Gambling For High Stakes Practiced On Old River Boats The Willamette river at one time was the scene of numerous gambling games, according to 'Steamboat ' Smith, old time riv er man, now connected witb the Salem Navigation company as pi lot and purser for the steamer Northwestern on Its run between this city and Portland. 'Huge sums of money," he said, "changed hands as the Bteam era battled against the rapids of the river. "Many tales have been told." he continued, warming up to his subject, "about the palmy days on the Mississippi when fortunes were known to change hands on the turn of a single card, when slaves were placed In a row in lieu of cash to be won or lost on a game of cards. This pastime on smaller scale was fashionable at one time on Oregon rivers. 'In the early days on the Wil ¬ lamette the gambling habit be came contagious and while the early pioneers who traveled thru this section were not millionaires the card games operated nightly on the Willamette steamers were of sufficient size and limit to sat isfy the most hardened gambler. At one time during fhls per iod the captain of one of the riv er boats would take advantage of the darkness, fog, or any other ex cuse he could think of, to land his boat beside a convenient wood- yord there were woodyards all along the bank at that time and start up a stiff poker game re gardless of the fact that a major ity of the passengers would pre fer to go on, and that many of them were only a few miles from their destinations. Its owners had secretly come aboard at a village a few miles below and with them was a pilot who had not contracted the gamb ling habit to any great extent They simply took charge of the boat. The former master lost his Job I don't remember whether he lost anything in the game or not. "Fow fights developed at the games, no matter how stiff thoy got. I think this was due largely to the fact that everybody knew everybody else, for the moat part Occasionally there was a hand to hand argument, though, and a few times I have known of men just miesing getting killed by a hairs breadth.
