EXCLUSIVE NEWS DISPATCHES MARION - LINN COUNTY NEWS BY SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 1929 MARION COUNTY YOUTH IS REPORTED MISSING PAGE TWO FEAR IS FELT THORNLEY BOY ; MET ACCIDENT , Silverton Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Thoraley, who live on the Gervais road off the Silverton-Salem hlgb way, are much worried over the disappearance of their 13 year old son Elvln who has not been seen or heard from since Monday morn ing when he left the Daphne Hunt Home in the Waldo Hills district, tupposedly for Silverton. ; 'He left his own home some time Sunday afternoon without ' saying anything to his parents and walked to the Hunt home. He, at no time gave any intimation that he might run away and Thornley fears he may have met with an accident. Anyone hearing anything of him would phone J. E. Hosmer, Silver ton, collect or write Ruben Thorn- ley, Gervais, would be much ap preciated. When last seen, he was wearing overalls, a light shirt, a coat. He has brown hair and eyes and small for his age. WOMANS CLUB GUEST AT SAYLE'S HOME Talbot Mrs. Rosle Sayles and Miss, Thelma Gunn entertained the members of the Talbot Woman's club Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Sayles near Talbot. The house was attractively decor ated in keeping of St. Patrick's day. Roll call was responded to by givling favorite flowers and their culture. After the short business meeting games furnished by the hostesses were much enjoyed Prizes were won by Mrs. Claude Johnson and Miss Rose Kieper. A St. Patrick's lunch was erved by the hostesses. Those present were Mrs. Claude Johnson, Mrs. John Calavan, Mrs. Delmar Davidson, Mrs. George Potts, Mrs. David Turnldge, Mrs. E. J. Freeman, Mrs. Albert David son, Mrs. David Jacobson, Mrs. D. E. Cummlngs entertained re cently with a dinner at her home In honor of her sister, Mrs. Julia Durant's birthday. Those who spent the day were the honor guest, Mrs. Julia Durant, another sister, Mrs. John Thomas and son Harold and granddaughter, Beverly Ann Mad sen, of Salem, Mrs. M. Garner, Mrs. Wm. P. Davis, who is working at Grand Ronde spent Sunday with his fam ily, returning to Grand Rronde in the ovening. Misses Olga and Lulu Garner en tertained with a dinner Tuesday evening in honor of their mother's birthday. Covers were placed for the honor guest, Mrs. M. Garner, "Grandpa" Garner, Mr. and Mrs. George Sherman, Ralph Cox, Alvln, Rachel, Florence Garner and the hostesses, Olga and Lulu Garner. MEHAMA MLss Anna Stout, who has been In Salem and Corvallls for the last two months, spent the week end at home, but left again for Salem, where she wlU remain for a couple of weeks. Miss Stout Is a nurse and doesn't find much time to spend at home, Laton Davis and Elton Bond spent their week end at their home In North Santlam. Arthur Olson has returned home after visiting a couple of weeks In Portland and Vancouver. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Todd and family spent the week end In Sa lem and In Stayton at the home of Mrs. Tood's mother Mrs. Albert . Prank. Mr. Smuck and Leslie Squesle of Salem were recent visitors at the home of Mr. Bmuck's daughter, Mr. nd Mrs. Clyde Todd. Ernest Kubln and Wilson Steven Bon made a business trip to Port land Saturday returning the same day. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Prost who have been making their home at the Sil verton Logging Co, camp, are now located in the Mulkcy house, re cently vacated by the Helfrlsh family. MOM EXPLOSIVE DAUGHTER INVITED TO BIG INITIATION Mt. Angel The Catholic Daugh ters of America have recevicd an invitation from the C. D. of A. Court Multnomah, - Portland, - to take their candidates to Portland for a Joint initiation, which will be held there soon. The local Court will decide at the special meeting Monday evening, whether they will accept this invi tation, or have their own initiation here next month. A large number of candidates, have . already been signed up. ... SKUBAL FUNERAL RITES FROM SCIO . Scio Funeral services for James Subal, 70. who died in the Albany hospital Friday morning following a brief illness from pneumonia, were held at the Scio Bohemian hall and the remains were deposit ed in a vault In the Portland crem atorium. The N. C. Lowe Funeral Home had charge. Survivors of the immediate fam ily are the widow and a son, V. L. Skubal, in Scio; a second son, R. L. Skubal, and a daughter, Mrs. Henry Prachejl, Jennings, Kan.; a daugh ter, Mrs. Fred Petrasck, Long Beach, Cal., and 12 grandchildren. Deceased was a native or Czecho slovakia and came with his parents to the united states when ne was eight years of age. He was reared In Wisconsin, but later lived in Nebraska and Kansas, coming from the latter state to Scio in July, 1927. He was a member of the Z. C. B. J. society and generally known as a gooa citizen. Skubal