government press bureau announced
Tuesday night that approximately
100 men perished In the disaster
which occurred Tuesday in the An
na coal mine at Alsdorf.
Bodies recovered numbered 35 at
the time the statement was issued.
At that hour there were approxi
mately 60 dead underground and 76
Injured In a hospital.
The deaths of four of these Tues
day afternoon brought the total to
100.
The victims were burled in the
wreckage spread by the blast
through two levels 1200 and 1500
feet below the surface. Among the
victims were two office workers kill
ed when buildings above ground collapsed.
The Prussian trade ministry dis
pelled earlier reports of more serious
losses with the explanation that
hen the workers who escaped fled
from the mine they dashed straight
for their homes In their bewilder
ment without punching the time
clock.
The management stated that res
cue progress would be alow because
the main entrance to the mine had
been made Impassable by the ex
plosion and that the victims must
be carried to shafts of the Maria
mine, several miles away by an un
derground route.
The men still entombed were m
the lowest seam of the mine pit
and there was danger or water en
tering. The work of getting to the
men was proceeding slowly because
debris and gas. Many miners
were believed buried among the
debris and it was feared they were
dead.
The total casualties were still
only a matter of estimate. The of
ficial figures were lower than the
estimate of the Alsdorf police, but
doctor at the scene said tney
would mount. Many of the injured
were suffering from burns and gas
poisoning. Authorities were try Ing
to obtain an Idea ot the number
of men who escaped by sending out
radio appeal for men who were
working Tuesday morning to report.
Heart rending scenes occurred at
the pit bead, where the weeping
of women relatives mingled with
cries from the Injured. Thousands
of people and hundreds of auto
mobiles arrived at the scene. Fort
unately, medical aid and hospltAj
accommodations were plentiful.
