UNCLE JIMMY' HOLDS 92ND BIRTHDAY DATE Silverton "Uncle Jimmy" Mauld ing. who has been confined In tlie Deaconess hospital for some time, has just passed his 82nd birthday anniversary. "Uncle Jimmy," who was bcrn In Iowa, has spent most of his time In Oregon and many years in ana near Silverton where he has been a familiar and a pleasant figure for many years. ,Hls son Charlie and family, his grandson Roy. and his nieces, Sadie Barkhurst and Rhoda Barkhurst, motored to Salem to be with him on the event of his birthday and found him as usual, happy and contented and asking about his many Silver- ton friends. EXPERT RAIDERS ON VISIT NEAR HUBBARD . Hubbard Some expert chicken Stealing has been going on In the country district northeast of Hub bard. E. U. Anderson reports the loss of 40 choice Rhode Island Reds. Anderson said that a flash light or lantern must have been uacd as the stolen birds were selected from the roosting flock, no old birds be ing taken. The chicken houses are right on the farm yard where a dog guards the entrance. The dog bark ing disturbed the farmer but the loss was not discovered until the next day. Tuesday evening, to assist In commemorating the St. Patrick event which happen to fall on their regular meeting night. Pet Pigeon Proves Popular on Jaunts Qulnaby Much Interest is being shown in the pet pigeon owned by Mrs. Chester Pugh who is 111 In San Francisco, and who left the pigeon with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pugh at Clear Lake until she recovers. Mrs. Pugh picked up the bird where It had fallen from a high nest near her home at Shrevesiwrt, La., and from that time until recently has never been separated from it. It ac companied the Pughs from Louisi ana when they came by motor from that place, laying three eggs route, and sitting upon them. Later it travclrd bark to the south and a second time returned to Oregon with them, thus making three trips across the country.. Koppes Are Hosts Mt. Molalla Aid Has Meeting at Church Molalla The Ladles' Aid of the Methodist Episcopal church met in the basement of the church Wed nesday afternoon. The time was spent sewing and working on a quilt. It was decided to give a food sale Saturday In the bank building. A committee consisting of Mrs. Peter Ficken, Mrs. Peter Faurle and Mrs. H. steininger was ap pointed. I WOMEN OBSERVE FOUNDERS' DAY Jefferson "Founders' day" of the woman's foreign missionary society of the Methodist church was ob served at the home of Mrs. George C. Mason Wednesday afternoon. The president of the society, Miss Addle Libby, had charge of the business meeting and also led the devotionals. Mrs. D. George Cole was program leader, the topic of which was women In Social and welfare Work". This concerned the work of women In the foreign mission fields. principally native women, who have been trained as missionaries. Readings on the subject were given by Mrs. J. O. Fontaine and Mrs. George C. Mason. Mrs. J. G. Fon taine led the Founders' day litany ana nymn, responses being made by the members. At the tea hour re freshments were served by the hostess, assisted by Miss Laura Mason. Members present were Miss Ad- die Llbby, Mrs. C. M. Smith, Mrs. J. G. Fontaine, Mrs. D. SHERIDAN ALTAR CLU GIVEN TWO AFFAIRS RODENT CONTROL MOVE LAUNCHED; FARMERS SUFFER Dallas Farmers of the Bethel Heights district have found that grey squirrels make serious Inroads on their walnuts and other crops. A petition signed by property .own ers of that district was received In the county agent's office the past week urging the strictest enforce ment of the compulsory poisoning law this year. Bethel Heights Is a continuation of the Eola hills north and east of the Bethel schoolhouse. The petition was signed by property owners hold ing 1491 acres in that area. They re port that their trouble is largely with non-resident owners who have failed to take any steps to control the squirrels on their property. L. D. Waring has been appointed committeeman for that district and J. R. Beck in his capacity as rodent control suj)ervisor states that these men will be given every support in the control of this pestiferous rod ent. He has attended the Oenterriew school here and la ter was graduated from tlx Silver ton high school. J Sheridan Mrs. Joe Hintzen and her daughter, Mrs. Ed Spring were joint hostesses to the Altar society of the church of the Good Shep herd at the Ed Spring home. The Altar society meets twice each month, once for business and once for a social afternoon and this was the regular social meeting. Some of the women spent the time, under the direction of Father L. J. Dorouin, cutting out church vestment preparatory to making them for use in the altar service of the church. Others worked on a quilt for the annual church bazaar. Mrs. Spring and her mother served a one course lunch to their guests at tlie close of the afternoon. The party was continued In the evening at the parish house, where Kcv. Dorouin was host at a at. Patrick's party. Those present were Mrs. Walter Grace, Mrs. Floyd Hamstrcet, Mrs. Margaret Hlnten, Miss Martha Hintzcn. Mrs. Joe Gross, Mrs. Matt