As most of his friends know, he was enthusiastically interested In the historical background of the Ore gon country, particularly of east ern Oregon. More than that, he was Intensely interested In the origin and the history of geographic names In eastern Oregon. The writer or this letter has discussed with Nick Sinnott many times the histories of eastern Oregon place names, and he knows Mr. Sinnott had an in herent objection to changing the historical names of that part of the state that he so ably repre sented In congress. Mr. Sinnott was a French scholar and he was In terested in the history of the place names of French origin. It seems to be particularly Inappropriate to change the name or Malheur river and substitute therefore Mr, Sln- nott's own name. "The name Malheur does not be long entirely to what is now Mal heur county. This fine river Hows In Harney, Orent and Baker coun tics as well. If the people of Mai heur county wish to change the name of their county to Sinnott, mat is one thing, but there is con sideraule belief that the name of the river ought to be left alone Malheur river has had its name for more than a century. The origin ot Its name is wrapped up In the historical background of eastern Oregon, and if this historical back' ground Is thrust aside, there are plenty of good reasons why many other old names In the state should be similarly eliminated, but It is a .safe bet that if Kick Sinnott were here today he would not lend aid sucn a movement. He would con sider it a sacrilege, and would be one of Us principal opponents. "As a matter of fact, there are a lot of changes that could be made. Some of them would be highly In tercsttng. We still have a good many counties with Indian and other historical names. Lots of fun can be had by speculating what could be done In some of these cases. Let us, for instance, consider chang ing the name of Clackamas and christen the river for Chris Schubel? Tillamook county Is an old Indian name.
