John Calavan at her home near Talbot recently. Roll call. At four o'clock lunch was served by Mrs. Calavan, assisted by Kreta Calavan and Neva Emm Inns. Mrs. Fred Myers was a special guest for the afternoon. KTNOWOOD Klngwood Dr. Emma Curtis Tucker, of Chadron, Nebraska, who was a house guest at the St. Pierre home last week, Is ft very interest ing woman, having hiked around the world. A number of years ago she and a young woman companion hiked across the United States, taught school that year In Oregon, and sailed to China In the summer. Dr. Tucker secured a teaching po sition in China, taught there a year, taught In Japan a year and one in India, hiking across between coun tries in vacations. Then, still hiking she crossed the remainder of Asia, and Europe, and returned to Ameri ca by steamer, and has been teach ing In Nebraska the past school year. With this cosmopolitan ex perience and ft happy gift of re miniscence, she is remarkably en tertaining visitor. She left for Seat tle the last of the week. Miss Hazel Emmett, who grad uated with the June class from the Oregon Normal school at Monmouth last Friday, has moved home to en Joy her vacation before beginning her school in West Salem, in the fall. Mr. and Mrs. Slotrard Osland. who arrived with their sons, Robert and John Osland, from Woonsocket. South Dakota Wednesday, visited at the O. Elmer Vosburgh home Sunday. They wilt make their home in Hollywood. Miss Mary Slag Is making an ex tended visit at the John Riesbeck home. Mr. and Mrs. Archie McKay, of Brooks were guests at the S. A. La Raut place recently. Angel fire- mpn are making final preparations for a dance, Tuesday evening, to celebrate the purchase of a large new Lincoln fire truck. The dance will be given Tuesday evening In the school auditorium and the proceeds will be used to help pay for the new truck. The committee in charge ol the dance include C. J. Terhaar, A. T. Butsch and John Bigle. Syecial music wilt be had for the dance. HAZEL GUEEN Gjiy Looney and son Glen mo tored to Philomath Monday for the purpose of bringing home Guy Al len Looney Jr., who has been at tending college there the past year. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dunigan sr. , were dinner guests recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ed wards of Salem. The Edwards were former residents of this vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dunigan Sr. spent Saturday at the Lebanon strawberry festival and incidentally ! visited with a number of friends who : were formerly located in this vicln-1 lty among them being Peter Tweedt, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bartruff Louie Peebles), and Mr. O. E. Peebles and sons Ralph and Frank. The late Mrs. Peebles was for many years the pastor of the local church. The Peebles are now located near La comb on a strawberry ranch. . ; BKO AD AGUES Mr. and Mrs. Arne Kclmo from Laramie. Wyoming, have been guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. Keinf jord and their daughter, Mrs. Louise Madden. Ole Alxeander, a neph ew of Mr. Reinf Jord, was also their guest recently. He was also from Laramie. Word received states that Mr. Llbby, who was taken seriously ill in Portland, Is now on the way to recovery. There were 12 of the girls and one ad visor, Mrs. Lee Alfred. Tho girls spent the hours swimming, picking flowers and having marshmallow and wiener roasts. The girls also had two meals out on the green, SCOTTS MILLS BARBER MOVES HIS BUSINESS C. W. Johnson moved his confec tionery and barber shop Friday in to the Reed building property that he has .recenty purchased and re modeled for that purpose. He is still on the same street but on the op posite tide. Mrs. Robert S hilts and children drove from Bridge, Ore., hert and visited a sitter, Mrs. Maude Myers and his parents, Mr. and Mra. Marts of near Molalla. They recently left for home and Mr. and Mrs. James Shllts returned with them for a few weeks' visit. Angel At a recent meeting of the Knights of Columbus, plans were made for their annual outing and picnic. The tentative date la set' for August 4, at Champoeg park. Frank Duda and daughter. Miss Teresa Duda left Sunday for Oma ha, Neb., where they mill visit with relatives and friends for an Indefi nite time. They will also tour the middle west, and on their return trip will visit with the Rehorst boys at StevensvUle, Mont. The Dudas are prominent fanners living east of town. Miss Gladys McGee left for an extended trip to Minnesota, where she .will visit with relatives and friends. Miss McGee is a teacher in the St. Mary's school here. Rev. Father Bede Rose. D. D, re turned Thursday from a two months mission at Claries ton, Wash., where he had been relieving the resident priest during a trip to Rome. George Kinney of Albany, a for mer Mt. Angel college student, was a visitor here recently. Joseph Imwallie and Leo Gil feather of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Ted Voss of Palo Alto, Calif., visit ed with friends here and at Mt. Angel college Thursday. GENTLE PRESENTS GRADUATION TALK Mehama Tfeomas Gentle of the University of Oregon faculty was the speaker at graduation exercises for the eighth grade of Mehama school held Tuesday evening In the local church. Chester Kubin, chair man of the Mehama school board, introduced the speaker and mem bers of the graduating cass. Mrs. Mary L. Fukerson, county school superintendent, presented diplomas to the following graduates: Arlyn Moe. Alice Marts, Elma Car ruth, Ina Goodell, Alice Boyington, Lorcne Landers and Harry Monroe. Mrs. Lillian