Kurt, Mrs. Matt Kranthoefer. Sheridan Sheridan and Willa- mina bankers were hosts to the Yamhill County Bankers' associa tion In the banquet hall of the Ma' sonic temple. All banks of Yam hill county were well represented. Over 50 were guests for the din- ner served by the women of the Civic Improvement club. Music during tlie banquet was furnished by Smith's orchestra. Tandy was well attended and on the average, good prices were re ceived. Allen was the scene of a St. Patrick's party Tuesday eve ning when the Saturday Night club entertained with 10 tables of "500" for a number of friends. Eight prizes were awarded. The guest prizes went to Mrs. F. R. Olin for high score and W. H. Pancoast; consolation prizes to Sylvia Oooch and C, M. Cline. Club prizes were given to Mrs. E. C. Gordon and A. D. Grade declamatory contest, divi sions 2 and 4, comprising the third and fourth grades and the seventh and ctgth grades at West Salem In the Community hall on May 19 at B p. m. On May 11 and 15 eighth grade examinations will be carried on throughout the county The second half of the grade de clamatory contest composed of grades one and three and five and six will be held In tlie Dallas high school May is at 8 p. m. The high school declamatory contest in the dramatic and humor ous divisions Is scheduled for Falls City May 21 at 8 p. m. The county track and field meet will take place at the Monmouth Normal school May 23 at 1 p. m. On the evening of May 23 at the Normal school the extemporaneous and oratorical divisions in the high school declamatory contests are to take place. In the course of the evening medals won at the field meet will be presented. Concluding the list of activities for the school year among the grade schools Is their track and field meet set for May 16 at Mon mouth Normal. HIGH POWER LINES WORRY TO FIREMEN BADLY BURNED Mill City Tony Silbernagel was Badly burned by the explosion of gasoline Thursday noon. He picked up a can which he thought was ker osene to rebuild a fire, but It was gasoline Instead of kerosene and there were some coals left which caused an explosion and lib clothes caught on fire. Several men nearby put out the fire as quickly as passible, but his woolen clothes made the burn more serious. H. H. WACONDA CLUB ANNUAL BAZAAR PLANS SUBJECT VVGODBURN WGTU IS GUEST AT HAWLEYS Molalla The Molalla volunteer fire department held a meeting in the city hall this week and decided that at a comin? meeting a repre sentative from the Pacific Northwest Power company will be asked to talk on the bla voltage lines in Mo lalla, and instruct the firemen as to where they are, 50 in case of fire the water will not be used on the buildings where so many of these wires are Installed. The electric depot Is one of the places surrounded with high voltage wires that would cause fatalities If water were used on it, In case of fire. During the time that' Lawrence Masterton was fire chief the study of these lines In Molalla was taken up, but only four members of the department at present, were In the department at that time. Bishop Will Speak At Woodburn Church Woodburn Bishop Walter T. Sumner of Portland, assisted by Rev. A report was given on absent members who are ill and greetings were read from Mrs. A. L. Lamb, the club secretary, who has been In Medford for the past month. Mrs. Henry C. Stafford took charge of the secretary's work, due to the ab sence of the assistant secretary, Mrs. Allyn Nusom. Plans for the annual bazaar were discussed and layed aside for the coming year. A program and sup per will be held this year Instead of the bazaar. All articles made will be held over for one year. Mrs. Cora Spurlock and Mrs. Oeorge Brown were special guests for the day. Angel The closing services ot a nine day public noveiia to St. Joseph was solemnized by solemn benediction in the St. Benedict ab bey church, Thursday evening. Tlie novena services with bene diction were held every evening since March 11th In the Abbey church. Tlie seminarians sang at tlie services, with special singing at the closing day. This was the second annual public novena held, and a large number were present. j POPPY SALE TO BE HELD AGAIN Silverton At the meeting of the Auxiliary of the American Legion this week Mrs. Harry Wilson was made chairman of the poppy sale committee, this sale to be held on Memorial day when it Is hoped by the auxiliary ladles that everyone of the 1500 popples sent to them will be sold. Mrs. Dell Barber was appointed auxiliary delegate to the cemetery meetings. Mrs. Jack Ballantyne. president of the Marlon county health unit, told of the clinics regularly held at the local health center and also stated that she may need some of tlie aux iliary ladles to help her at various times. Soma children's garments which had been made by the local auxi liary members were sent to the gen eral child welfare committee In Portland where they may be pro cured for needy veterans' children. BROWN IN HOSPITAL Gervais Samuel Esson Brown oldest son of Senator and Mrs. 8. H. Brown was operated on for ap pendicitis at the Oregon City hos pital Tuesday and Is recovering nicely. ' "!
