The fresh egg market cloned
generally steady with n cent de

Fresh eggs have ranged lower dur
ing the past week, extras closing
at 51 cents or 2 centa under last
week.
Standard cubes advanced a half
cent In the fresh butter market to
52 ccnlH. Other grades of cubes
held steady at former quotations.
Country dressed meats ruled
quiet with 16 cents the general top
on both choice veal and pork.
Saturday finds some of the largest
coinmbwtion firms with turkeys still
on hand. The market is nominal
end they will be disposed of today
at the best offer for the lot. Other
linefi of dressed poultry are mostly
cleaned up.

ing Graphic, is to be filed-today In
the supreme court of New York by

chamber of commerce.

series of article published by the
Uvcning Graphic in which it was
charged that the A Man tic city
beauty pageant conducted here
last September had been a frame-
up; that the jury had been packed
and tio girl had a chance to win
except one selected in advance by
certain motion picture interests.
The complaint sets forth that
tho Atlantic City chamber of com
merce feels that the business repu
tation of the refiort has been gross
ly libeled, and that the character
and honesty of the pageant direc
tors, all Atlantic City buslneet
men, has been impugned.

Reports received from the lead
ing eastern peppermint centers are
to the effect that enormous pep
permint plantings will be made
there for next year and it is es
timated ther will be over 20,000
acres in the east to compete with
the acreage here. Combining thm
with the vastly enhanced acreage
promised In western Oregon, pre
dictions are being made that next
year will see a big rlump in pep
permint prices, and indication
point to nn exact reversal of the
order this year when peppermint
oil went to $14.50 a pound, the
highest price In history for the
product.
Tho high price Is forcing In the
vastly Increased acreage In the eaM
as-well as here. One peppermint
handler alone in the middle west
lias 4000 acres of his own and he
also Is an extensive buyer here.
His own acreage far exceeds the
present acreage and probably Is
as much as the total acreage will
be here next year If all of the nho-
phesied planting goes In.
There la talk now of trying to
work out a contract plan for pep
permint acreage, considerably
along the line of hop contracts to
contract for the product of pepper
mint acreage over a period of years
at a stipulated price, while this
plan la meeting with some favor
here It is stated eastern buyer

erary. In all of these places It
was her cuetom to enter into and
aid in the community life as much
as possible and Mrs. Riggs says
she found opportunity to be of
real community service In helping
solve the problems that are en
countered in all parts of the coun
try at present. One of these prob
lems Is that of keeping families
together. Parents and children
appear not to desire the same
kinds ot entertainment, and tho
result is that the families do not
keep together. All Chautauqua'
programs, however, brought out
large audiences. Mrs. Riggs us
ually spends about 10 days In a
community.
In the lyceum division 'if the
work Mrs. Riggs will "make"
larger cities than those covored
by the winter festival circuit and
expects to reach some of the col
lego aud university points where
part of her work will be among
students.
Mrs. Riggs collected a list of
about 500 names and addresses
during her absence to whom Ore
gon literature will be sent.
