. H. Bauah was burning near his saew market Wednesday raged for an hour back of the city hall when) the fire truck la kept. The fire burned some old build ings that were grown over with Evergreen blackberry vinea. Tb wind was from the north and tb L O. O. F. hall which was but a ttw yards away was endangered. Th Molalla volunteer fire department extinguished the blaze. Silverton Birthday' Party Fine Affair Mrs. Harry Bentson of North First street entertained with a party Wed nesday evening In honor of th birthdays of little Colleen Bowen and Frank Bowen. About 30 guests attended. Lou Bowen of Monteaanov Wash., who attends the Bowen clan reunion every year, showed several years' reels of movies of the differ ent reunions. Refreshments were served by th hostess, assisted by her sister, Mrs. John Anderson, Silverton Mrs. J. A. McCannel and her sister are spending the week at Ocean Lake. Dr. McCannel, who took them over last Sunday, expects to go after them next Sunday.
