"Without or with offense to friends or foes I sketch your world exactly' a it goes." Byron Campaign Amenities In his speech before the Kiwanis club. Julius Meier, the millionaire merchant prince and chain banker who has sud denly become champion of the people, declared that the editor ol the Capital Journal along with two other editors was a subsidized champion of the power trust and its edi torials written by one whose brains had been removed 18 years ago which is probably as near to wit as Mr. Meier is capable of scintillating. Now the columns of the Capital Journal carry their own refutation of Mr. Meier's subsidy slander. The other charge may be true. But despite it, perhaps because of it, during the 25 years tho editor has been publishing news papers in Oregon, there cannot be cited a single utterance of his to substantiate the subsidy accusation, but many to refute it. The editor's opposition to the menace of the power interests is a matter of record for a quarter of a cen tury, whereas Mr. Meier's record is only six weeks old. Such an attack upon its honesty, integrity and sincerity, is a serious one to bring against any newspaper, but because an unmitigated falsehood always finds willing believers it receives unmerited attention. The Meier power subsidy canard is rehashed from similar charges made by the late George Joseph in pursuance of his doctrine that the right of free speech meant the right of character assassination. The Capital Journal at the time dubbed Mr. Joseph an unmiti gated liar and now pays the same compliment to Mr. Meier. To substantiate his charges, Mr. Joseph cited the fact that the Capital Journal printed display advertising in 1926, along with every other newspaper in Oregon opposing the Housewives power bill, paid for by the power companies. But the advertising did not influence the editorial policy of the Capital Journal, any more than printing the political advertising of Mr. Joseph or that of the Water Company in the recent primary campaign did. All sides in every elec tion are entitled to present their arguments to the people In the advertising columns of newspapers and it is part of the functions of the press to print them. Incidentally it may be remembered that it was in this same campaign of 1926 that the Capital Journal asked an investigation by the Senate Committee of rumors that the power interests were financing the campaign of Senator Steiwcr as they had that of other senatorial candidates in the east. The only investigation that followed was the ac ceptance of the denials of power officials, who swore they never contributed anything to any political campaign and thus white-washed themselves. - Would a subsidized news paper hurl such a bomb into the ranks of the power inter ests? Mr. Meier probably gets his idea of a subsidized press from his experiences with metropolitan newspapers, for he ruthlessly uses his power as the largest advertiser in the community to club city papers and threaten them with loss of business to influence their policies. In some instances he has punished them by loss of lineage and in other instanc es lured them with greater patronage. Their consequent servility and lick-spittling, makes the independence oi.the country press incomprehensible to Mr. Meier and he p -obably imagines that if he is not subsidizing the latter, some one else must be. Mr. Meier also characterized the three small newspa pers he mentioned as his "worst enemies" who are "spiting themselves with their lack of understanding of the import ance of the battle being waged against the power monopoly." Now the Capital Journal has no enmity for Mr. Meier, in fact it has a high regard for him as a bright spot in what would otherwise be a dull campaign and it derives a great deal of pleasure in debunking his candidacy and puncturing his iridescent bubbles of sham. On the power issue Mr. Meier's ignorance Is collosal and he has yet to set forth a single constructive idea to remedy conditions. There is nothing that he advocates that cannot be accomplished under existing laws. His candidacy is sponsored in the background, by a group of the most pred atory and mercenary politicians the state has developed. His personal financial interests as a capitalist are interwoven ...:i, unA 4 ln vnntrnntA.4. On a me&nintrless Dlat- ttllli muse ui fciiw " . r. The Iower interests far from opposing him, regard his candidacy with calm complacency if not inward satisfaction, realizing there is nothing to fear and that the people are being buncoed again. FOR WOMEN IN GERMANY RISES Berlin (IP) The number of suicides in Germany remained about as high In 1928 as it was in 1927, numbering about 10.000, but women's suicides Increased as compared to men's the latest official statistics revealed. This,' tendency has been observed for several years. In 1926, for In- I stance, 13.3 women out of every 100.000 committed suicide, their rate j rising to 14.S two years after. Dur ing the same period, the number of male suicides dropped from 39 to 36.4 out of every 100,000. The number of suicides does not vary widely from year to year. Nev ertheless, periods of declining trade show an increasing suicide rate. Thus 1926, a year marked by a se vere economic crisis, revealed the highest suicide rate after the war 26.2 per 100,000 Inhabitants. Official statistics of the year 1929 have not yet been completed, but It Is be lieved that the unfavorable business situation during that year resulted The Figure of Fashion Be Fitted to a fr livery woman wants to follow the Fashion and Fashion today, de pends on the silhou ette. Quality Merchandise -Popular Prices ASCRIBE LOSS IN REVENUE TO LESSJRINKING Berlin, HV-Through the growing abstinence of Germans from hard liquor, the government 1s facing a material loss of revenue from Its state alcohol monopoly. This year's profits were estimated at $90,000,000, an Increase of 23 per cent over the previous year. But re turns thus far Indicate that there will be a decline of around 40 per cent m ims important item. Sales of alcohol for industrial purposes snow a slight Increase and the use of alcohol In motor fuels la about the same level. The dif ference, therefore, lies in the smal. ler consumption of schnaps and cor dials. Two main cures are being con sidered. One Is to increase the per centage of alcohol In motor fuels. It row stands at 25 to 75 per cent berar-L The other remedy proposed Is an Increase in the price of dis tilled alcohol. Business circles, how ever, say this will result in trim ming the dog from the tuu. as the present augmented price of $150 a hectolitre led to a reduction of one- ftfth In the sonsumption of cor dials in 1928. to add to the woes of the mo nopoly managers, Is the fact that they held over 400,000 hectotUtres of alcohol from last year'a supply wmie this year an exceptional po tato harvest has kept the country's 32.600 distilleries going at augment ed speed.
