Mrs. John Caughcil, Jr.. and Miss Ka'herine Hartley entertained for Miss Griffith with an evening of bridge and a kitchen shower In the Hartley home Thursday evening. Five tables of bridge were in play, with the prizes going to Mrs. Bia sler Small and Miss Lou Thompson. The popular bride-elect was pre sented with a number of useful gifts after the evening of cards. At m late hour Miss Prudence Patter son assisted Mrs. Caughell and Miss Hartley in serving reiresnments. In the group were the honor guest, Miss Griffith, her molher, Mrs. L. p. Miss Leah Ross is entertaining for Miss Griffith . with a theater party Monday night, and Tuesday afternoon Miss Lou Thompson is entertaining in the Thompson home on Chemeketa street with an inter esting bridge tea honoring the bnde elect. Church Group Elects Officers Burton Randall was elected to the presidency of the South Salem Friends senior Sunday school class at a class party held Friday eve ning at the Lome of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Miles. Other officers chosen during the brief business session Included Virginia Ahalt, secretary; Nora Davidson, treasurer; and so cial committee chairman, Bernice Turman. Following the business session, games, community singing and a taffy pull was enjoyed by the group. Those present were Miss Gladys Scott, Miss Nora Davidson, Miss Bernice Turman, Miss Mildred Jager, Miss Ruth Davis, Miss Anna Calaba, Miss Virginia Al-alt, Miss Erma Baker, Alfred Haworth, Jack Trochsel, Burton Randall, Don Pat ton, Paul Patton, Roland Hardman, Mrs. B. J. C. Ratton, and the hosts, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Miles. Judge and Mrrs. Henry J. Bean will entertain on Thanksgiving day with an Informal family dinner. Commercial St. Miss Elizabeth Levy, Salem vio linist, will attend the Portland symphony recital at the Portland auditorium Monday night, when Paul Kochanskl, Polish violinist, will be the featured artist. Miss Levy and M. Kocliamki were both students of the famous Cesar Thomson of the Royal Conserva tory of Music at Brussels. Belgium. Kochanskl is a graduate of the conservatory, while Miss Lew studied with Thomson at the con servatory and also In New York City. ... State Federation Meeting Dates Set The Salem Woman's club will be hostess to the state federation of Women's clubs May 12. 13, 14 and 15, for the semi-annual state con vention. Mrs. Harry L. Wiedmer, local club president, anticipates having all her committees for con vention arrangements appointed by the first of the year. Efforts are being made to secure the house of representatives at the state house for convention sessions. At the regular business meeting Saturday, preceeding the program and tea with Salem teachers as special guests, the club women voted to combine the Guest day. scheduled for December 18. with the reception for new members of January 25. holding both meetings on the latter date, so that Christ mas plans of the membership group might not be interfered with. The tea committees for both the Decem ber and January meetincs will prob ably combine for the large affair. Prof. M. E. Peck A. A. U. W. Speaker Professor Morton E. Peck, of Wil lamette university, addressed mem bers of the Salem branch, Ameri can Association of University Wo men, at a meeting Saturday in the home of Mrs. A. N. Bush. Prof. Peck discussed "super aircraft or the flight of birds, tracing the de velopment of flying from the crea tion of th first flying life to the com parison of the flight of migratory birds with man-made aircraft. The lecture proved to be one of the mof-t Interesting of the year. Pol lowing the talk, Mrs. Dodd led the group of women about the Bush home. Informally discussing the j various art treasures it contains. Mrs. Asa Fisher, chairman of the Salem district sale of historical maps printed by the Portland A. A. U. W., displayed a sample of the map, which Is printed in brown and red on brown cover paper and is suitable for framing or for gifts. The map was made by George Wildman, Portland artist, for the A. A. U. W. project, and is historically and pictorially correct. Maps may be secured either from Mrs. FVher or Miss Beryl Holt. Miss Ann Boentje will spend the holidays in Portland as the guest of her brother and sister-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. John Boentje. is 49c www ill Sororities Entertain At Open House The three sorority houses at Wil lamette university held their an nual open house for townspeople and university faculty and students Saturday night from 7 :30 to 9 