A voucb wiled story ox a long bat tie bttwecn an ordinary bind of spider and a halt grown mouse tn which the spider won by tediously wrapping its strands around the mouBo'a tall and eventually lifting it tree ot the Iloor into its web, has been added to the long list of nature's parodies by the nature association. The story was based on a report made to it by Martin J. Arvin of Indiana, who said he first found the mouse caught in the spider's web behind a leg of his kitchen range. When he first saw It in the morning, the mouse was suspended with seevral strands around Its tail and was desperately scratch' lng the floor with its forefoot With futile attempts to draw the . mouse from the floor by throwing a web lariat around its neck, the spider took a position at the base or the mouse s tall when the skin was tender, and "evidently sunk its mandibles into the victim, which was noticed to flinch sev cral .times." Returning homo in the evening, Arvin said he found the mouse, then dead, lifted into the web a full Inch above the floor. Things remained undisturbed until the following morning when tne mouso had been raised one and throe-quarters inches. Beggs, who she says she married at Vancouver, Wash., in. 1903. In addition she charges cruel and Inhuman treatment, that her husband was Intoxicated much of the time they lived together; that he called her bad names and made life burdensome. She says there are but two minor children, the rest of the children having reached their majority. She asks for $100 In attorneys fees. Council Bluffs, Iowa, Dec. 8. (A.P) A disastrous fire , struck tho business section of the Coun cil Bluffs tarly today, causing property damage eat mated at more than $1,000,000 In loss to buildings and several hundred thusands of dollars In loss of Block t sires. The fire started In the basement f tho Continental Furniture com pany when a boiler exploded. J. McManlgal, night watchman at the building, was badly burned about the head and body before he escaped from the burning build ing. Eighty guests at the Grand hotel were safe but forced to flee in scant attire when the flames en veloped and later destroyed the ho tel. Their personal property was lost. Eight fire companies from Oma ha and Council Bluffs battled the flames and for a time It appeared as if the fire would spread through out the entire town district. Tho steamship Dewey has re paired damages to her engines and is proceeding to the aid of the West O'Rowa, messages Intercepted by the radio elation here early today reported. At noon yesterday the West O'Rowa reported her position as latitude 43 degrees, 2 minutes north, longitude 177 degrees, 11 minutes west. The weather is moderating and the ship was drifting south, messages indicated. The Dewey -reported she was bucking bead winds, but was mak ing six and a hale knots. GENERAL SLADEN TO COMMAND IN ISLANDS Washington, Dec. 3. (A. P.) Assignment waa announced today by Major General Fred W, Sladen, now superintendent at West Point to command the Philippine depart ment succeeding Major General James H.. King Alfonso has agreed to the aboli tion of the military directorate and its sucesston by a civil cabinet under Captain General Primo de Rivera.
