WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 1929 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL. SALEM. OREGON PAGE NINE observe flOW During the late fall and early winter months a number of manu facturers attempted to bring back the Norfolk Suit, once so popular with boys and their parents. Considerable propaganda was spread to force the Issue, but noth ing came of this leterrained drive to bring about a complete change In boys' outer apparel 1 For that reason the sack suit, which became the vogue several seasons back, will continue In pop ular accord. Of course, It will be noted that a radical change was sought for the reason that it would create a greater demand for boys' clothes. SATISFIED WITH STYLES Bnt sonny and mother and father apparently are satisfied with the suit models of recent years and that means the two and three-button styles, which were favored since 1927, will remain the modes for this spring and summer. Just what next fall will usher in is problematical at this writing. While style changes are compara tively minor most emphasis will be placed on color. These will be In a range from medium dark to medium light. Not too light as in other sea sons because cleaning bills ran too high and the youngster often Is not thoughtful about that phase of wearing clothes. RANGE OF COLORS Casslmeres and twists, some che viots and tweeds, will be favored largely In fabrics, Among the pat terns will be diamond weaves and herringbones. Various shades of brown will be in good taste. These, of course, will be in the lighter shades through all the tones down to reddish brown. Golf pants will accompany all suits for youngsters of 8 to 13, while from M to 18 the long trousers will be worn. The larger number of styles will show the two-button effects, while there also will be three-button models and a smat tering of double-breasted styles, chiefly In blues . THREE-BUTTON TOPCOATS As for Topcoats the three-button model will get the largest play and the colors will offer a wide range from tans to the darker shades. They are making some topcoats In camel hair cloth following the styles of men and young men. Naturally there win be many out fits with the odd knickers In plus four styles in combination with sweaters. The youngster has taken kindly to this style because he Is free in his movements and the sale of these combinations will be ex ceedingly large. (0TtUTCIffy and Hathmom By MAIUOKIE HOWE DIXON There seems to be a most spirited race on between the bathroom and i the kitchen. First the bath fixtures appear in delicate tints, then the kitchen sink retaliates with color and the kitchen range as well. Brighter, more dashing patterns, appear In the shower curtains for the bath. Very well, say3 the kitch en. All the pots and pans will wear colored enamel and all be differ ent, too. The bath with Itff lovely walls In laid with tiles is a thing of beau ty. The kitchen grows more charm ing every day. For a while the sani tary side of these rooms seemed stressed, only white, or at most blue white, would do. Somewhere along the way the discovery has been made that pale peach porcelain is ns sanitary as white. What a dif ference to us allt COLOR SCHEME IN BATHROOM Whether the bath be as small as It very well can be, and yet con tain the usual fixtures, or as spaci ous as an art gallery, It now con siders a definite color scheme to start with. After all, some of the ads for bath rooms do make you think of art galleries. One can imagine titles for the "Authentic tiled niche from an old Moorish castle," or "Boudoir of Madam Pompadour in her late twenties." In one of these regal apartments, the only thing that makes you feel sure that it really has plumbing- so well are all hard facts concealed the appearance of a drain pipe under the wash bowl. Perhaps it was the wash bowl that decided the color scheme. Imagine a wash stand of black, and gold marble, with brass water fau cets, neriod legs of brass, a framed mirror set in the wall above, with an open shelf at its base for lovely crystal bottles. Tall slim cabinets are recessed and shut their contents from view with decorated panels. FLOWERED CURTAIN FABRICS In this most unusual bath, flow ered water-proof fubric is used for shower curtains and at the win dows. To their golden light, add black and gold marble floor, a pair of lacquered commodes, a tall wide wall mirror and a tiled bath re cessand Cleopatra herself would sigh with envy. What do you think the Moors of Granada would think of a tiled bath recess using their characteristic blue and green tiles for its decoration? We nro not prepared to state whether they would regard it as ele vation, or desecration. One of these niches, not content with artistic til ing for background, must needs carry on with wash bowl, tub and so on of pale green porcelain. OTHER BATHROOM FIXINGS To "the man of the street" liv ing in every day apartment oi bunealow. where white still pre dominates in the fixtures of the bath, these gay color schemes may seem to be out of reach. Much col or may be very attractively used, however. A set of bath bottles in poach or green may be purchased. One of the new bath cabinets has a graceful mlTor for its door. As it swings open the neat shelves are revealed. Then there are shower curtains of bright rubberized fabric. Laven der on green, with ruyies oi green, r-akes one gay set. on ciowi glazed chintz can be used for drapes or for the roller shades. Borne peo ple admit that they like to read In the tub, and would prefer to have their books bound in oil cloth. Per haps a library shelf might be add ed. MATCHING IN WASH CLOTHS Then, of course, there can be ever so much color in the face and bath towels. These And the wash cloths can be carefully matched in they can just play they are a rau bow. It is our private opinion that col orful kitchens began it. Several years ago, bright gingham curtains were used, and gradually the sad dark brown dingy kitchens of the 80 c and 90s have been replaced with light clean-looking tones that Is, since we have recovered from the cold blue and white that was the last word in sanitation at one time. COLOR IN OIL CLOTHS Besides color in pots and pans, In the oil cloth lining our shelves, be sides tinted porcelain sinks and pas- For the juvenile the reefer coats color or they can harmonize, or of blue cheviot with the naval em- for rest as well. blem, double-breasted effect and brass buttons promises to win the greatest number of admirers. I tel stoves, there are even new col-, ors In the metals to add to the Joy of the work In the kitchen. Chrom ium is perhaps the chiefest of these. In one of the new waterless cook-: era, chromium Is used for the stand that holds the top pans. Chromium appears in the shining faucets at the sink. It is lurtner used in uai ware, in percolators, waffle irons, and so on. These latter are electric fixtures. This metal is supposed to have the merit of retaining Its lus tre under continuous use. Many are already using a tine aluminum and copper alloy in their flat ware that has the smooth love ly texture of gold. It is now made In service plates, beakers; candlesticks, compotes and so on. INVENTIONS FOR WIVES Among the various Inventions to assist the housewife are two de serving special mention. One of these is a commodious sink that "does almost everything," and the other is a motor combination, "that does all the other things." The sink has a dish washer on one side and a clothes washer on the other. However, there will still be a few duties for the housewife. She will have to place the dishes in the washer and take them out and put them away.. But there, why should one poke fun at the state ment that it "does almost every thing"? The clothes washer Is a small one and is intended for the smaller, lighter, and finer things. In the center portion is a deep sink with a special holder for catching debris from vegetables, etc., that may be lifted out and cleaned. Un derneath the sink are two contain ers that swing out. One Is for brushes and cleaning fluids. The other is a garbage container to keep the unsightly drainer out of sight. NEED FOR INCINERATOR The disposal of garbage has ever been a problem. The mention of it above reminds us that there is very good incinerator that may be installed in the basement. It is gas fired and is planned to do away with odors and unsanitary disposal arrangements. The other kitchen help that "does everything else" is an electric fix ture that enables one to use a mo tor for many hand operations. Tills piece of equipment can be used for turning the ice cream freezer, for slicing vegetables, for grinding meat, for stirring batter or mayon naise, or to grind coffee. There is no question about the motor-driven appliance saving much of the house-wife's time and energy. And what shall she do with the energy thus saved? You ask her. She will need it all In the present busy world, and will need time on Footwear 5 Footwear . for Boys and Girls HE grace of artistic draperies that are the vogue for spring, as well as the new and surpassingly beautiful colorings, is reflected in Walk-Over Footwear.