o'clock. A large number of visitors called during the hours at the Delta Phi, Alpha Phi Alpha and Beta Chi houses. At the Delta Phi house, Miss Margaret Bolt received at the door, and Miss Pauline Findley intro duced to the receiving hue. In the line were Miss Mary Hershberger, house president; Mrs. Paul E. Ed wards, house mother; Dr. and Mrs. M. C. Findley, Dr. and Mrs. Charles L. Sherman and Miss Mar garet Pro. The program Saturday night in cludes instrumental numbers by Miss Helen Price, Miss Edith Find ley and Miss Iva Claire Love, and vocal numbers by Miss Marjorie Mil ler and Miss Lillian Scott. Presiding at the attractive table were Miss Florence hmmons ana Miss Anna Lanke for the first naif hour, and Miss Yvonne Cornell and Miss Mildred Cook for the second hall hour. Assisting in the serving were the Misses Mary Allen, Virginia Ed wards, Emma Green, Jean Middle ton, Dorothy Pemberton, Joyce Kidder, Elizabetn Atkinson, Doro thy Bosshard, Marian Bre:z, Kath ryn Elgin, Amy Fox and Betty Lewis. Miss Marie Nessersmith assisted about the rooms at the Delta Phi house and Miss Leone Spaulding presented the favors -to the visitors. Sophomore girls ushered about the living rooms and halls. Senior girls were hostesses at the Beta, Chi house, with the sopao mire girls serving as ushers. Miss Caroyl Bra den and Miss Norabelle Pratt met the visitors at the door, with Miss Braden presenting the favors. Miss Florence Power intro duced to the line, which incuded Miss Katherine Everett, house pres ident; Mrs. Alice Dodd, house mother; Professor and Mrs. Frank Erickson, Professor and Mrs. E. C, Richards, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wal lace and Miss Frances McGilvra. Miss Leila Johnson presided at the serving urn. Assisting in the serving were the Misses Beatrice Booth, Olive Jones, Virginia Holt, Helen Boardman, Lucile Brown and Louise Sidwell. Miss Dorothy Gordon, house president; Mrs. W. B. Johnson, house mother; J. H. Lauterman, Dr. and Mrs. Carl Gregg Doney, Dr. and Mrs. R. M. Gatke, and Mr. and Mrs. George Allen were in the receiving line at the Alpha Phi Alpha house. A program wi.s given, includ ing instrumental numbers by Miss Helen Flannery, Miss Marorie Odell, Miss Grace Henderson, and .Miss Louise Plummer, and vocal numbers by Miss Elizabeth Ogden. Birthday Party For Marilyn Zeller Little Miss Marilyn Zeller was honored on her sixth birthday anni-. versary by her mother, Mrs. Oscar ZeJler, with a gay party in the Zeller home on Center street Sat urday afternoon. Eight small guests were entertained with an in formal afternoon of games and music. At the tea hour, refreshments were served at a table centered with an elaborately decorated birthday cake with six candles. Pink and white favors marked covers for the small guests, Marilyn 'Zeller, Patsy Holt, Patty Plank, Janice Lemmon, Jean Rowland. Betty Robinette, Doris Chapter, Mary Ellen Mills and Rosemary Allen. Daughters of the Nile, motored to Portland Sat urday to attend the Nile ceremon ial in the ballroom of the Portland Maionic temple in the afternoon and the dinner and program at the Benson hotel Saturday evening. Miss Edna New berry, who Is leaving Monday even ing for Wenatchee, Wash, where she will work in the office of the hospital there. The evening was spent in conversation and clever games. A luncheon was served at a late hour by the hostess. Miss Gla dys Newberry, assisted by her slter, Miss Helen and by Miss Alice Graves. Routine business was transacted, and plans laid to make a coverlet for an in valid young woman, who has to be confined to her bed. A letter from Miss Ella St. Pierre who is teaching In the Hawlian Is lands this winter, was read and a round robin letter by all members of the club is to be sent to her. This will have to sail from Seattle the first part of December to reach her by Christmas. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. George Trott. 1045 North 16th Street. Salem, and Mrs. Trott and Mrs. L. F. Brown are to present the program. Plans for the Christmas meeting will then be made. Turner Students At Salem Home Turner Mrs. Jean Pearcy enter tained the Turner high school ju nior and sophomore classes Satur day night in her home on Fairmount hill, Salem. Members of the classes and their friends played numerous games, during the evening. In an informal, Mrs. Pearcy played piano selections; Harold Witcraft of Aumsvllle high school sang a solo; Josephine Gilstrap gave several pia no numbers; and all of the young people sang favorite songs with Mrs. Pearcy playing the piano.
