From a standpoint of nppear - ance, the Derby always held its own, to a certain extent, looking well, and apparently being a ne cessary adjunct for dress occasions Hut not until this season has the Icrby befiun to be worn in scuh large numbers. The "(jrnwn Der by" of comic paper fame also will demand attention, although not nearly as great as Its darker, bro ther. Snnp anil Curved Brims The felt hot of other years con tinues to be the leader, while shar Ing popularity with the Derby. Kelt hats In Fedora shape, and single Crease styles will be worn this year. The crowns are a trifle low er and noticeably smaller; while brims are either the snap variety orcurved. Both tho e: u.eu.usgG eilnea will be seen. In regard to colors, grays, tans and browns will predominate, with a sprinkling of the ever popular blue, as well. The variety of shades or"tones" of these colors will be amazingly great, featuring the pa stel shade. Hnt bands seem to have settled down Into conservative ways, as there wil; not be enough colorful bands to be seen to amount to anything. This Yrar's Straw Hats This year the straw hat will make Itself "felt" more sironjjly than ever, ro great is the variety frnm W,ich the particular man may make a selection. Light -wo:g;.t straw hats will, of course, bold first place, the conventional aallor easily hading n,o field Straw sailors will be decorated with gayly colored bands, while the straw itself will favor white, light brown and tan shades. The "oatmeal straw" hats will be the big novelty this year. This is a rough weave hat having an "ont-meal" nrpearnnce. and com ing In a variety of shapes, and several shades. The variety of brims on straw hats will not be great, as the size seems to be pretty much standar dized, being just nbout the same as last year, possibly a trifle nar rower. rjiiinmnft and Leghorns A certain percentage of men will favor the 'old reliable" Pan ama and Leghorn hats as most suitable to their toste. Panamas wil! be In the customary styles, fe dora, optimo and semi-telescope, in tho conventional Panama tones. Leghorn straws will bo in several color effects, ranging from white to light brown. The time honored cap will con tinue to hold Its popularity, al though there Is nothing startllngly new in cap styles. The one and uiKht-plcre models are "till good and visors are a trifle wider, leath er loud patterns may be expected this season all being especially suitable for sports and out -dour wear rather than for daily use. Latest for Men 1 J silk vest and knea breeches of glossy silk. Buokles Just below the knees, gray stockings to match ooat and patent leather pumps, completed the costume. Stages Style Shows For Farmers' Wives Durham, N. II., Mar, 21. Style shows for farmers' wives and classes in dressmaking and In Judg ing the suitability of clothing are the means used by Miss Daisy Donne Williamson of the Univer sity of New Hampshire to further a better understanding between country women and women of the cities. Miss Williamson has observed that many farm women feel Isolat ed and even slighted by those com ing from the cities because they re so sensitive nbout their lack of opportunity to ltarn what Is be ing worn In the larger centers. Miss Williamson is state demon stration leader of the university extension service. Puts Room In Cafe For Women Who Smoke Toledo, Ohio, Mar. 21. Thir teen men and one woman, all of them members of the board of di rectors of the National Restaurant association of Toledo, sat around a conference table. AH but the wo man were smoking cigars or cig arettes while they discussed the propriety of permitting women to smoke In restaurants or cafes. More have been sold in the last year in Great Britain than in any other year since the beginning of the great war, and the fashion shops are plugging so hard on the latest shapes that It Is pretty hard for gentlemen to get by with silk hats of ancient vintage.
