ALTAR SOCIETY HAS FINE CARD PARTY Silverton, Jan. 13 Hie Ladles of the Altar society of the St Paul's church held a card party in their hall Wednesday evening. About 10 tables of cards was played and as many of bunco. Mrs. Kiesel and Father J. Scherbring won first prizes In the card games and Mrs. Houser consolation. In the bunco games Tony Marson and Mrs. John son won first. Mrs. Scherbring, Mrs. Domogalla and Mrs. Houser served lunch. The rest of the evening was spent in dancing. SUPPER ENJOYED Sclo, Jan. 13. The monthly cov ered dish supper of the Pythian Bister lodge was held In the hall Wednesday evening and was a very enjoyable affair. The committee for the evening was composed of Mrs. E. D. Myers. Mrs. J. S. Stlclm. Mrs. Clarence and Mrs. James Chromy Miss Ruth Lampkin was an addi tional guest WILL OPEN SHOP Hubbard, Jan. 13. John Friend, well-known barber at the Three in One confectionery has severed his business relations with that estab lishment and is planning on open ing a barber shop under his own management In the near future. Friend has been barber In the same place for many years and has gained a large circle of steady cus tomers all of whom are hoping that this shop may be opened In mis town. Jan. 13 The three members of the Forest Reserve lec tured and gave their two reels of movies in connection with the lec ture Thursday evening at the 8t Paul's church to both the children and adults, giving practically the same program that they gave In the high school and the pupils of thhe three public schools In three sec tions Monday afternoon. SANTIAM DISTRICT CONVENTION HELD Aumsvllle. Jan. 13. The Santtam district Sunday school convention was held at the Christian church here, with Rev. Conier, of the Tur ner Christian church reading the morning devotions and E. K. Bailey, evangelist, the principal speaker. A basket lunch was served at the Amos O. Davis high school at noon. Sunday schools of the district participated in the afternoon pro gram and included Mehama, North Santtam. Pleasant Point. Turner Methodist and the Stayton Baptist. Rev. Shaw, of the Stayton Chris lion church, led the devotions and Rev. Confer and Oscar Fiflet, of the Turner Christian church, gave a duet QUARTERLY MEETING FRUITLAND, SUNDAY Fruitland. Jan. 13 The third quarterly conference of the Fruit- land Evangelical church will be neia a', the church on Sunday evening beginning at 7:30 o'clock. Elder Lovell will preside and Rev. O. R. Stover will officiate. Communion will be held. The regular Sunday school ser vices at 10 o'clock in the morning but regular church services will be dispensed with. The public Is invited to attend" the conference In the evening. PUBLIC CEREMONIES - BY HUBBARD LODGES Hubbard. Jan. 13. The Odd Fellows and Rrbekahs held one of their family dinners this week. A large assembly of members and their families met In the downstairs dining room in the Odd Fellows hall. After the dinner both the Odd Fellows and the Rehekahs held short business sessions of their respective organizations. A public intuilation of officers of both groups followed. As executive officers for the ensu ing half year, Mrs. Ellen Carl for the Rebekahs and John Smolinsky for the Odd Fellows will preside. SVRI'KISE 31 KS. AI.I.EN Silverton. Jan. 13 Several ladies of Mrs. Reuben Allen's class walked into her home on East Main street and surprised her. It being her birthday. The hours were pleasantly spent and then a pot luck lunch was served. Mrs. Allen departed departed Wednesday morning on a business trip to Portland. CONSULT KPE( IALST Silverton, Jan. 13 W. E. East man wns taken to Portland by his son. L. C. Eastman Wednesday to consult a specialist as he has been In poor health for some months and quite HI since the middle of the past week. Mrs. Werschkul, a daugh ter of w. E. Eastman, who has been helping to care for her father re turned to her home In Portland with them. GUEST AT BENTLEVS Wood burn. Jan. 13 Mrs. Nellie M. Scatty Is visiting for an indefinite period at the home of her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Bentley. Mrs. Beatty has Just re turned from the Portland medical hospital where the has spent the past six weeks and is much Improved In health. She expects to make her home with her daughter until her strength is fully recovered. OFF FOR EUGENE Woodbum. Jan. 13. Students of Woodburn high school who left yes terday evening for Eugene to attend the nigh school conference were Miss Oertrude Shorey. Miss Elofse num. Rex oarrtaon and Maurice Bogard. TRAINER NURSE LEAVES Silverton, Jan. 13 Miss Ktnzel, trained nurse