Low. city street com. minloner, la playing no favorite, in a resolution that will go before the city council Monday night de claring as nuisances th, Tacant lots of several hundred citlseni or Sa lem. Included In the list. It is said, are properties owned by some of the most prominent business and professional men of the city. The street commissioner is pro ceeding under an ordinance paaaed at the last meeting of the city council. This makes the offense of siloa-ing weeds and grass to grow without restraint a misdemeanor punishable by fine or Imprison ment or both. Though not mentioned tn the or dinance it Is understood that the declaring as a nuisance any lot that has become an entanglement of weeds and grass Is based on three things. These are the fire hazard. the fact that weed seeds blow upon and befour neighboring property and the unsightly appearance it gives the residential districts of the city. The Monday night session of the council prmoises to be barren of matters of great Importance with the exception of the weed resolu tion and the Trade street vacation matter. It ts understood a pro test against the vacation of Trade will be presented in behalf of number of citiiens who think It Is better for the welfare of the city to keep the street open rather than allow the Oregon Pulp as paper company to use It as a location for an addition to the paper mill. Alderman S. A. Hughes, chairman of the street committee, will rec ommend that the city advertise again for bids on a molting pot for the street department, mis wiu be based on the fact that only one bid was reoelved at the last meet ing and that bids had not been advertised for prior to the meeting. KAY EXPECTS EAST OREGON TO BACKHIfV, (Continued from page 1) dlcton recently when nine of the committee members from counties cast of the mountains met and signed an agreement to not be come Individually pledged to any candidate prior to the Portland meeting. Reports current In Port land say that 1 Eastern Oregon committeemen have not signed this round-robin agreement. There Is nothing In the agree ment Indicating favor for any one candidate, or that, its signers are binding themselves to vote as a unit. But the very existance of the agreement has given rise to reports that the members from the east- em part of the state are going to vote as a bloc In an effort to force the nomination of a candidate from their section. Signers of tin agreement, however, have mststed that they are not pledged to any such sectionalism, and that they will Individually support any can didate Dossessed of the qualifies- Uong for a governor of the whole state.. - It Is strongly indicated and not denied that they are going to in sist upon a square deal for East ern Oregon and Its Interests Horn both the state committee and the candidate it nominates. -Without exception," Kay said ai ter his talk with these committee men, "these men said they wrre not going to be governed ny tne unit rule, and that the agreement did not so bind them. "I was well received everywhere and the trip was very satisfactory. Many expressed surprise at my good health, having gotten the impres sion that I was an invalid." Commitment of the nominee and the state party organization to an unequivocal declaration for devel onment of the Umatilla rapids pro ject and similar enterprises in which they are vitally interested, assur ance that tile counties east of the Cascades are to receive their share of the political plums disbursed and Uie possibility of securing repre sentation on the board of control if a new state treasurer Is to be appointed, are some of the things in which the Eastern Oreiton dele- antes are known to be Interested The formal bid of the cx-scrvlce men of the state, as represented By the Republican Service league, for recoaiiitlon by the state party or ganizatlon, and the announcement of Julius Meier of Portland of the platform upon which he asks the republican nomination at the hands of the state committee are other outstanding developments over the week-end In the mid-summer no litlral rumnu3. The formal bid of tne ex-service men for political recognition, ru mored and expected for the past several weeks, took tne lorm of. a petition to the state central com mittee signed by about U0 mem bers of Uie Republican Service lea gue from 21 counties of Uie state asking consideration of any "world war veteran of hign standing ana ability" whose name might be sug gested In the deliberauons of Ute committee over a candidate for governor. The petition does not mention any particular candidate as being a possible candidate, nor does the letter signed by Harry N. Nelson, secretary of the league, wnicn ac companied the petition, among the signers of which are Douglas Mc Kay, Perry Qulscnberry, R. H. Bas- sett. Paul P. Burris and Dr. w. Carlton Smith for the Salem vet erans. The letter transmitting the peti tion calls the central committee's attention to the representative na ture of the league over the state. and stresses the fact that the demo cratic party in Oregon has seen fit in the primary election to nominate an ex-service man lor governor, Senator E. P. Bailey. Generally the petition Is not considered as a serious bid for the nomination of a service man for governer. Inasmuch as Uie . league offers no suggestions as to whom of their comrades might be considered available and none have been sug gested from other quarters, but ra ther more as a maneuver to place the veterans in a position for con sideration In the election of chairman of the state committee and to give them a place in the sunlight if Tom Kay should be gubernatorial nominee and uie se lection of a new state treasurer left to the committee. 81nce before the death of the late George Orif fith, former state com mander of the American Legion and then deputy state treasurer, the service men have had a covetous eye upon the state treasurership. Baltimore Mh Three deaths end a score of prostrations in Maryland were blamed on the heat Monday as tliermometers early gave indica Hons that Sunday's record breaking temperatures of above the century mark would be surpassed during the day. A clerk on his way to work Mon day morning dropped dead as the mercury at 9 o'clock had passed the 90 degree mark. Another man died from a broken back received Sunday while he was swimming, and a third man, apparently erased by the 96 degree heat of Hagerstown jumped fully clothed Into the Potomac river and was drowned. New York W Monday's first heat victim was Charles Gallagher, burglar.
