There never were so many little kiddies In Salem In danger of being overlooked by Santa Claus as this year, according to Bob Cole, chair man of the Elks welfare comrrjuee which is charged with the task seeing that not a single boy or girl In the community la overlooked on Christmas morning. "And It Is not only toys and books and games, and candy and nuts they are going to need to make their Christmas a merry one,' said Mr. Cole. "Santa Is gring to have to have good shoes with heavy dry soles, stockings, underclothes, dress es and suits and coats that will keep the rain and cold out Everywhere we are finding boys and girls who need these things, and we are going , to see that Santa brings them along with the trinkets that belong to the kiddles on Christmas. Many of them are going to have to have wood in their homes, also. And blankets are going to be need ed to take the place of (unnysacks and rags under which I saw two little boys sleeping. "Santa Is going to need help to fill all ot these orders he did not know existed on such short notice. We know the generous people of Salem are going to help him again Just like they have evsry year In the past. But we want them to hurry. The time la getting short and we have got to have money and everything else." Any question as to Santa's not being able to reach Salem as ached uled next Saturday morning was dissipated Tuesday when Lea Cyer ly, superintendent of the munici pal airport and head of the Eyerry aircraft corporation, announced that the relief plana which la to meet Santa at Nome, Alaska, will be ready to take off Wednesday. A wireless message from Captain Ktelnschmldt and the rest of the Capital Journal expedition party, with whom Santa, U returning to Salem, early Tuesday morning said that the party mould arrive In Nome not later than Thursday mornjnf. The party hag been travelling south from Santal&nd by reindeer team and dog led becauie lt'a airplane was wrecked m a terrible windstorm. STORM SOAKS ALL . Police reserves and ambulances began arriving but there was noth ing that could be done to help thone trapped in the building. For over an hour the fire raged and then, as the flames died down, the bodies were found, most of them just inside the 134th street entrance to the building a step or two from life and safety. Although several of the bodies were badly burned most of those who lost their lives had died from suffocation. Two priests from a nearby church ad ministered the last rites.