of Kansas, who has been employed at the hospital for several months, left for her home Wednesday and Miss Bygd of Ken- yon, Minnesota, has come to take her place. RETURN TO BEND Donald, Jan. 13 Mr. and Mrs. Emerson 8hafrr and children, who spent several weeks here with Mrs. Shafcr's parents, Mr, and Mrs. Ball ard, left for their home In Bend. going by way of the North Bank highway. MBS. DRAKE HOME Silverton. Jan. 13. Mrs. Lavlna Drake, widow of the late William Drake, of South Water street, has been ill the past few days, more mentally than physically, although she Is reported as having had sev eral sinking spells. She talks hardly any but looks Into space and seems to know but very few of her old time friends. Mrs. Kiscr of Klats kanle Is caring for her. SILVERTON HAS CONVENTION AT CHURCH SUNDAY Silverton, Jan. 13. The 8llverton district Sunday school convention will be beld at the Congregational church Sunday beginning with basket dinner at 12:30 o'clock. Mrs. A. J. VanCleave, president of the district, will have charge of the program. The convention theme Is "Beginning." The program for the day follows: Song service by the choir; devo tional:, by Rev. Gillanders and the business session. Mrs. Jones' class of the First Christian Sunday school will have the lesson story while the junior girls of the Monitor Sunday school will oner a story in song. Mrs. Wright's class of Marquam, will give a chart exercise. Rev. E. K. Bailey will speak and Selma Gordon offer a reading. Music will also be given by Dad's quartet and several numbers by the Scotts Mills Chris tian Sunday school. Selections by the Silverton Methodist Sunday school, the quartet and an address by Ronald C. Glover, of Salem, cent' plete the program. DISTRTcTCUNiC HELD AT GERVAIS Gervals. Jan. 13 One of the lan? est attendance of any clinic was held Thursday afternoon when 44 chil- dren were examined fo the honor roll. The Gervals health center draws from quite a large territory and chiloren from the Eldridge, Wa conda, Fairfield, Mahoney and Man ning school districts were examined. Dr. Brady of Salem was the ex amining physician with Miss Har rison, the nurse. Local ladles assist ing were Mrs. Sam Brown, Mrs. Sumner Stevens, Mrs. Leslie Colby, Mrs. G. J. Moison, Mrs. Charlie Moore, and Mrs. C. W. Cutsforth Only for the generosity of Mrs. B. J. J. Miller, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Ralph Haper who gave the use of their cars in transporting the children to and from the clinic only a small per cent of children would be able to attend the clinics. AMES IS QUITE ILL Hubbard, Jan: 13. W. Ames, the proprietor of Ames auto park who has been ill with intestinal flu for several weeks was removed to the Mount hospital In Oregcn City where he wa3 operated on. His trouble had developed Into acute appendicitis. After the operation he contracted pneumonia and Is re ported to be very ill. During his illness the work at the park has been in charge of Mrs. Ames, assisted by H. Trimble. DELZELL IS SPEAKER Aumsvllle. Jan. 13.v W. A. Del- rell. of Salem, was the principal speaker at the regular meeting of the Aumsvllle community club this week. The meeting was held In the school house with the ladles serv ing dinner at 6:30 o'clock. A short program and the addrets were of fered in the evening. SCHMIDT IN HOSPITAL Sublimitv. Fowler and daughter Josephine of Glen dive, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peters and children of Browns Val ley, Minnesota, visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cannard for several days. The party left Tuesday for Los Angeles where they will spend some time before return ing to their homes. DOWDS REPORT SON Gervals, Jan. 13 Dr. and Mrs. Hugh Dowd are receiving congrat ulations upon the arrival of a little son born Monday morning. This Is the second son of Mr. and Mrs, Dowd. Woodburn, Jan. 13 Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bentley of Portland are the parents of a baby daughter, Jean Mary, who arrived at their home on December 28 and weighed seven and one-half pounds. The Bentleys are well known In Woodburn where they formerly resided. LUTHERANS OF SILVERTON IN ANNUAL EVENT Silverton, Jan. 13 The annual meeting of the congregatiion of the Trinity Lutheran chcurcch was held Wednesday evening with an excep tionally large attendance. The fol lowing new members were taken In Reverend Sherwln, Carl Ellingson and family, Peter Vik and family, R. F. Rufcr and family and J. 