attended the funeral or the late Charles Tucek in Portland, and although in normal health at that time, he selected a vault for his own resting place. CHURCH PREPARING FOR EASTER RITES Woodburn A potluck supper will be served In the basement of the Presbyterian church on Thursday evening at 6:30 o clock to which all in any way affiliated with the church are Invited. Matters of In terest to the church will be dis cussed and a social hour will follow. Special preparations are being made for Easter services. At the Woodburn church the program by the Sunday school will take place at 10 o'clock and at the church serv ice special Easter music will be ren dered preceding the sermon. The Bethel program will take place In the evening, On next Sunday morning Rev. Hanson will present tne iiith in the series of sermons on "Knowing aod and the Lord's Supper will be ob served following the sermon. Miss Fern wadsworth will sing "Bear ing His Cross." HAZEL GREEN Joseph Bennett, who has been seriously 111 with pneumonia, is now able to returned to school. Waldo Gilbert, who has been 111 for several weeks, returned to his classes Monday. Miss Helen Davis and Violet Van Cleave attended the girls' cooking and sewing club conference held in Salem last Friday. The many friends of Mrs. Marlon Buell of Hayesvllle will bo inter ested to hear of her slow recovery from her recent illness. FABRIQUES HAVE GUESTS North Santlam Lyle Cobb, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Huddleston of Wlllamlna spent Saturday night with Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Fabrlque. Mr. Cobb made use of his newly purchased truck to move his piano from the Fabrlque home to his home at Wlllamlna. BOARD WILL MEET Scio A meeting of the Scio school board Is scheduled for Friday evening of this week. Routine busi ness and teachers' applications will be among the business to be con sidered. ELSINORE SATURDAY SEASON'S GREATEST "TALKIE" PASSION WEEK SERVICES ARE TO BE OFFERED Woodburn Plans have been per fected for Passion Week services by the various churches of the city, beginning Monday evening and cov tinning until Friday. The en tertaining church will preside at each service and furnish' special music for the evening. The schedule has been arranged as follows: Monday, March 25, Free Methodist church with Rev. H. L. Orations of Gervais as speaker. Tuesday, March 26, Church of God, with Rev. W. T. Klotzbach as speaker. Wednesday, March 37, Christian church with a speaker from the Church of God. Thursday, March 28, Presbyterian church. Rev. A. J. Neuield, speak ing. Friday. March 29, Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. Henry G. Hanson, speaker. Services will begin at 7:30 each evening. All are urged to attend these meetings. LIBERTY RESIDENTS HEAR FINE PROGRAM Liberty. The following St. Pat rick's day entertainment was given at Liberty hall, under the direction of the Liberty Drama club: Remarks on life and inliuence or St. Patrick, by Harlan Judd; song, by Lola Dasch and club chorus song, by Dorothy Coffey and chorus; comic Irish dialect song by Mr. Judd; song by Mrs. Ersklne Hub bard; eight members of the club gave an Irish jig in costume; song by Ernest Lehman; play, "An Irish Alibi, characters, Dorothy Judd, Jeanettc Dasch, Jean Cruthers; an Irish dance given by Lola Dasch and Barbara Scotthoeffer; song by Celia Schottheoffer; song by Leland scott and chorus; William Mean- christ gave Irish songs and played nis Engiisn concertina he gave a de scription of conditions in this part of the country 30 years ago and en tertainments at that time. TALBOT Miss Grace Harding of Corvallls visited over the week end with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Freeman Walter and Arlie Davidson, of Oregon City spent Sunday visit ing with their brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Albert David son. Walter Davidson is foreman dh the log boom at the Oregon City paper mills. J. F. vanderpool of near Has- klns visited recently with his cous ins, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Davidson. Vanderpool owns a large farm and timber claims near Haskins. Mrs. Eva Wintermantel is again able to be out. Mrs. N. H. Doty, who has been 111 for some time. Is reported to be improved. Gaynell Cole, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Cole who has been ill with pneumonia, Is much improved. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Davidson and Mr. and Mrs. Delmar David son attended the minstrel which was put on by the Evangelical church of Albany at Morning, Star grange. