OREGON PAGE SEVEN DAYTON DEBATE GROUP SECOND; GRESHAM LEADS Dayton The second of the .state wide debates on the question: "Re solved that. The debenture plan for the relief of agriculture as advo cated by the national grange should be adepted by the United State: congress," was debated at the three high schools included in the north Willamette valley districts Monday evening. ' The Dayton pupils taking the negative side of the question at Grcsham were Misses Esther Stout en burg and Lillian Chalee with William Magnus substitute. Grcs ham high school won the nesative side.- The Dayton pupils who took the affirmative side with McMinnvillc at Dayton made 1200 points and McMinnville received 1291 paints. In the triangle Grcsham won first, Dayton second and McMinn ville third place. Three Judges were appointed to count points and in that way tt will be decided which teams shall debate in district meets. NEW SEWING GLUS FORMED NEAR SCIG Scio A sewing club was organ Insed at a meeting a few days ago at the home of Mrs. Virgil Wcddie, district No. 23, near Scio. The fol lowing officers were elected: Mrs Tim Kelly, president; Mrs. Bob Kelly, vice-president; Miss Margaret Densmore, secretary-treasurer. Following the bussiness ses sion dainty lunch was served by the hostess, asssiled by Mrs. Melviu Epley and Margaret Densmore. Those present at the meeting were Mrs. Virgil Weddle, Miss Helen Kins, Miss Margaret Dens more, Miss Llla Tledman, Mrs. Welher Watkins, Mrs. Tim Kelly, Mrs. Bob Kelly, Mrs. Bud Watten barger. Mrs. Andy Densmore, Mrs. Scott Hawk, Mrs. Archie McRcae, Mrs. Lillie Wilson, Mrs. Watt-an-berger and daughter Melba, Mrs. Henry Rothroclc and daughter,, Maud. GATES IMPROVEMENT CLUB PLANS SEASON Gates The regular meeting of the Ladtes Improvement club had an attendance of 25 women. Roll call was responded to by Interest ing anecdotes from the lives of Washington and Lincoln and the recalling of girlhood Valentines and verses thereon. Plans were made for two future " social events. Mrs. A. B. Horner, Mrs. Tilman Raines and Mrs. Ed. Davis were appointed on a com mittee to assist Mrs. Milsnp In ar ranging for a music recital to be held at Gates, proceeds going to the Improvement club. The date to be arranged later. A St. Patrick's day card party Is the second event planned under the guidance of a committee consisting of Mrs. Herbert Shroeder, Mrs. Gerald Heath and Mrs. Ed Collins. After the business meeting refresh ments were served by the hostesses, Mrs. P. W. Jones, Mrs. H. L. Carry sot, Mrs. Carl Knutson and Mrs. Harry Keiser. Much appreciation was expressed for the two long tab les donated by Mr. Baker of the Hammond company store at Mill City also to Sanford Bassett for bringing the tables up from Mill City. After the lunch the club ad journed until the March meeting. pianoWbenefit for salem heights Salem Heights Little faces have been eugerly scanning the caleu dar and anxious children have been anticipating Thursday evening, when the Salem Heights school plans an entertainment to add to their piano fund. Teachers and pupils have been working faithfully and long to de velop the program which will be presented in the community hall, Thursday evening. A small admis sion Is to be charged. Following is the program: Song. 'Little George Washing ton." Primary boys. "Sleeping Beauty," primary grades directed by Mrs. Ethel McCoy. "Seeks, Sir," A little play by third and fourth grades, directed by Mrs. Harriett Zcsel. "Uncle Sam's Visit," a musical play by the boys and girls or the four upper grades, directed by Mrs. Agnes Booth and Mrs, Cecile Wie-gand. SERVICES ARE LISTED FOR SCIO CHURCHES Scio Rev. J. Y. Stewart of Al bany will preach at the Christian church in Scio Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock. The subject of the sermon will be, "Prayer." Service at Mt. Pleasant will be at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. At the Baptist church Rev. Henry Alters will preach on the subject, "The rive Talons," In the morning and at 7:30 o'clock in the evening the teax will be "The Lord is My Refuge," NUSOMS AKE HOME Waconda Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Nusom and their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nusom and small daughter, Sheverly Jean Nu som who have been in Oakland, California for several months, have arrived home. Little Sheverly Jean Nusom became ill en route home and the party had to lay over sev eral days at' different places until she became able to travel. As soon as they reached home a physician was called and the illness of the lit tle girl was diagnosed as intestinal influenza and whooping cough. BROTHER TAKEN ILL Silverton. E. K. Kaufman, who resides two miles out of town, was called to Long Beach, Wasfr, be cause of the serious Illness of his brother who is suffering with heart trouble. Kauiman left here Wed nesday noon. Campbell will bo held from the Keeney chapel Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. J. Henry 'i'humas ol the Episcopalian church of Klamath FalU will conduct the funeral serv ice after which interment will be made In the Knights of Pythias' cemetery at Monmouth. Dr. Campbell was a practicing physician In Klamath Falls and with the Canadian expeditionary forces In the world war. He was born In Ontario, Canada, and grad uated from Trinity college and the medical college of Toronto uni versity. He studied in Edinburgh. New York. London and Uie Mayo clinics. For distinguished service durlni the world war, as regimental sur geon he was decorated by the Bel gian and English governmentals and received tho French Croix de Guerre. He was" gassed while in action. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Fryer Campbell, daughter of J. T. Fryer of this city, who will accoinpany the body hens for bur ial. , made no plea, remaining mute while Ais attorney. Herbert O. Bry- son, interposed a written plea. The plea alleges that Wliuns at tne time of the slaying of Brooks was insane and mentally irresponsible, that tho Insanity of Wilklns contin ues as to any matter involving the person of Brooks, but as to all other mutters he is now mentally responsible. LADIES AID MEETS Scio The February monthly business and social meeting of the Ladies' Aid society of the Chris tian church was held at the home of Mrs. O. L. Flanagan, whose birth anniversary occurred on that day. Following the regular order of business the afternoon was spent in cutting and sewing quilt blocks. Lunch was served by the 'hostess, assisted by her daughter, Mrs. Dolly Young and Miss Rose Young.