Poyner, teacher of the school the past year, has been elect ed for another term. ILL-FATED FAMILY GOING TO HOOD RIVER Silverton Fred Ha.sk Ln3 and six children expect to move from the Cowing addition to Hood River next Wednesday where they will be em ployed during the summer season. The family came from the middle west some time ago. Ill luck has followed them ever since. Mr. Has- kins was out of work for months, then Mrs. Haskins was taken ill and passed away. Now the chil dren have all Just recovered from a siege of the mumps and were out of quarantine Wednesday. EDITOR LEAVES Mt. Angei Mr. and Mrs. Norman Farquharson. who have been edit ing the Mt. Angel News for the past 14 months, left for College Place, Wastungton, where they will visit relatives and friends for some time. Mr. Farquharson has not decided a new location, but has several places in view. GORDON OFF TO CAMP Silverton Bryan Gordon, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Gordon of the Silverton Hills, left Friday morn ing for Camp Lewis, where ho will bo at encampment for two weeks. Byran has attended school at Ore gon Agricultural college for two years and intends going back this faU. VISITS JARVIS HOME Silverton Mrs. Mary Jarvis of Salem Is visiting at the home of her son, Clair, and family this week. Miss Ethel Graham was taken to The Dalles by Mrs. George Shet hainmer a day or two ago, where she is visiting her mother for a few weeks. TICKET AGENT ON TRIP Independence P. K. Montgom ery left at midnight Thursday for a pleasure trip to California. He Is traveling by train and his place as agent at the depot u being xilled temporarily by Oscar Frederlckson. Meier gave a character sketch from the Bible on the life of Paul, while Mrs. C. F. Johnston presented a paper on Cottonwoods. Mrs. R. H. Farr was awarded the prize in the game furnished by Mrs. M. J. Clark Mumper of Scio has enlist ed in the Oregon national guard and is attending the annual en campment for two weeks. Roy Devlin and family and his sister. Miss Myrtle Devlin came In from Wray, Colo., a few days ago and have taken berry picking jobs at Lacomb. Mrs. Devlin Is a niece of C. M. Donovan of the Sclo hotel. Mrs. R. S. Davis Is under treat ment at the state tuberculosis san itarium in Salem. Raymond Chromy returned a few days ago from Eugene, where he completed a term In public ac counting at the state university. He will be on the road most of the sum mer and expects to return to the university In September. ATTEND GRADUATION Mt. Angel Mr. and Mrs. Josenh Bernt and daughters motored to Portland Thursday to attend the graduation of their daughter. Miss Marie Bernt, from the school of nursing at St. Vincent's hospital, Portland. MISS KUN'O VISITS Silverton Florence Merryman. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Merry man of the Cowing addition has as her house guest. Lan Chen Kung. a senior at O. A. C, who will complete ner course there by fall, after which she intends to go to New York to study some time before returning to ner home in China, where she intends to teach. DOCTOR RECOVERING Silverton Word has been re ceived from Dr. H. S. Sauve that he has suffered a nervous break down while visiting his friends, Mr. and Mrs. H. Dedrich at Seattle, Wash. Bis health Is now Improving and he expects to be in Portland again soon and will make It a point to visit his friends both in Silverton and in Mk Angel. LEAVING FOR DAKOTA Silverton Mrs. Rasmus Wik and four daughters of Kooos street will leave next week for Plerport, South Dakota, where they expect to spend the summer visiting Mrs. Wik's parents and other relatives. Miss Evelyn Thomas went to Oak Point near Independence Monday evening to attend the program and graduation exercises of the eighth grade of the Oak Point school. Mrs. Aita Gillian and sister. Miss Iva Richardson of Baker, Oregon, arrived here Monday for an all summer's stay at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Lemon. Mrs, Gil liam, who Is Mrs. Lemon's mother, visits here frequently. The L. D, 8. relief society of Sa lem, of which a number of West Salem women are. members, held a picnic at the Eola springs Wed nesday. The Warren Bakers, of the Rob ertson apartments on King wood avenue, have purchased an acreage on Cascade Drive and plan to erect a residence in the near future. The city water department has recently made water connections there. Angel Many men are arriv ing from all parts of Oregon and Washington to attend the ninth an nual Laymen's Retreat, now being held at Mt. Angel college. The retreat started Friday morn ing and will close Sunday morning with mass at the St. Benedict's Ab bey church. The Ru Rer. Abbot Lambert Bur ton, O. e. B., of St. Martin's college. Lacey, Wash, to conducting the re treat. Many who are unable to stay at the college for the entire retreat, take advantage of the wonderful talks given each evening at 7:30 at the college. FORMER SILVERTON MAN MAKES BURNER Silverton Jonas Kloppensteln of Portland, a former Silverton resi dent and who has been on the Port land police force for several years was in the city a few days ago and told of a sawdust burner he had re cently invented and is now manu facturing. He states that he is sell them at the average of 30 per month. He says these burners ab solutely form no clinkers on their grates. He has named his burner the "Superior." 0BERSINNER HOME IS SCENE FOR SURPRISE Mt. Angel Complimenting Mrs. Joseph Oberslnner on the occasion of her birthday, a number of friends honored her with a surprise party recently at the Obersinner home north of here.
