Instead of September. The pastor, Rer. M. A. Groves, will have completed 21 months' work on this charge before conference convenes in Astoria next week. During the past two years, some splendid things have been accomp- Ushed by the West Salem church and the Summit church, both of which are cared for by Rev. Groves. During this period, there has been a net increase in the membership of 50 per cent. &8 new members having been added to the church rolls. A substantial payment on the church debt and some small Im provements to the church properly have been made, a total of $800 having been expended for these purposes. It is felt by an those interested in the welfare of this community that, in a few years, under efficient pas toral and lay leadership and backed" or us memDers and constituents that the Ford Memorial church wil! become one of Salem's leading churches. At the morning services Rev. Groves, will preach his final ser mon for this conference year. His sermon topic will be, "Chosen of God." The special musical num bers will be, a piano offertory and voluntary by Miss Ruth Rees, and a vocal duet by Miss Helen Gosser and Miss Ada Clark. At the evening service, tlie chil dren who have been attending the dally vacation Bible school will give a demonstration of the work they have been doing during the past two weeks. I)r. C, M. PauL" The evening service will be held In the Evangelical church when the choir will present ft musical pro gram. : r IDEAL REBEKAH LODGE INSTALLS NEW OFFICERS Turner The Ideal Rebekah lodge of Turner met Wednesday evening in regular session in the Odd Fel low's building here with a large attendance of members and several visitors. Considerable business was transacted followed by a social hour. Mrs. Gayette Barnett gave a hum orous monologue. This was the first of a series of short plays that have been distributed among the mem bers, a playlet to be presented every lodge meeting to keep the record at tendance of members at every ses sion. Following a social hour the ban quet as served and enjoyed by all present. Additional guests were Mr. and Mrs. George Naderman and children, Gerald and Cleona of 6a lem, and Mrs. Naderman's brother, Cecil Martin of Turner. The next regular meeting of Ideal Rebekah lodge will be an important one, and Installation of officers wiil take place. About 70 children and a few mothers attended the picnic and later the dinner Which was served la the community hall. This Is the second vacation Bible school held in West Salem and it has been much larger and better than the one held last year. In al most every way. Enrollment this year totalled 75 with an average attendance of 54 daily. Both the total enrollment and the daily at tendance far exceed that of last year. A marked enthusiasm has been shown by both the children and tlie teachers and some high class work has been done. A great deal of credit is due tlie teachers. Rev. and Mrs. M. A. Groves, Mrs. Esther Anensen and- Lyle Thomas, who donated their time and ser vices without charge. The school board also heartily cooperated in tho undertaking by- donating the use of the new school house. No tuition was charged the students, but a few expenses were Incurred in running the school and anyone desh'.ng to contribute toward these expenses may do so by seeing Rev. Groves. SCHOLARSHIP STOCK JUDGE MAKES TRIP Zena Jesse Walling will drive to Corvallis where be will attend the stock judging; contest ' before re turning home, accompanied by his younger brother, Ellis, who has been attending: the boy and girls' club session there the past two weeks. This Is the fourth time he has won a scholarship and attended the sum mer school for club members. The boys are both prominent members of the sheep club and have made tlielr honor on Shropshire. The awards this year were a scholarship valued at one hundred dollars which was given to Elsie Jones, and a gold plaque which was awarded to the beat student for the past year wlio was Lavon Morgan, a sophomore. The name will be engraved upon it and kept at the high school. Special honors were also given Cecil Carey and Elsie Jones who won medals in the oratorical con test and who were quite prominent hi dramatics. BED GROSS GIVEN CHECK THROUGH WILL Albany The Linn chapter of the American Red Cross received a check for $117633 Friday from the estate of William W. Olmsted, who died in Portland in 1936. The resi due of Olmsted's estate was to be divided equally between the Albany Red Cross and the Portland Salva tion Army, according to the will of Mr. Olmsted, who was a Civil war veteran. At the time of his death the Linn chapter received $2000.
