Wes Houghton, one of the propri etors of the Santiam MercanUle store at Oates, was bringing a truck "?bad of baled hay from Marion to the Bock farm west of Gates, when he was hit by the train in Mill city, Hear the Santiam bridge. The truck " was so damaged that Mr. Houghtoo hired another -truck to deliver his hay. . j '- -4j The same afternoon a car, whose .driver waa not known here, went .over the bank on what is known as Ue Bevier hill south of the school-' ..house, This road was. recently wid .. ened but evidently. LeRoy Grafe and three children, accompanied by Mr. Grafe's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Grafe, motored to Newberg for the week-end to visit relatives, especially Mr. Grafe's sis ter, Mrs. Brlstow of Seattle, who Is visiting at Newberg. Mrs. Lang Stafford of Kings Prairie is quite ill .at her home. Mrs. W. E. Bevier is helping care for her for a few days. Mrs. Floyd Bassett accompanied by Banford Bassett and his daugh ter, Mrs. Earl Allen of Lyons mo tored to Albany, Sunday to bring Mrs. Sanford Bassett from the hos pital where she has been for several j-weeks, recovering from an operation for appendlcitles. Her home is on King's Praui. She Is being cared for in her home by Mr. Bassett's mo tlier. BROWNSVILLE MEN HELD FOR DRUG Albany Tobey Smith of Browns tllle pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated on a publlo high way in justice court here Tuesday. He ni sentenced to serve 25 days In the Linn county Jan upon lauure to d&v his i25 line. After the morning session a basket din ner was held at noon with the Meade Salvation Army orchestra as ffuests; in the alternoon the or chestra furnished music and held religious services for a well filled house. The services were held In the auditorium of the high school building. BRUSH. (Grandpa) Ste vens of Pl&lc street was found in an unconscious condition on the floor of his room Sunday about noon by two of his neighbors. Mrs. Grossman and Mrs. Small, who had not seen him around. " He had evidently suffered a stroke some time in the monung and as he was living alone this fact was not known- sooner. He was taken to the hospital oh a stretcher and Is still unconscious. Stevens has been bothered with heart trouble and high blood pres sure. He a 19 years old and has only one relative in the west. grandson, Harold Williams, wio is now in Idaho and so far friends have been unable to locate him. Mrs. Ernest Starr Is his step grand- child. He has one brother in New York. Grave doubt is Xelt for his recovery. BIRTHDAY SRPRISE GIVEN MRS. WILLIG Mt. Angel Mrs. Laurel Lamb and Mrs. Elsie Hoffman were hostesses at a party complimenting Mrs. George Willig, jr on the occasion of her birthday. The affair, which was a complete surprise, was held at the George Willig. Jr country home north of town. After an eve ning of music and games a late supper was served by the hostesses. Presumably the fir started from a spark from a donkey engine and first burned the logged off area and at the ptesent time hi burning a tract 15 miles and heading towards Scotts Mills and Is said so far to be beyond contraL Silverton The fire department was called to Howell Prairie Mon day afternoon where fire had start ed In a stubble field from the haust of a tractor. A. E. Keunzie nad his baler and tractor at the R. C. Ramsden farm and with his crew had been bail. Ing straw there since morning. An the help near there was obtained and they whipped th fir out with sacks but could not work quick ly enough so Silverton was called. The machines were considerably damaged, especially the baler which had many wooden parts. All of the baled and loose straw was burned. It Is thought thst both the tractor and baler can be repaired. Thomas was rushed to the weal hospital when he Is resting well. SIGNS FOR TEACHING Suverton Ennes Rowland, who was graduated from Monmouth normal this spring has accepted a position as teacher in tile Merrill schools. Merrill Is beyond Klamath Falls near the California border. He will teach either the 7th or 8th grades Rowland was graduated from the local high school and was an excellent student as he was at Monmouth.
