A. team, which played the Willamette university teum several games. "I us?d to play on my own team nalnst the university team," said Paige this afternoon, "and then when the Willamette team played against other schools I used to play on the Willamette team. I took music there." Paige 'was physical director ot the Salem Y. M. C. A. at the time he wns here, as well as being secretary. J. B. T. Tu thill was president of the Y. M. C. A. at that time. ORGANIZE ATHLETIC CLUB AT SILVERTON Silverton, Or., Dec. 10. (Spe cial.) A group of prominent Sil verton business and professional men began the organization of an athletic club Tuesday evening. George Hubbs waB elected presi dent with Clifford Rue as secretary-treasurer. Permanent organ ization with the drawing up of u constitution and bylaws will be effected next week. What, was formerly Vic'a hippo drome hna been converted into an athletic c:;ii house with a capac ity of 700. A new ring has been built and new mats, punching bags, Indian clubs and showers have been added. Arrangements are being made for indoor baseball and handball. Twenty men have each advanced $10 to finance the club in Its be ginning. This will be refunded as the programs begin to pay. GIVE DEMONSTRATION DINNER AT CHEMAWA Chemawu, Or., Dec. 10. The second of the series of demonstra tion dinners to be given by the sophomores in the "Wigwam," the senior domestic science depart ment, wns given this afternoon. Two girls of the class, Lylah Cro foot and Esther Gulney, are giv ing the dinner. Guests for the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Downie, Mrs. Brew er. Eleanor Houk, Edna Crofoot and Mrs. h. F. Urickell, principal of home economics. CHRiS.MAS PROGRAMS ' ARE BEING ARRANGED Woodburn, Or., Dec. 10. Two Christmas programs are being ar ranged by the Methodist church. The first will be staged the Sun day preceding Christmas and will be a pageant, the "Nativity." Wednesday night prior to Christ mas the Sunday school will have its Christmas tree and an elabor ate program Is being arranged. This will include several short playB, exercises and songs. Christmas will be generally ob served by the Woodburn churches and others are busy arranging their Individual programs. GARS CRASH; WOMAN HURT Dallas, Or., Dec. 10. Mrs. H. F. Gardner of Dallas was badly bruised and shocked in a collision at the corner of Mill and Jeftorsaii streets about 5 p. m., Wednesday, when Claytons grocery delivery-, with Dolton Stinnette driving, and a car driven by Robert Gardner collided. The accident happened just at dusk and it is probabh neither driver eaw the other uutil too lata to avoid the collision. Both care turned at right angle:; and ran for some distance before they wore stopped. Neither wuu traveling wiUi much speed, how ever. The Gardner car was bad I damaged. -LEGION AUXILIARY ELECTS 8llverton, Or., Dec.. 10. (Spe cial.) Of in terest to old time Silvertonlans was the notice in the Oregonian on the morning of December 9 -that 25 years ago that day Silverton was "menaced with destruction by fire when flames broke out. But for" the timely arrival of the Portland engine by special train, the busi nese section would have been wiped out." Oldtimcrs tell that thifi fire was on the corner of First and Main streets where the Direc tors store Is now located. ARM BROKEN IN AUTO CRASH Silverton, Or., Dec. 10. Joe Un hoff And Ludvig Moe collided on the Mt. Angcl-Silvertcn road Tuesday evening. Mr. Uphoff was going toward Mt. Angel while Mr. Moe was returning. Wit.h Mr. Mje was Sam Lorenzon. Both the cars were badly damaged and Mr. Up hoff suffered a broken arm.
