Chase was elected pres- Club Meet Salem Folk To Entertain 500 Girls The eighteenth annual Oregon girls' conference held under the auspices of the Oregon council of Christian education with Dr. Wal ter L. Van Nuys, president, will take place in Salem, April 4, 5, and 6. Mrs. Jean M. Johnson, of Portland Is conference director; Miss Daphne Hughes of Roseburg. president of the conference, and Miss Clyrol Hal lock of Portland, secretary. Many very fine speakers are com ing to this conference. Among thern re Governor Norblad, who will give a welcome and Helen Dorothy Hay nes of McMlnnville who will give the response. Mrs. Virginia. Judy Esterly, dean of women. at the uni versity of Oregon, will attend for the whole conference and conduct personal problem talks with girls. She will also give the Sunday after noon conference address. Mrs. Ho mer T. Chamberlain, Oregon social hygiene, will give personal inter views and a short talk to the con ference on "Boy and Girl Relations." Miss Pearl Sherlock, director of re ligious education at Westminister Presbyterian church, Portland, will give a five minute talk on "Tuxis," and also Interviews. Miss Dulcina Brown, superintendent of week day Bible schools for Portland, and a Sunday schoo. expert, will talk on "A girl's place in the Sunday school" and hold interviews on these sub jects. Miss Margaret Edmundson, chairman of the Seabeck division of nation 21, student council Y. W. C. A. will talk on "My experiences as a factory girl." The theme for the conference Is A Sower Went Out to Sow." It will be handled In a series of four talks by Dr. Walter L. Van Nuys, presi dent of the Oregon council of Chris tian education. He has Just recently J returned from a visit to raicsunc and the Bible lands which will add to the interest In his talks. Plans are also going forth for the extensive means of procuring hous ing for the 600 girls expected. Mrs. W. A. Schultz of Salem is chairman of this committee. A large mass meeting is also being held in the Presbyterian church of delegates from all the churches of the city to aid in making this con ference the" best. It will be held March 9 at 3 o'clock. Miss Muriel White is chairman of the Salem girls. ' - - t'- - SL Patrick's Day Program Planned The young people of St. Joseph's Catholic church are preparing a rollicking Irish play and entertain ment for the evening of St. Patrick's day, March 17.' The Sacred Heart academy students will participate, and there will be some special num bers between acts.' The principal parts of the play will be taken by Lillian DeMytt, Jos ephine Barr, Ivy Cowglll. Barbara Bchotthoefer, Lawrence Alley, Glen Savage, Kimball Page and Arnold Jarvls. Harry Gardener officiated, reading the service In the presence of 50 relatives and friends of the . bridal couple. The vows were exchanged before a bank of fern, palm, and carna tions. Mrs. Dorothy Perrlne of Rose burg sang "AU For Thee" prior to the ceremony, and I uve iou Truly" after the service. Miss Pran ces Granm was the accompanist. Miss Louvera Horn played the wed ding processional and recessional. The bride wore her golng-away ensemble suit of brown, with small brown hat and accessories to match. Bhe also wore a corsage bouquet of roses, violets, sweet peas and lllles-of-the-valley. Her sister, Miss Mar garet Pro, who was her only at tendant, wore a blue ensemble suit with a eorsaga of blue violets. , Oeorge Poor of Portland served as best man. An Informal reception at the home of Uw bride's parents followed. Baskets of daffodils, pink carnations, blue hyaernth, and tall ptnk tapers werw used about the rooms. Immediately following the recep tion, Mr. and Mrs. Hulings left by motor on a wedding trip north. On their return they will make then home In Portland, where Mr. Hul ings Is service engineer for Oregon for the R. C. A. corporation. A number of pre-nuptlal affairs have been given In compliment to Mrs, Huling. She Is popular with the younger set, and a graduate of Salem high school in the 1928 class. Music Groups To Present Artist Mina Hager, noted mezzo-contralto, will be presented in concert at the Elsinore theater March 31 by the Salem Madrigal club and the Salem Men's Civic chorus. Both or ganizations are directed by Prof. E. W.' Hobson. Miss Ha get's appearance in Salera last year was a delightful musical event, and it is anticipated that her recital here the last ol the month will be an outstanding event in mu sical circles. Miss