posed to take the Burling ton system
away from the Great Northern and

and to erect by addition of the Mis-sourt-Kansas-Texas
to the Burling
ton, a new and extensive railroad
structure. The Burlington system
Drolected will include a half inter
est in the Great Western and like
wise a half Interest In the Tnnr.y
and Brazos valley and would run
from the Canadian border to Mexico.
The Great Northern and Northern
Pacific would be barred in another
consolidation including most of their
present affiliated and connecting
lines. Around tne cnicago, Miiwau
.tee. St. Paul and Pacific the com
mission proposed another single sys
tem by the Inclusion of the Duiutn,
Missabe and Northern, the Lniiutn
and Iron Range, a hilt Interest In
he Butte, Anaconda and Pacific
and trackage rights and partial In
terests in several short Unes which
would be associated with other mer
ger systems as well.
The union Pacllic was left prac
tically all of Its present subsidiaries
arid was tentatively assigned a num
ber of short lines. Similar treatment
was accorded the Southern Pacific
and among the assignments to that
company of lines at present inde
pendent were the Waco, Beaumont,
Trinity and Sabine.
The Missouri Pacific was definite
ly enlarged by the inclusion in it of
the Western Pacific, which corpora
tion is now seeking an entrance into
San Francisco and was confirmed
in the acquisition of the Denver and
Rio Orande Western In which It is
now interested.

! Friday afternoon I was In In
dependence where Ross Nelson,
owner of the Islg Theater, had
asked ail children of that city to
coma to big moving picture how
as his guest for a special news
reel ho wing many fcenes in the
north land. This made ma long for
the loe and snow and I might have
been homesick If it were not for
the smiling faces of nearly 300
boys and girls that welcomed me
to Independence.
Independence Is not as large as
Sllverton nor Dallas, but 1 think
all the children were at the thea
ter for I went outside once or
twice while you were watching the
picture and did not ae me, but
I could not find any children
around town. It was very kind of
Mr. Nelson to offer the use of his
theater for he Is only keeping It
open two night a week and I am
sure the little guest appreciated
his kindness.
Friday night I visited the folks
at the state tuberculosis hospital
and I am mighty glad I did, for
both grown-ups and the youngsters
gave me fine welcome. Out there
I found something that made 'me
sad. In the ward where they keep
the patients who are unable to
leave their beds are two elderly
women who have no money. Every.
body but these two old ladies have
special radio head-sets by which
they can plug In and hear music
whenever they want to, but they
have not enough money to pur
chase these set which the state
does not provide. One of the at
lendants informed me that these
cost only 81.75 each, so I prom.
ised that I would bring them
set for Christmas and you should
have seen how happy it made
them. Maybe I will have to call
on some of the Salem folks to help
me, for my supply of seta may
have been exhausted while I have
been away from my workshop. Any
how, they are" going to get their
wish, for I promised them, and
all you boys and girls know that
when Santa Claus makes a prom
ise he always keeps it.
Boys and girls of the northern
part of the country are being
visited Saturday afternoon and I
expect them to come from Hub
bard, Monitor, Gervals and St. Paul
and all the other communities to
the Bungalow theater In Wood-
burn, where they are the guests of
Fred Evenden, of the Evenden
Drug store and C. P. Hansen, of
the Hansen Motor company, to Bee
the pictures of my homeland of

Hansen will both be present so that
I can thank them for their kind
ness, for had they not provided a

one fot at Mount Carmcl, 111. Water
was spreading over the lowlands but
the low temperatures turned It Into
Ice blockades halted ferry service
over the Ohio river at Shawnee
Town.

Danville a bobsled was utilized to
bear a coffin to a cemetery after
the funeral cortege was stalled.
The most serious aftermath of the
storm In the Chicago area was
the closing of the East Chicago.

Michigan prevented repairs.
