SLIGHT INCREASE LINN ENROLLMENT Albany Linn county's school population has made a growth of nine during the past year, accord ing to figures obtained from Mrs. Edna Oeer, county school superin tendent. The present total registra tion of school children Is 7,52s, as compared with 5,517 a year ago. Of the present number S.TO7 are boys and 3,729 are girls. A year ago the boys out-numbered the girls by 170. EPISCOPAL GUILD GUEST AT NOLANS Woodburn Mia. On Tuesday evening the Buchanon 's entertained again at their home in honor of their niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Jennings, who will soon return to their home in Michigan. ROYAL ARCHIBALD DIES IN ARKANSAS Albany Word was received in Al bany Tuesday of the death of Royal W. Archibald at his home in Little Rock, Ark, Monday night. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Archibald of Albany, having been born here February 37, 1902. Fun eral services will be held when his mother and widow arrive here from Arkansas, with the body. He was graduated from Oregon State college in 1824 and was a World War veteran. He was also a member of the Albany Masonic lodge. He Is survived by his parents, his widow, a daughter, a sister and five brothers. LAWRENCE TO FACE CHARGE OF FORGERY Albany Jack L. Lawrence, Leb anon, was returned to Umatilla county Tuesday by officers of that county to answer to charges of forg ery. Lawrence is said to have ad mitted passing worthless checks, but Sheriff Tom Gurdane said a charge of forgery would be prefer red. Lawrence came to Lebanon from Umatilla county in Deoember and has been working for the Slate Construction company. He has a wife and six small children. GERVAIS Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Hand and son Gall were In Gervals Friday, call ing on old acquaintances. Mr. Hand was a former owner of the Gervais drug store but has lived the past ten years in Eugene and only recently purchased a drug store there. Several are confined to their homes with the prevailing sickness. Among them is Mrs. Summer Ste vens. UNION HILL Mr. and Mrs, Henry Peters were visiting in Stayton Saturday. Mrs. Potroff's son, Emery Harris has been visiting at his home. The Orange members of Union Hill held their initiation last Sat urday evening at the hall and a number of people were Initiated. Elmer Rabens Is now employed in a logging camp. He has been home for some time. Mr. and Mrs. BUI Tato and Mrs. Winnie Tate were Stayton callers Saturday. Mrs. Mary Mollett and Miss Bertha Mollett were visitors at the Stayton high scnool Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hurt were surprised when a number of their friends gathered at their home last Thursday evening. The evening was spent playing cards and various games. Lunch was served at a late hour. Those entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy King last Wed nesday night were Aloph Heater and son, Maurice, Hugh Hurt and C. J. Hunt and family. Mr. and Mrs. Jap Phillips had as their guests Sunday, Mr, and Mrs. Albert Cooly. ALBANY RESTAURANT SOLD Albany Henry Fromm and J. B. Prof. E. H. Tobte reported $25.69 In the treas ury. President Crab tree appointed a committee of Uiree to select the cast for the play to be given the second week In April, Mrs. Bessie, Karinek, Mrs. Maud Beauchamp and Mrs. Helen Tate. A committee of three, consisting of Mrs. Clif ford Stayton, Mrs. Hurley Champ and Coach Guy Mauney were se lected to judge the "Safety First" posters that had been placed on the walls around the room. Mrs. Eglestoti's room received the flag for the coming month. Mrs. H. t, Tobie gave a report of Mr, and Mrs, Robert Wood and Mr. and Mrs. Toble visiting the Rocky Point school to attend the last meeting at the place and spoke very highly of the new building and good pro gram. A P.-T. A. song led by Miss Goode was sung by the audience. Coach Guy Mauney .spoke 10 mln unltes on "Safety First", reading some statistics from the Portland police department. Dr. Vernon A. Douglas, county health officer, sub stituted for Dr. Es telle Ford War ner and gave a talk on health meth olds. Miss Patsy Mayo gave a violin solo, with her mother at the piano. Election of new officers will be held at the next meeting and visit ors from the districts sending chil dren here on bus lines will be In vited. A teachers' institute wilt be held here April 6. Refreshments were served. CHAMBER PROGRAM IS GIVEN BY WOMEN Albany Members of the Albany Business and Professional Women's club will conduct the program at the meeting of the Albany chamber of commerce Wednesday, it was an nounced by Leonard E. Gilkey, sec retary of the chamber. The club was invited to give the program during national business women's week. SHAW Mr. and Mrs. Everett Service of Portland visited here over the week end with Mrs. service's father, Mr. Frank Simpson. Valeria Amort, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Amort, Jr., who had a bad attack of pneumonia, has been removed from the Salem Gen eral hospital to her home here. A number of the Shaw people patronized the trap shooting at Stayton. In the group were Archie Germond, who won several matches, Irvie Battels, who -also did very well at the traps, George Berg, Ed Amort, Herman Bartels and Claude Camiegie. SCOTTS MILLS Mr. and Mrs. Carl Millard and son attended the County Sunday School convention held at Sllverton the latter part of last week. Mrs. Addle Smith, who -has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. O, H. Brougher of Salem, the past two weeks, returned home Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Adkins of this place, who have spent the winter in Portland, returned here Friday where they visited their daughter, Mrs. Bert Scott, until Sunday eve ning when they left for Salem where they will make their home with their youngest daughter, Mrs. Estella Thomas. SHADOW, PIE SOCIAL SLATED AT BROOKS BrooksMrs. John Dunlavy will entertain, the Brooks Community club Thursday afternoon at her home at Brooks. Plans will be com pleted for the free program and shadow pie social which will be held on Friday evening in the Brooks public school building. The program will consist or a brass quartette by the Hubbard Community band, a pageant, "Cin derella," by 20 small children; a one-act dialogue, "Auction Mad," by club members; songs, readings and saxophone and piano music, and a two-act play, "Awiul Boots," by club members will also be present ed. . All ladies are being asked to bring pie, shadows will be sold at the close of the program and free cof fee will be served with the pie. Everybody welcome. NEW ROAD PROGRAM SLATED FOR LINN GO. AlbanyMembers of the Linn county court, state and county en gineers, have not announced which proposed route between Jordan and Lyons they will favor, following an inspection tour into that district the fore part of the week. Several miles of market road are to be built In that section, it Is understood. A number of county road im provements are slated for' the spring months, according ta the court. ST. PAUL Mr. and Mrs. Cowlitx and two children and Fred B rents no were home Wednesday to visit their mo ther, -who has been ill for the past two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Cowlitz are from Chehalls, Wash. PLAN IMPROVEMENT OF OLDJJEMETERY Woodburn Many improvements are contemplated at Belle Passi cemetery during the spring and summer by the cemetery board. Plans are under way to put the old well In proper shape or dig a new deep well and evergreen trees will be planted along the south side ot the cemetery. A price lias been of fered for the strip of grove on the west side of the cemetery, which be longs to John Kirsch and If this Is not accepted nd the trees are cut down, a high fence will be built along that line and covered with climbing vines. It was also decided to offer for sale a wedged shaped piece of land on the east side. HOPMERE Mrs. Elma Brazen of Twin Falls. Idaho, is making an extended visit to her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lowry, at Hopmere. Mrs. Rldlnger and grand nephew, Vernon Barnlclc, have gone to Tilla mook to stay with his sister, the former Mrs. William Hoover of Brooks, who Is now 111 with asthma at her Tillamook home.
