OREGON FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 1930 IDAHO WETS SPURN ADVICE OF GOVERNOR Wallace, Idaho W) Declaring that "we do not need the paternal advice of our governor in doing a proper and legal act in -conformity with the best traditions of the re public," state: senator, Donald A. Callahan, president of the recently formed Idaho association for re peal of the 18th amendment, Fri day answered Oovemor Baldrldge's attack against his antl-prohlbltion campaign. Governor H. C. Baldrldge of Ida ho had assailed "antl-prohibltion campaigns that fail to offer any substitute to prevent the return of saloon days" and said that unless Callahan "is able to suggest some thing better than the present pro hibition enforcement" he is "doing himself an Injustice," 'The voters of Shoshone countv have formed a perfectly legal and orderly association to work for the repeal of the 18th amendment," Senator Callahan's message said. They are following the course used by the prohibition forces In secur ing adoption of an amendment for the purpose of promoting temper ance and securing compliance with the law, which fits the public con science, removing a source of cor ruption and protecting youth. "When the 18th amendment has been removed the American people will be free to enact such legisla tion as will remedy present con ditions and bring about respect lor law. I am willing to trust to the judgment of the people, once they are free to act.". UNION PACIFIC BUYS $500,000 BUSSES MONTMARTRE LIGHTS . A succession of speakers told the congress that their propagandists must abandon the idea that religion can be exterminated in Russia over night. They declared that excesses committed by atheistic workers and village officials in the war on re ligion must forthwith cease. The conclave was warned that no attempt must be made to close churches by force, to remove church bells, to coerce peasants into join ing the league of the Godless, or to proclaim entire districts as "athe istic regions." Alternatives oi peaceful argument, persuasion, propaganda, and scien tific explanation were listed by Erne ly an Yaroslavsky, chairman of the Society of Militant Atheists, who declared that propaganda particu larly must be Intensified, partly among women who, he said, were more ignorant and superstitious than men. This moderation, however, did not prevent speakers striking back at Pope Pius for his recent denuncia tion of the anti -religious campaign, and for his mass and prayers Wed nesday at St. Peter's. The "Godless One," official atheist organ, printed a drawing of the pontiff sitting pla cidly on a throne, while victim after victim of the religious inquisition was hanged and tortured before him. The caption, "Your Blood-stained Hands are Too Short to" Strangle Soviet Workers," was carried over the picture, while in the accom panying columns it was said: I Those who overthrew on earth (he thrones of the czars, manufac turers and land owners, those who build a new life with their own hands, are in no need of a Ood or heavenly protection. Our leaders no longer wish for the chiming of bolls, the light of holy candles, or the burning of In cense. They want to build palaces of culture, to erect tall radio masts, and to cover their country with a long chain of universities."
