associated with a Scot. Mr. Guth
rie's antecendents were Scotsmen.
Nevertheless he always is adamant
when the matter ot describing at
tractions Is concerned. "Sorrell and
Bon" begins Its tlve day run at the

Mr. Guthrie, between comments,
paused and surveyed the Colorado

Salem could not get enough of
the eight Victor artists in two days
so Mr. Guthrie Is holding them
again today. Each one of the art
ists, whom you have heard on your
phonograph, receives as much
money as did the violin artist, Ru
blnl. Last night the house was
packed, and many are expected
again to see the artists tonight.
DEATHS EXCEED
BIRTHS, COUNTY
DURING MONTH
Seventeen more deaths than
felrths occurred in Marion county
during January, according to the
report given at the meeting of the
Marion county health unit at noon
today, by Dr. Vernon A. Douglas,
county health officer. This la
unusual record for usually, in Mar
lon county records, the births ex
ceed the number of deaths or near
ly equal the death total. A total
of 86 deaths were reported last
month as compared with 77 deaths
In December. In January a year
ago there were 91 deaths.
A total of 79 births Including
three stillbirths were reported dur
ing January as compared to 84
births the previous month. In Jan
uary 1927, there were 83 births, In
December the births exceeded the
deaths by seven. Of the total num-J
ber of births 45 were male and 31
female. Parents of 24 of the new
babies reside in Salem.
A decided jump upward in the
number of communicable diseases
was also reported for January of
this year. In December only 81
communicable disease coses were re
ported as compared with 182 In
January. In January a year ago
there were only 69. This Increase,
lays Dr. Douglas, was almost entire
ly due to the measle epidemic. Be
cause of the extreme contagiousness
of measles, the management of an
epidemic of this disease resolves
Itself Into trying to prevent as many
complications and deaths as possi
ble by encouraging early and ade
quate treatment.
A decrease of scarlet fever and a
decrease of diphtheria were reported
tor January. One case of Infantile
paralysis won reported and the child
died, mis was we omy aeain so
for in the infantile paralysis epi
demic in Marlon county.
During January a total of 335
vaccinations, 488 Immunizations
against diphtheria and 93 Shlck
tests were done at the county health
unit office.
Dr. Douglas says that excepting
the measles epidemic the general
health of the school population ap
pears to be better than it was a
year ago.
STOP BARBECUE
IN RESIDENCE

Charles Maxwell, Salem barbe
cued meat vender, apparently has
played In hard luck In preparing a
building in Highway addition, Holly
wood, as an elaborate barbecue
stand. Although there Is some dis
pute about It, It appears that a
barbecue stand at the place where
Maxwell has his building Is in viola
tion of the zoning ordinance.
Notwithstanding warnings that
were sent by City Attorney Williams
to the contractor, J. H. Ellis, and the
man who got the building permit,
N. W. Ellis, that such a place of
business would be a violation of the
ordinance, they went ahead anyway.
Trie permit called for a residence.
Williams' warning was sent before
the building was erected. Sometime
during the proceedings the property
was sold to Maxwell.
The zoning commission, reporting
on the matter last night, recom
mended that, if the petition of pro
testers, were correct In the assertion
that an eating place was to be es
tablished, action be taken to prevent
it. li. P. Campbell, chairman of the
zoning commission, explained that
there was no violation of the ordin
ance unless the building is put to
that use. This report was adopted.
Later in the meeting Alderman
Townsend moved that action be
taken. This failed to carry, Alder
man Patton insisting that some In
vestigation be made.
Townsend 's motion brought Max
well himself to his feet. He con
tended that he had acted in good
faith, that he was not in the zone
barring eating houses, and that he
wanted to build the establishment
for the employment of his daughters
when they graduate from high
school.
Alderman Patton described the
building as an attractive stucco
structure. If It Is in the restricted
zone it could still be used as a din
ing place if there were no street en
trance to the dining room, but It Is
not planned this way.

DIPHTHERIA IS
BIG SUCGESS
The campaign against diphtheria
In Marlon county w&s one of the
principal activities of the Marlon
county health unit during 1927, ac
cording to the annual report com
pleted and given out today. Tne
campaign was started In the sum
mer of 1926. During the past year
3,272 Individuals received toxln-antl-toxin,
the Immunization against
diphtheria. In 1925 thr3 were
nearly 200 cases of diphtheria in
Marion county and 18 deaths. In
1927 there were 44 cases and one
death.
A total of 1019 children were ex
amined by the county health unit In
conjunction with the honor roll
work during 1927. During the year
113 Infants and 150 pre-school ane
children were examined at the free
clinic.
One of the problems confronting
the county healtn unit during the
last year was the small outbreak of
typhoid In Salem. Tills was care-
luiiy investigated, says the report.
and it was found that the Infection
was from water borne through
the city mains which in turn had
probably become contaminated by
defective check valves. Since that
time close watch has been made of
the water supply and steps have
been taken to eliminate the danger
oi cneck valves.
From October 1, 1027 until Janu
ary 1 of this year a total of 11 coses
of Infantile paralysis were reported
in Marlon countu with one death
from a case which originated In
Washington.
A small pox epidemic which start
ed at Chcmawa Indian school ap
peared in November. A total of 97
cases of small pox were reported for
the entire year. As a result of the
epidemic 1575 vaccinations were per
formed by the county health unit.
Plans for 1928 include closer
supervision of the milk and food
supplies and some plan whereby not
only auto camps, but the Industrial

Small epidemics of Oastro-intestlnal
and other diseases are common dur
ing the summer months, says the
annual report, especially in the
berry and hop picking camps. At
present these camps are inspected
by the state industrial welfare com
mission. During 1927 the county health!
unit quarantined 161 cases and re
leased 138. A total of 50 auto camp
Inspections were made and 30 visits
were madfe to the countl jail to diag
nose drunkenness and investigate
Injuries.

The number of traffic accidents in
Oregon decreased in 1927 as com
pared with 1926, the respective to
tals being 29,186 and 30,025, says the
annual report of T. A. Raffety, chief
state traffic Inspector. While the
number of fatalities increased from
99 in 1926 o 141 in 1927, the higher
number Is attributed mainly to a
more thorough method of checking
