Ep pley grocery tore at 19th and State streets about 6 o'clock last night, pulled a gun on two olerhs, the bookkeeper and a woman cus tomer and got away with about $70 thfit he took from the cash roglster. He got away without at tracting the attention ot officers . and there la as yet no clue to his Identity. The robber hurried hU get-away after rifling the till and Is believed to have 'left the vicinity In an au tomobile that was parked on 19th street. Upon entering the store from State street the robber first en countered A. M. Reed, ono of the clerks. He forced Iteed to precede him to the cash roglater where he also leveled his gun at Wilbur Mo Cune, another clerk, and the book keeper, Miss Bernlce Mulvey. Mlas Mulvey was forced to open the cash register, ab she opened each draw er he appropriated the coins, but did not disturb the checks. The robber put the money Into a poc ket of his overcoat. According the witnesses the robber talked little during his op erations. A Mrs. King, a customer of the store, was near the door when he entered, and seeing the gun In his hand, put her hands up ward In the conventional manner. "Keep 'em down," the robber ordered, "and don't make no fuss In here." It" Is believed the robber pot the "lay" of the Job earlier In the afternoon when ho entered the store and bought a pack of cigar ettes, receiving his change at the cash register. Nine ty minutes before he was to die on the gallows for murder today Campbell McCarthy, 19 year old negro, was granted a stay of execu tion on defense attorns' conten tions that the boy had bscome In sane. The attorneys raced by Automo bile to the county Jail,, arriving as deputies were preparing McCarthy for the noose. Judge John P. McQoorty granted the stay at hla home early today. The petition for McCarthy was based on an affidavit by hla sweet heart who recently visited him In his cell. The negro youth was convicted last March of the slaying of Chris tian Qeltzen, night watchman dur ing an attempted holdup. KLAMATH SCHOOLS CLOSED Klamath Kalis, Or., Pec. 18.
