"We're not crossing any bridges until we get to them," said Roy. 'Better leave the case out of this." It was while they were eating In the county jail kitchen that the twins cast aside restraint and dis cussed more freely the events pre ceding their capture. It means only what I said that I wish my family might be spared the sorrow that that Is bound to that has arisen over our arrest" We lived in Hanging Rock, Ohio." said Ray, as he gulped bits of egg ana potatoes in tne county jau kit chen. "We worked in the Hanging Rock coal and. iron company. "we made many friends in the two years w were there. Intimate friends, you understand. Friends so intimate that they undoubtedly car ried with them a perfect mental pic ture of us. My hair was bleached, but that was not enough. me postoiiice at Hanging Rock is smalt Only a corner in a store There was a board. And the only poster on that board was that of us. It was inev itable that some day some intimate of ours would look at it, and our faces would flash through his mind and then nooeyi so we leit Hanging Rock, al though we hated to. "in Steubenville I worked In the Wheeling Steel corporation. Roy worked in the Bell mine." Roy interrupted. COULD NOT SEPARATE "Yes," he said. "Three hundred feet down and back three miles. They wouldn't look for me there." "Why didn't you fellows separ ate?" Roy was asked. - "We think so much of each other that we couldn't," the youth answer ed. "We knew they stood a better chance of catching us If we stayed together, but we Just couldn't part. I guess that's where we made our mistake." At this point Ray broke into the conversation. You know," he said, "they wouldn't have caught us at that, if they had given us a month longer. We had decided to stay in Ohio just two months more. The circular in the little nostofilce at Hanging kock was a constant menace to us. We had been there quite a long time and had made friends. Wo thought we might be recognized, we talked it over and decided to move. I didn't want to leave my wife and baby, so wo decided to stay two montns to give us time to prepare for moving. Three cr lour weens later mejr nniiehr. tis. "If it hadn't been for my wife and baby we wouldn't have been caught." IS KVfc.lt 1ULU wire Ray's wife Hazel is now only 17 year old. "No. I never wanted to do that. You know we were getting along so happily. It would have spoiled evervthliw to have told her. I real ly forgot that my real name was DeAutremont." Rav said that he first became ac quainted with his wife through her father, a timber cruiser in the Ohio hills. "He invited me over to his house," said Ray. "One day it was raining and we were not working In the woods. I went over and met Hazel. We started to go together. We went together about three months before we were married. "Hazel has the prettiest curls, I believe of any girl In Ohio. I am safe and conservative in saying that." When asked where he and Ray had gone when they left Oregon for the east, Ray looked at Roy, and they debated in lowered tones. Then Roy turned and shook his head. SAY TREATMENT FINE "I don't think we'll say anything about that," he said. "You see, we told the postal inspectors we would not say anything about that If they didn't want us to, and they've been awfully good to us. We won't say." Throughout the questioning, they constantly referred to the generous treatment accorded them by their guards. Ray resented a dispatch quoting him as saying when asked what his 17 year old wife would do, that "oh, she's good looking. She'll get along." "She is a good girl," he said. "A really good girl. Any one would be a cad to say such a thing about her." And Roy resented another quota tionone quoting him as saying to arresting officers that "I'd known you were coming to arrest me I'd have killed myself first." "I have no reason to kill myself over this charge," he asserted. "An innocent man dues not kill himself. Ho fights." Society (Continued from page five) cnt plans.