'P. Larsen. A vjte of thanks was ex tended to tile officers of the past year for the splendid work done by them. The following officers were re-el ected for the coming year: Harold Larsen, board of trustees; M. C. Storruste, cemetery board; A. U Larsen, secretary; M. O. Hatteberg. treasurer; H. P. Hansen, financial secretary; J. P. Refsland, assistant financial secretary; M. C. Storruste, M. G. Gunderson (new), auditing committee: Ingeborg Goplerud, or- gainst; M. C. Thompson, Janitor. Reverend Foss was elected super intendent of the Sunday schools with full power to appoint his as sistants. Motions were made and carried to pay the organist (120 per year. It was decided to have a mission festival sometime in the future. The matter of providing additional parking space for cars at the church was left in the bands of the board of trustees who are to report their decision at theh next meeting. OFFICERS REELECTED BY WOODBURN BANKS Woodburn. Jan. 13. The annual meeting of the stockholders and di rectors of the First National Bank was held Tuesday and officers elect ed for the year as follows: President, Keith Powell; vice president, Eugene Courtney; cashier, c. J. Epsey; as sistant cashier, Miss Myrtle Fikan. Wednesday afternoon the annual meeting of the Bank of Woodburn directors and stockholders was held and election of officers resulted In the election of Keith Powell as president: Alice Bingham Powel as vice president: Eugene Courtney as cashier and Mrs. Bessie Keys as as sistant cashier. IS. Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Whitman were hosts to the dinner bridge club at their home on Settlemier avenue Wednesday evening. Dinner was served at 1:30 o'clock, the hostess being assisted by Mrs. F. W. Havemann were additional guests. GRANGE CLUB HAS ANNUAL ELECTION Turner, Jan. 13. The Woman's Work club of Surprise Orange met at the country home of Mrs. M. E. Townsend In the Colverdale district. The January clinic of the health demonstration was held at the school all day Wed nesday, Dr. Estil Brunk giving the mouth examination and Dr. Bradey assisted by Miss Beneta Stroud, the general examination. Also assisting were several of the high school girls. Miss Stroud, now in charge of this section of the district, Is replacing Mrs. Lydla King who formerly held this position. Dr. Bradey. recently of Boston, but temporarily In this county, took the place of Estelle Warner, the usual demonstration physician for this district. ANNUAL BALL HELD Mt. Angel, Jan. 13 The Knights of Columbus annual ball and card social held Tuesday evening In the scnooi auditorium was well attended The hall was nicely decorated for the occasion. Prizes for cards were awarded to Mrs. Hanauska of Wood- burn and John Werner of Wood-burn. PLAY IS SUCCESS Sublimity, Jan. 13 The second evening of the Dramatic club's play "The Brookdale Farm" drew another full house. The dramatic club In tends to give another play before very long. MINNESOTANS EXPECTED Silverton, Jan. 13 Mr. and Mrs. Tver Johnson and two children. Irene and Iver Junior, of Illuffton, Minn., will arrive within a few days to visit their son Clayton and wife, who will be remembered as Flossie Conlbear. They are at the present time visiting othc- children In Ev erett and Bellingham. Washington. BOREYIK FUNERAL RITES, SILVERTON Silverton. Jan. 13. Mrs. Berg Borevlk. who died at her home in Reedsport Sunday morning at 2:30, after an Illness of albumin poison ing since Friday noon, was born near Cooperstown, North Dakota, In 1901. When she was one and one half years old, the. with her parents came to Silverton. where she re sided until November 1625, when the Borevlks moved to Reedsport. She was united In marriage to Berg Borevlk In 1921 In 611verton. She leaves to mourn her loss, ber husband, two children. Wallace, six. and Barbara, one year old, her mothers, Mrs. Harris of Portland: two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Buell of Silverton and Mrs. Charles Ramb sey ol Valsetz, and one brother, Jens, of Portland. Mrs. Borevlk was burl ed from the Lutheran Emmanuel church, Rev. Brambo officiating, and was laid to rest In the Silverton cemetery. FORMER WOODBURN RESIDENT IS DEAD Woodbum. Jan. 13. Mrs. Llbbie Allen, widow of the late Newton Al len and a former resident of Wood burn, died at the home of her son Charles Allen at Eugene on Wednes day. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Episcopal church In this city on Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Interment will be In Belle Passl cemetery beside the grave of her husband. crutches. Cecil received bruise on bis toes while playing basket ball last Friday, causing an abcess, necessitating L-nstng.