Hager has just returned to the United States from a series of concerts in Mexico City where she was accorded a most en thusiastic ovation. Miss Hager is an unusual artist. In recital her programs are notable for their freshness and novelty and her faithful and vivid Interpretation of the composer. She is undoubted ly one of the great interpretative artists now on the concert stage. This is combined with a rich and ex pressive voice, a vibrant personality and fine musicianship. She has sung with the Chicago Grand Opera company, the Chicago symphony or chestra, the Berlin philharmonic or chestra, the New York symphony orchestra, and many other musical associations, and has been a solo artist in numberless recitals. Mr. and Mrs. Myers Honored by Club Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Mysra were complimented on their 31st wedding anniversary Thursday evening by members of the Hsppy Hour card i club. A pot-luck dinner ras served v,ith 3 tables of "500" following. High score honors went to Mrs. Minnie Clark and W. J. Lee. Second prizes were awarded Mrs. Rube Tee ters and Prank .Crazier. Mr. Woodry drove to Portland for his son and two companions, Leon Porlier and Delbert Harritt, all students at Hill Military academy, returning with them Just in time for the dinner, which was a surprise event for Don ald Woodry. K. etock well. while their husbands attended the meeting of the Marlon county medical asosciation In the Elks club. The women formed a social organ ization, with Mrs. H. K. Btockweu as president, Mrs. H. J. Clements and Mrs. R. E. Lee Stelner as vice presidents, Mrs. Jerald Backstrand as corresponding secretary and Mrs. Burton A. Myers as recording secre tary. During the social hour at the Stockwell home, Mrs. H. J. Clements gave a delightful travelogue of the trip abroad from which she lias Just returned. . Mrs. Sadie Orr Dunbar of Port land, prominent in the state tuber culosis association, gave the main address on health education. Mrs. Dunbar stressed the fine work done in Portland in health work and the results which Are coming from It. Mrs. Adrian McCalman of the state tuberculosis association,' head quarters at Portland, told of the sys tem in sending out Christmas seals, and Mrs. T. J. Bra bee of the locul Woman's club committee on seal sales reported the present condition of the fund. Mrs. Gordon McGilchrist, soloist for the afternoon, sang two Irish songs, "The Kerry Dance," and "A Little Bit Ol Heaven." Mrs. Tea Gordon was the accompanist. - Magazines Sought By Club Women . Members of the Institutions de partment of the Salem Woman's club are again seeking contributions of magazines for the different state institutions around Salem. Local people that have magazines which they have read are asked not to discard them but to give them to the club women for distribution to the institutions. Current magazines, less than six months old, are especially solicited. ... Magazines should be taken to the home of Mrs, 8. M. At least two community concerts one for adults and one- for the younger flok, are being planned as outstanding events of the observance of music week here. The music teachers' organization Is also try ing to secure some one noted mu sician to present a recital here dur ing that period. Schools, churches, theaters and civic organizations are eing asked to assist with special programs. In the observance an emphasis will once more be laid upon the need for a greater degree of active participation in music on the part of people in general not only among. . the children but especially on ine part of the adults. All the previous music weeks have been enlisting children and grow-ups alike, but the coming celebration, while again featuring schools, will also empha size the value of preserving In adult life the musical aptitudes which are now being developed through pub lic school musio and through other activities of young people. The cele bration is particularly designed to be a reminder that there Is no age limit in the enjoyment om music. The study classes of the Salem Woman's club house will be held -Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the club house, according to an nouncement by Mrs. J. M. Devers, chairman of the division. Mrs. J. C. Nelson will give a book review on Arnold Cweit's war book, "The Case of Sergeant Grischa," which Is acknowledged in point of litera ture and method of treatment to be one of the finest war books pub lished.
