A controversy over title to
Grawy island in the Columbia riv
er has developed between the
state of Oregon and the federal
government as a result of an ap
plication of H. D. Evans of Port
land for a survey of the island,
evidently with a view to its pur
chase His application was filed
with the commissioner of the gen
eral land office In Washington
and yesterday Attorney, General
Van winkle filed in the same fed
eral department a protest on the
part of the state. Valuable flsh-

island. Van Winkles protest con
tends that the island belongs to
the state and not to the govern
ment.

After checking over the amount
of cash In the Willamette univer
sity vault at the lime of the rob
bery Thursday night, officials of

that there was exactly 9110.90 in
university funds taken. There was
some $30 in student body money
taken at the same time, and
checks, all belonging to the stu
dent body, amounting to a little
more than that sum.

ployed 25 months as yard captain.
He resigned, but returned after
the prison break last August and
became turnkey. He holds a com
mission as lieutenant in the re
serve corps of the army.