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bryant of Salem, Mrs. Charles Allen of As toria and Miss Maxlne Blalre of Vancouver were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Davidson at their, home near here Sunday, J Miss Elda Reese of Jefferson visited at the home of her aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. Dave Ja cobson over the week end. Miss Reese Is a teacher In the Jeffer son school. The Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Johnson, who has been ill for the past few weeks, Is reported to be much improved. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Weidman of Scio viskted with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs. Jake Gilmour Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Gilmour motored to Portland to visit their brother-in-law, Mr. Larsen, who Is quite ill at the Veterans' hospital. EASTER PROGRAMS AWAITING TURNER Turner The Easter urograms at the Methodist Episcopal and Chris tian churches in Turner have been outlined and the young people are ousuy practising lor the sacred event; Both churches will have I beautiful Eastertime pageant, spe cial music, choir numbers, readinas. solos, and other sacred numbers for the day. At the Christian church there will be etereoptlcan pictures in the evening. Rev. Grace Driver of the Methodist Episcopal church and Rev. Earl Confer, pastor of the Christian church will both deliver special Easter messages to their congregations. AURORA CLUB WOMEN GUESTS AT STONERS Aurora The Aurora Woman's club met Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Ben Stoner with Mrs. A. L. Strickland assisting hostess. There was a large attendance and the music was furnished by Mrs, Stoner and Mrs. Strickland. Mrs. J. W. Sadler gave an interesting talk on "The West Indies" and Mrs. Edna Schwab also gave an interesting paper on "New Mexico, Santa Fe and the Indians." Guests of the club were Mrs. Dr. Riley of Hubbard and Mrs. Fred Wagner, Mrs. Galbreath, Mrs. Dorothy Grow, and Mrs. Mit chell of Aurora. Delightful refresh ments were, served by the hostesses. NORTH SANTIAM Mrs. Kester and son Clarence Clarence spent Saturday and Sun day with Mr. and Mrs. Ben Brown ing, Mrs. Kester s son Is a student at the University of Oregon at Eu gene. I. R. Hammer Is overseeing the house that is being built for Mr. Frank Scofield. Mr. and Mrs. I. R. Hammer went to see Mrs. Hammer's brother, Everett Condlt at the Salem hos pital. Mr. Condlt had an opera tion on nis tnroat. Miss Winifred Davis, who has been ill at her parent's home with heart trouble is greatly Improved and Is now able to be out and around again. Miss Opal Tripp was absent from school Monday. The Sunday school Is now begin ning on their program for Easter. Burnett, 65, es caped without a scratch, Tuesday when his car iras struck by an Ore gon Electric train at the crossing on the road leading from the Pa cific highway to the NebergaU pacKing pianc The automobile was overturned, when It caught on one of the steps oi one oi tne coacnes and was com pletely demolished. Burnett was thrown free of the car as it over turned. Defective brakes did not stop the car and the front wheels were on the verge of going onto the rails when it was struck. Robert Burnett, Albany youth, grandson of Mr. Burnett met death in an accident on the Corvallls highway several weeks ago, CAMP WATCHMAN REPORTS BIG SHOW Silverton E. C. McLoughlln who has been watchman at Silver Falls Timber company camp since last November since which time he has not been to town until this week, left Wednesday morning for his ranch near Olympia, Wash., where he has a five year contract with the Western Union to get out tele phone and electric light poles for them. He states that fourteen feet, four inches of snow fell at the camp during the winter, seven feet at one time and that there Is now four feet of snow there. McLoughlln Is 74 years old, hale as a man of for ty, walked with his knap sacks eight mues through the snow, com ing down and works In the woods like a young man. MRS. PARKER HOST TO CLUB AT SCIO Scio Mrs. Clinton Parker was hostess to the "As You Like It" club at its recent meeting. Twenty mem bers responded to roll call. Hie rooms were attractively decorated with daffodils, potted plants and artificial flowers. Quiltiig was the main diversion of the afternoon. Refreshments were served following a business session, the hostess be ing assisted by Mrs. Ross Petit, Mrs. Earl Parker, Zoe Petit and Carlyle Parker; Guests for the afternoon were Mrs. George Gassner, Mrs. Earl Parker and Mrs. Eva Titus. Mrs. Lester Arnold received a pret ty birthday apron. Mrs. Ross Petit will entertain the club at her home on March 28. EOSEDALE The Rosedale school was closed because of the death of Mr. Bos track, father of the teachers, Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Thomas. A birthday party was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Camp bell in honor of their daughter, Margaret's ninth birthday. Those present were Esther Cammaek, Lois Barnes, Sooline Mores, May Glover, Velleda Trick, Margaret Beckley and Josephine Hadley.
